If you will be on the July 28 Mediterranean cruise and would like to participate in a different adventure when we arrive in Olbia.
This subterranean lake snorkeling adventure (suitable for the entire family ages 7 + regardless of swimming ability -- the buoyancy vests will keep you afloat.) It takes place in the beautiful Sardinian countryside of Oliena, one hour south of Olbia. It is being run by Aqua Diving Centers. They would arrange our transport from the port in the morning, (time TBD), then take us to their diving center in Puntaldia where we would pick up our equipment: mask, snorkel, helmet with light, buoyancy vests, neoprene boots, and cut-resistant gloves then head south on a leisurely drive. We would snorkel in the underground freshwater lake, have lunch, then back to the port well before our 6pm departure.
At this point I am taking names of those who might be interested. I can email you the web page translation and map of Sardinia highlighting our port and the travel route.
I am not a
travel agent. I speak several languages so I am able to coordinate great side trips on my own -- bypassing the expensive excursions. Many tour opportunities are available only in the native language. On the Disney Mexico cruise we contracted our own ATV, zipline, and horseback riding outings and saved a ton of money. We even saw fellow cruise passengers on the same outings, but we paid a lot less. I research the other Olbia outings and you could do them on your won for waaa ycheaper -- for example, one day boat excursions to the La Maddalena Archipelago start at 20 Euros = $USD27 per person, not the USD$159p/p that the cruise is charging!
Some other details:
-cave temperature 68-70 degrees
-freshwater lake temperature 57 degrees
-There are no railings in the cave -- it is a cave in its natural state. They will take only 10 people in at a time. You just need to have normal walking ability.
-required clothing - sneakers (tennis shoes) that you can get wet, hand towels, light, casual clothing
-Vehicle: school bus
-They have been doing this tour for 20 years and have never had an incident.
-Time frame: 30 mins. to dive center to pick up equipment; 1 hour drive to cave; 1 hour in the cave; 1 hour + for lunch; one hour drive back to dive shop to drop off equipment; 30 mins. back to Olbia port Price to be determined.

P.S. I had heard that a future trip (2009?) may include an Alaska itinerary? Any truth to that rumor??
