Jodie-are you coming up at all this summer to Kennebunk?
it is only 35-40 minutes from here.

Barb- my DH brought the cold home with him from work.
i think he ignored the 'no outside germs allowed' sign on the door.

I am still tweaked and freaked about the heads and tails and shell on that freakin' shrimp last night . Think I had nightmares.

I am now done reading book two of the twilight series. only took me a day. on to book three. [thanks Marcie]

As far as 'step by step' tanning...it's quite simple.

Go to a tanning salon and sign a jillion release papers.

Buy protective eyewear (should only be a couple bux) and a basic accelerator.

The staff should explain how the equipment works.

If you are rather pale, depending how easily you burn, and ASK THE STAFF how 'new' the bulbs are (if they are relatively new, they are stronger and you will need to take that under consideration/adjust your time), you only want to start out with about 4 or 5 minutes....if you don't burn that easily, start with 6-8. Try going every other day or so. See how you feel after that and then either keep that amount of time, or up it by 2 minutes. Once you can comfortably tan for 10 minutes, it's usually okay to increase in increments of 3 minutes...again, depending on your sensitivity. To get a base going, it's going to take a while...a good 3-4 weeks probably (if you are really pale to start).

After you achieve the color you want, you can go less frequently to maintain a tan...1-3 times a week.

You should apply your accelerator before you leave home and arrive at the tanning salon (kind of how you should apply sunblock 15 minutes before going outside...yeah, nobody applies the accelerator that way either.) This will give the product time to penetrate down into your skin (which, is what you want).

This lotion works WITH the UV rays in the tanning bed to help you get the most out of your tan session. Promotes moisture into the skin (very important) and a deeper, faster tan.... (You don't need the expensive lotions for a 'basic accelerator'....stick with something in the $15-$25 range.)

Also, you don't want to shower for at least 3 hours after tanning....the lotion in your skin is still magnifying the UV rays down into your skin...not good to wash that accelerator out/off....

Jodie, Alison, Janet and I can answer any questions here (they tan too!), you can find info online everywhere...and most importantly, the salon staff should be friendly, knowledgeable and there to help with any questions you have....(if you aren't quite sure about their recommendations, come home...we won't mislead you....)

You'll have to discuss their packages and what they offer....all salons are different with what they offer....choose what is best for you!

Good luck & keep us posted.....

Most any brand (professional) will do the job....now they have 'bronzers' in the accelerators too...they continue to darken the skin for hours after UV exposure.... :thumbsup2 (You can visit any manufacturer's website to learn about it.... just search "Austrialian Gold" or "California Tan" and you should be able to visit their homepage... ;) Most times they will tell you what the product is (tingle, bronzer, etc...)) BUT, some bronzers can be 'streaky'...so be careful to see what it does and wash your hands after application. I like Supre and Fiji...Fiji has a lotion that is for legs...not only does it help the legs, it also (is supposed...haven't tried yet) inhibits hair regrowth....so, no need to shave as soon/often :thumbsup2 (I have GOT to try THAT one....) Hey...I really don't mind getting lotions and mailing them to you guys ...why not? I can be one of those 'people' that some seem to have :lmao: It's all about money and profit....so, if I can help someone, I will...besides, it might cut down the shipping cost from the distributor! :thumbsup2

We picked up the Cheeky Brown with bronzer. I didn't realize until I read your post that it continues to "darken" the skin. . .in our case, redden the skin. An hour after tanning yesterday, neither of us felt "red", but later in the evening we both noticed more pinkness. Dh and I have fair skin . . . dh is blonde and I'm auburn (not really red) we both burn easily. Going for only 7 minutes in the mega beds cuz they don't have new bulbs. . .hope it stays that way for a while. I noticed this morning how soft my skin was and it has to be the tanning lotion. I really like it. I didn't notice any streakiness. . .what should I look for. . . and it's one of the less expensive brands. . Australian Gold. We don't go every day. . . every other day is enough. Neither of us get that deep, golden brown. . . DH's legs get pretty dark, but the rest of him usually looks more red. Me too. . . dumb pasty skin tone. . . no freckles though. 2 of our dd's get red and the youngest just bronzes nicely. . don't know where she got that. Anyway, I would appreciate the opportunity to buy lotion from you. . . will wait for word. Oh, yeah, I've got a question. . . does lotion ever "expire". I've got some from last year and the year before. Would like to use it up if it's still ok.

This is great info!

We've already chosen our salon, bought a package and some lotion (mentioned in a previous post). We've stared a little longer than you recommend, and did get just a tad pink. We have 6 weeks to get the "base" down, and honestly, I think that's all either of us are really interested in. Neither of us tan that lovely golden brown (also previously mentioned), so no sense in trying for that, but I like some color and it seems like I can't do anything but burn in the sun. Hoping this will give me some brown color. . if I stick with it and do it correctly. We both shower and shave before tanning. . . and that lotion that slows hair growth sounds goooood to me to. I wouldn't mind not shaving every day (hate stubble :snooty: )

The girls in our salon have been really helpful so far. They are very young, but one of them seems to always be there and did a fair job of explaining the lotions to me. . . not as thorough as you're explaination though. She's the one we laughed at when she tried to sell dh a $60 bottle of lotion for men. . . so he would have a manly scent. . . :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: I posted his comments.

One question. . . how do we know when to increase our time? Should we go 3-4 times, then increase a couple of minutes and see how that goes? We've got plenty of time to achieve our goal with this, so not in a big hurry or anything.

So think we are set, got good information, feel like I know what we are doing and what to expect now.

Nite to you too.....

Hey! You ain't goin' to bed with Alison .... are you???

somethin suspicious goin on around here... :scratchin

Well heck NO! I went to bed by myself last night and nobody would have wanted to go to bed with me anyway ('cept DH he says he would have still gone to bed with me.) I'm sick, remember.

DH and I had a date night last night. We went to Red Lobster for grilled fish, but the wait was waaay to long and we were very hungry. So, dh decides he wants to do some other things first (and no, that is not code) so we did some shopping for Easter. Got candy, Webkinz and some cool puzzle books from Barnes and Noble for the baskets. I wanted to add some hair toys (all girls with pretty long hair) and maybe a bit of jewelry. . . dh said "N. . . O. . "

So, now what do I add. I'm going to get a few "cool" candy items, but we don't want to fill the baskets with candy like we have in the past. New healthy lifestyle and all, ya know, so we aren't sure what to do. I think I might revisit the hair toys issue with dh. . .they aren't very expensive. . .and I understand the nix on the jewels. So, we thought about Nintendo DS games, but they are expensive when buying 3. I did pick up these beautiful little painted ceramic eggs because the girls like that kind of stuff. We can still get away with bubbles. . .they like that. . . and maybe some new sidewalk chalk. . .I think they still like that. What's everyone do??

So, after shopping a while, I am starving and getting grumpy, and tell dh we have to eat and I don't want to drive back across town to wait at Red Lobster. Ok. . so off we go to find food. . . what do you want, I asked. He says, anywhere is fine, as long as I can get fish. . . Ok, that's not so easy. TGI Friday's catches his attention, so into the parking lot we go and right back out when he saw the line waiting at the door. . .it's 7:30 on Sat. night and everywhere is going to be busy. Past a few more places we go, then pull into the Pasta House. Hhhhmmmm, not likely to get fish here, but I'm not saying a word cuz I'm starving and I know I can get an Alli compatible meal here since I've done it before. Inside we go and NO WAIT. . . yeah! So strawberry colada for me and dh orders a soda. No thanks to the appetizers and I spot my meal. They offer several low fat options so I'm happy. . . I have a grilled chicken dish with red sauce, capers, mushrooms and artichoke heart. . . don't remember what else was involved, but it is yummy. . . a little steamed broccoli on the side and we are set. Yes, I'll take the salad since the soup is cream of. . . and some fat free Italian dressing on the side (I've got their dressing in my fridge since they are so kind as to sell bottles). DH orders same salad and dressing and then goes with the grilled salmon. Got his fish by golly. . . and a little broccoli for him as well. Salad comes with some fresh, warm rolls and dressing on the side as requested. . . salad is very good with mixed greens, red onions, artichoke hearts and pimentos. . . bread smells wonderful, but I stay strong and push it to the side. Not long and entree' makes it's way to our table. Very good, and dh gets some bites of mine. He likes the dish I ordered but really, really wanted fish and didn't want to order chicken since we eat it at home like 5 nights a week. He offers a bite of his salmon, but since salmon is a fatty fish, I decline as I don't want to push the allowable fat grams to the limit. . .took Alli right before we started on the salads. I gave dh most of the artichoke out of my salad and off my entree since they are higher in fat as well. Dinner finished, drink finished and desert declined, dh pays the tab and off we go to Barnes and Noble.

Hello. . .there's a Starbucks in here. . . so dh goes off to magazines while I order a triple decaf venti non fat no whip cinnamon dolce latte only after serious debate with self over the cinnamon dolce or the new honey latte. Met up with dh and back to the kids section we went. 30 minutes later, we check out with previously stated cool puzzle books in hand and dh says he wants to head home to watch a movie (no, not code either). I remind him we need to fill the tank with gas and he says he will do it in the morning when he goes to wally world for new shoelaces foster dog has chewed up (3 pair so far) and a few other must have's. I said ok, great and homeward bound we go.

Oh, forgot to mention I had to ask dh to please turn his phone off, or at minimum down during dinner. His phone rings constantly and we can't have a meal without 4 phone calls. So last night, after the first call 2 minutes after we sat down, I "politely requested" he turn it off. He didn't like it, but he turned it down. . .then had to be a smart a$$ when dd11 called from home and goes "its a call from home. . sorry kids, mommy says I can't take any calls during dinner". . . so I started to work up a good glare and he answered. . . in the interest of a nice evening, I overlooked the rather jerky behavior without comment :)

Now we are home, but can't carry in any of the sacks because dd15 and dd11 are standing in the door. Lock up the car, carry in my starbucks and almost make it to set my things down before dd11 has my 'bucks in her hand. Yes, I know, I've created monsters. . .and I do take my kids to Starbucks for a treat now and then. . but wth, they are only kids once, right. So I end up with about 1/3 of my drink, which I enjoyed and my dd11 enjoyed the rest. I was pretty full anyway, otherwise, I would probably only let her have a couple drinks. I was hoping to digest enough room for another drink or two.. . still have some Captain. . .but didnt happen.

DH puts in a movie, which I did watch for about 45 minutes before dinner took it's toll and I feel asleep. So much for date night. . . .

The "pink" was probably your blood rising to the surface...stimulated circulation....OR the very beginning of being burnt. If you didn't burn your skin or feel burnt, you were probably okay. How your skin feels is usually a good indication if you're doing it right or not...

How long have you been doing 7 minutes? If you've been there the past 3-4 times and been "okay", time to up your time by 2 minutes. The mega beds are usually 'higher' pressure with less UVB rays (burning rays) and more UVA rays (because they penetrate further, overexposure can still burn you tho) and will usually work 2-3x faster than the 'regular' beds...you sound like you are on the right track...but ask if they recommend increasing your time....actually only YOU know if your body is able to handle a time increase...but, they should be keeping records of how many minutes you are in each time.

AG is a good line...been around for years...I've never heard of anyone streaking with their bronzing lotions...if your skin looked different colors of 'tan' and 'streaky', then it's not a good bronzer/lotion....I think you are okay. :thumbsup2 Your skin is softer because of the moisturizers....moisture is key in a good, healthy tan....you don't want to "dry out, flake away and wrinkle"

You really shouldn't go every day....too much on the skin too fast....need to give your skin 'time' in between (of course, I don't practice what i preach :headache: )...every other day is fine...be consistant and keep tabs on your timing.... You shouldn't stay at the 'same time' for more than 1-2 weeks.

Accelerator bought fresh each year is always recommended for maximum results...however, your product from last year should be okay (just maybe not AS strong)... The stuff from the year before...will probably work, but maybe at 50% capacity... Do this: mix the two old ones together...that should boost ya a little.... But again, buying fresh each year is recommended...and most people will use an entire bottle in one year (tanning time)...but, I can see how you wouldn't because you only go about 2 months.... I wouldn't say it ever "expires", but it definately loses its "punch" over time.... Will letcha all know when I've gotten my catalogs....

This is great info!

Some salons will always try to sell you the most expensive lotions...because SOME of them work on commission ;) (we don't...our boss is cheap!) Some guys prefer the 'man' scent, and more manufacturers are finally waking up to this and making those.... Any standard accelerator will work for a guy tho....(unless they are really puttin' some wicked stuff in the mens lines???)

I think I already answered your question regarding time increases  (got a little ahead of myself....)

Well heck NO! I went to bed by myself last night and nobody would have wanted to go to bed with me anyway ('cept DH he says he would have still gone to bed with me.) I'm sick, remember.

I wuz wonderin cuz you & Todd's lights went out at the same time :rolleyes1 ...an don't matter if you're sick sweetie...there is always someone wantin' to go to bed ;)

Penny, we hope to come up to Maine this summer, but alas, I am running out of vacation time between my birthday celebration, my folks' cruise, and HHN, and if I didn't take the whole week of Thanksgiving off ... my sorry butt would be stuck working. We are going to try, as long as I can scrounge up some comp time.

Ah, oh ... I'll take the NY Mets. gasp.

Hey, great tips, thanks!

BTW, here's another tip I learned: Keep your lotion at a steady temp. Don't leave it in your car, where the temp can fluctuate. That also affects potency.

Here is one for you tricia my mom and sister live in a little town about 80 miles from me and about 3 years ago they put in a chinese restaurant and I have see alot of wierd stuff on a buffet but frog legs no but sure enough they had them and brother in law goes nuts for them and I ask him when did frog legs become chinese food :lmao: :lmao:

I have never had a frog leg. I keep thinking about those poor frogs out there... trying to survive with no legs... ;) :rotfl:

Yep, first trip down was to bring them munchies. Next was to put laundry in the wash, and of course I had to put the clothes in the dryer later, right?! (No hanky panky in my house, unless I'm the one doing it!)

:lmao:

Does seem to be alot of deep frying going on down south...what's with the whole Calabash style (imo it's tasteless)...think it's mostly cornmeal & no seasonings?

I had never heard the term "Calabash style" until our trip to Myrtle Beach last year.

I love low country boils... with the shrimp and crawfish and corn and all that. The Calabash style fried fish was good (well, catfish... I don't eat any other kinds of fish...) and the seafood didn't seem any different to me. :confused3

Good morning all-
Hope everyone here is getting used to the time change. It is so early for that, but oh well, more sunlight in the afternoon, evening :)
Went to church last night, so you all are covered ;)
Went to bed early last night.

I must have missed some birthdays lately.
Happy belated birthdays to Coastermom, K-Fish's DF, and one of Mac's Ds, and any other birthdays I missed lately!!
:bday: :bday: :bday: :cake: :cake: :cake: :jumping1: party:

Update: My dad should be released from the hospital today. I will find out more later I hope. I may have to help him out at home tomorrow, I don't know yet.
Chrissy is doing better from her viral thing. My stomach doesn't hurt anymore either. Yeah!

Next weekend is going to be nuts!
Next Saturday, Matthew has his Pinewood Derby District racing for Cub Scouts. Next Sunday is the Blue and Gold Banquet for Cub Scouts. He is crossing over to Boy Scouts! Time just goes so fast! DH and I are on the Banquet committee as well as some other parents. We are in charge of
decorations.
Can't believe Easter is 2 weeks away too!! Too quickly coming!!:scared:

I hope our weather here in Chicago warms up soon. I'm really getting sick of the cold and snow :scared: Please, 60 or 70 degree weather! :worship:

Hope everyone has a good day!
