IGround Turkey, every day, 79 cents a pound. Every day, that's not a sale. Mind you, we rarely eat meat, but that is what i use, in place of ground beef, when the kids are craving some meat.

Ground turkey is $4.49 a pound here, the ground turkey breast is over $6. This is the prepackaged jenny-o, (and one other brand that I cant remember at the moment) ;) purchased at the "regular" grocery store (Safeway, Raley's)I just bought some at whole foods for like $6.99 a pound . . . .

maybe i need to move. . .

I worked for a major hotel chain and the cafeteria was opened for lunch & dinner. It was mainly the same food that the conferences were getting.

Breakfast was usually just cereals, bagels, croissants and juice.

if ground turkey is something you purchase all the time, if you have a bj's warehouse club (like sam's) in your area, check out their ground turkey prices. The bj's here is either $.88 or $1.88 /lb. (I know, big difference but I can't remember which price) all the time but still less than 1/2 price of what you normally pay.

Ground turkey is 2.59 lb here if i get it freshly ground at the butcher block but if i walk 5 ft over to the frozen turkeys i get louis rich ground turkey for .88lb and louis rich ground sauasage 1.18lb i stumbled across this section it's the same at the big markets to in the turkey section in rolls marked louis rich ground turkey.
if i want the ground turkey breast then i have to go over to the poultry butcher block for 2.59 lb. and found out there is no difference really in the fat content. the louis rich is more like ground beef and since dark meat has more flavor then ground turkey breast which is very blah.

I am buying pork tenderloin for $4.49 a lb. - not pork loin, so there's the difference.
Yes, there is, but I actually meant pork tenderloin myself. I get a whole pork tenderloin for less than $2/lb. It is on sale at that price from at least one grocery store about every 2 weeks or so. I also get milk for $2 or less per gallon so I do understand that prices will vary regionally.

My point was that I do, in fact, feed my family healthy, balanced meals for under $10 per day. We are a family of 5 with multiple food allergies so I don't buy any process, boxed foods as we are most likely allergic to at least one ingredient.

Making broad, sweeping statements that anyone who feeds their family for less than $10 per day must be starving their children is rude and ignorant. Maybe in your area $10 is too much of a stretch or maybe some just aren't aware of the choices and sale prices available.

In the produce section they sell for .59 a package (here in town.) smoothie mixes My kids love the strawberry one and i use yogurt (plain) and bananas and oj. I don't add the ice in the am. I make these in the am at school time so they will be full until lunch time. along with there regular breakfast. They say it helps my oldest says it gives him little more energy. There are really great energy smoothie recipes out there for kids I don't believe in protien shakes for kids that's just me. you can but i won't.

oops--I meant to add a smilie after the protein shake comment! I would not actually do that esp 'cause this kid has kidney issues and protein shakes are very hard on your kidneys.

For the spaghetti pie
16 oz of spaghetti noodles cooked
3 eggs
1/2 stick of butter or marg (optional but it does make it a lot richer. I left it out this time because I had run out and we missed it.)
16-24 oz of spaghetti sauce
8oz of shredded cheese
1 lb of hamburger, browned
1/2 large container of cottage cheese
Italian seasonings to taste

I leave the pasta not quite as cooked as I would for regular spaghetti. Let it cool some but doesn't have to be all the way. Mix in the eggs, butter and seasonings and stir it all around. Pour into a 9x13 baking pan and pour the sauce over it, then the hamburger and then the cottage cheese. I kind of fork it around a bit almost stirring but not quite. That makes the sauce go through the pasta better as well as gets some of the hamburger and cottage cheese mixed in. You could certainly mix it all together in a bowl and then pour the whole deal into the baking pan but we like a bit more sauce at the top. Then sprinkle the cheese on the top. Bake at 375 or up to 425 if you are in a hurry for about half an hour to 45 min. Check to make sure it looks rather solid to be sure the eggs are cooked. Let sit for at least 10 min after you remove it from the oven.

This makes a LOT of food. We always get at least two meals out of it and a couple of lunches for me or DH.

I have never shopped for food at the Dollar Store and after recent articles on the dangers- I would not.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/07/26/business/main3098551.shtml

Does anyone else stay away from the food items or anything that would be ingested (toothpaste, for example) at Dollar Stores?

I don't think this article is saying that brands you trust are faulty if purchased at a dollar store. I can get kelloggs cereal for $1 at dollar tree. It is the same product that I can buy at my local grocery store at 1/3 the price.

As for people getting free meals at work.. I just switched jobs, but my old job was at a restaurant. free food. Waitresses got meals for $2, cooks got food for free, I was a cook. I got two free meals a day when I worked there.. breakfast and lunch.

There have been cases lately of counterfeit items being found in the discount stores. The most public was the Colgate toothpaste. There have also been several cases where it was found the stores were altering the expiration dates of the products on the shelves.

I personally won't buy anything consumable from that type of store, although I do shop there for cleaning supplies, baggies, tin foil etc

anything like pancake mix or anything with baking powder that expires or very close to it i suggest don't buy it at that point it starts to form a mold that can actually be life threating if eaten. Pancake mixes bisquick mixes, if theses items are open in your home they are only good for 90 days open then the baking powder forms a mold. if you buy them on close outs really don't children and adults have died from this mold.

OH My! I was not aware of that at all! THANK YOU so much for posting that. I just discovered a box of Bisquick Light or Low Fat or something like that. I had purchased it awhile back (maybe a year or more) & stored it in a giant zip lock bag. I figured it was still good, it was only power stuff afterall. We have been using it to make pancakes lately. That stuff is going in the garbage the minute I get home! Thanks again! :flower3:

Actually, if properly sealed these items can remain safe for years. The mold issues arose from mixes being packaged in cardboard boxes alone. Today they are packaged in a plastic bag inside a box to prevent the problem.

Leavening agents do become stale though, so these items should be replaced/dumped at their expiration date.

I did want to add though that this thread is making me be more creative in my cooking and I am trying my best not to let my leftovers go to waste!
We need some crockpot meals though! I am going to invest in one this year.

I have 4 5qt crockpots because i use mine so often in the fall and winter. On wedesday nights i cook for 20 kids and 10 adults for church i make everything in the crockpots the crockpot lasagna is the biggest hit.

I wish I was willing to use a crockpot.

My dad was an insurance claims adjuster, and worked claims where houses burned down, fire caused by a crock pot.. so, I am not willing to leave one plugged in while I am not home. Perhaps I could do it on the weekend though, when I'm here... I'll have to give that some thought!

Ahhh, yes. Lets hear some crock pot meals. I thought about it this summer. Since I live in TX and its 101 degrees out, this method of cooking sounds like a good way not to heat up the house!
My mom didn't cook in one so I need recipes/ideas.

I have my concerns as well but I will be home 99% of the time. I just don't want to have to spend so much time in the kitchen once school starts. I will have too much to do.
