BEWARE! Theft at Saratoga Springs Resort

It might not have been an employee, but another guest.
Once before we had been in the room and another family used their key to
enter our room saying that they were assigned the room. Scared us big time!
We called the front desk and they said that they made a mistake and thought
we were checked out????? We have also walked into a room with luggage in
it and had to go back to the front desk and be reassigned a room.
(both at 2 different DVCs so mistakes can happen anywhere!)
So it may be castmembers, it maybe a guest entering the room by front desk error.
Either way, lock it up!

Wow, this has me concerned now. We will be there the end of the month and I was planning on bringing my laptop. I was not to worried about in the room because I usually do keep it locked up but now I have heard of another report of problems with bell services. On our last day we are not leaving until after 3:00pm so I had planned on having them hold our carry ons until we have to take ME back to MCO. I wonder if they have a safe at the front desk where I can have them hold my laptop seperately?

Since I have been hearing stories of theft and damage I am a little upset now. I don't like to travel with the thing but I have to do some work on Saturday (our planned resort day) and it is much easier on the computer than on the cell phone. Guess I will need to think about this some more.

There are 20,000 - 30,000 families staying at Disney resorts every single day. Granted not every one of them will report problems on the DIS, but a little perspective is still necessary.

I refuse to believe that there are multiple guest rooms which experience break-ins on a daily basis. If crime were that widespread on Disney property, there would certainly be more people here (and other places on the Internet) who have been impacted by it. I'm sure the Orlando Sentinel would also be sinking their claws into Disney by now.

People should consider themselves no more or less safe at WDW than anywhere else in the world. Use common sense. I'm sure there are many millions of guests who have left their valuables sitting on nightstands and tables without incident. But taking extra precautions to protect those valuables will further reduce the odds of theft. That's true whether you're staying at a Disney resort, a Mariott or a Motel 6.

Disney has over 60,000 people on its payroll and unfortunately they can't be 100% certain that there aren't people who have ulterior motives. And Disney is an obvious target for criminals looking to prey on tourists.

I don't believe WDW should be viewed as any less safe than other places in the world, or any less safe than it was 5, 10 or 20 years ago. But it would be a mistake to assume WDW is a utopian oasis free of crime.

sad case but op shoud have lockeu up items.
There was a spate of brake ins at QKW into peoples cars ect, they had checked out but loaded stuff in car for jurnney home.Gone for a final trip to parks came back, widows smashed and valubles gone.
If its not seen or its locked up less chance it will go

True thing about other guests. We checked into a one bedroom at SSR and my boys went through the door to the lock off studio section. The people in the studio had left their door unlocked so we could have walked in and out any old time we wanted.

DH had to go into their room and lock their connecting door and leave via their main enterance so they couldn't walk into our room.

So always make sure those connecting doors are locked if you are in a lock off room.

If this happens to you, please do not go into someone else's room to lock the door. Call housekeeping if it bothers you. (I thought these were "dual doors" and both of them had to be open before these people could come into your room. So the fact that their door was open would not be a security risk unless your's was too? Am I wrong?) However, if you were scene coming out of a room not yours then you would be considered the thief and if the people seeing you leaving were not "honest" you may discover they suddenly are missing hundreds of dollars etc.... And you WERE in thier room..... It's not going to be easy to prove you had only good intentions!

We always double check the doors when leaving, especially after the kids "shut" the door. Can not tell you how many times they did not close the door all the way! :scared1: I am amazed we have not lost anything yet!

IMO the Op is assuming a few things that may or may not be true. First that it was indeed a Disney employee, second if it was that Disney has enough proof to go after that employee, without being sued. It also is infered by the OP that this is exclusive to SSR, this could happen at any hotel, motel or 5 star resort in the world. Disney has no way of knowing if the claim is real, I'm not saying it's not just that claims are often exagerated and Disney has no way of knowing. $500.00 is not a bad settlement because as noted previously this is a standard deductable. Also IMO if Disney knew someone was stealing from guest they would fire them on the spot and give the information to local police, posts like this are not good publicity and any resort would do whatever it takes to prevent this from happening again.
One final thought, again just MO, hide your valubles if they won't fit in the safe, there are warnings and disclaimers on every contract about not opening doors and locking up valubles. If a PC is to be left out get a cable lock and secure it. Hope no one thinks i don't sympathize with OP, I do, I once lost some valuble fishing gear in Mrytle Beach to I believe house keeping, and recieved nothing, not even a we're sorry. I also learned my lesson the hard way. If anyone thinks quality saltwater reels and tackle don't compare with pc's just shop around.

Ok without being slambed by the mods.

Common sence sould always be used .

NEVER leave anything in a room that you do not want taken.

If you do leave things that are of value you are taking a huge risk.

Would you leave said laptop on your car trunk in your driveway.

If you would do this you deserve to have it ripped off:confused3

For those that use a cable lock on their laptop at DVC, where do you attach the cable? We usually use the laptop at the table, but I am not sure what is nearby that we could securely loop the cable thru.

Thanks. -- Suzanne

Good point. At the time we just didn't think about it. But yes there were dual doors and both were unlocked. We wondered if they were using parts of the room before anyone checked in. Honestly it was our first trip "home" so we were pretty clueless at the time :rotfl: to excited being in a one bedroom.

Tomandrobin-
You are right about the kids. Heck even hubby is guilty, assuming the door will automatically shut behind him. :rolleyes1

Sorry to hear that! We stayed at SSR in July. Housekeeping came in to reclean our room because our room was dirty. We left two purses and two laptops in visible site. Nothing was touched.

Wow I will never do that again!!! I will not even bring my laptop next time!! We will also put our purse in the safe....

Unless you know for certain.....We should not be blaming the housekeeping staff! The OP was guesing/assuming it was housecleaning. It could have been a left open door, a stolen key from staff, a mistaken card key to another guest who took advantage of a situation.

Or maybe a lightning bolt hit the door and it miraculously opened and a thief was there at the right place and the right time and took there possessions. You are fetching. But anything is possible I guess!

I think is wrong to blame housekeeping! YOU or no one else can say as a fact who stole the items. Its not fair to blame them with no proof. Remember the Duke case......don't jump to conclusions about what did or didn't happen.

In a 1 bedroom, I use the table next to the couch. There is a crossbar where you can attach it above and it cannot be slipped off.

I have to agree. It's a bit unfair to try and play armchair detective after reading a 100-word message board post.

But really whether the culprit was a Disney CM, fellow guest or professional thief is pretty much irrelevant. The fact is that crime DOES occur at WDW just like the rest of the world. Reasonable precautions should always be taken to protect valuables.

I do agree!!! However it is someone that has keys to the Kingdom!! Literally!

No I cannot! But are you prepared to leave your precious belonging now that you know it can be a potential problem. I would guess no.
