Official Birthday/Anniversary Cake thread

Well I can definitely see what Disney stands to lose with the free stuff. I mean, if everyone were to claim "birthday" while there they'd lose A LOT! There was a thread on this the other day.... ie, saying it's your birthday, although it was really 9 weeks ago and whether or not it was ok. The major response? Anytime is fine so long as YOU consider it a birthday trip. Geeze! And people honestly think if they consider doing this over and over Disney will continue to offer free cupcakes and other "special treatment" free of charge? Think about it.... every person visiting Disney on any given day could do that!

I would think that if your birthday/anniversary is in the same month, fine... but if your birthday was 6 months prior to the trip, although the trip may be your birthday gift, it's not your birthday/anniversary! Don't rob the system! Just be thankful to be there at all. We're talking about cakes here people... it won't kill anyone to not get a birthday cake 6 months after their birthday! This is why Disney is doing what they are doing.... and like an elementary school classroom... we now all suffer for it!

IMHO, this "cake" thread where we provide each other with info on custom cakes that can be ordered around WDW has nothing to do with folks celebrating their birthdays early or late. Its irrelevant to this thread, IMHO. The cakes discussed and shown in this thread are NOT free. They are pretty darn expensive, actually.

If the GF has made it more difficult to order custom cakes, its probably more that they don't think its worth the hassle then anything else, IMHO.

I just placed my birthday cake order for WCC. I asked about the Mickey Mouse cake and the person taking my order had to check, and YES they do it! I ordered the MM head cake with Vanilla cake and custard filling They quoted me $45.

I was originally offered the 10 inch round for $40 with no customization (pictures).

Wahoo, this will be a great birthday suprise!

In mentioning free, I was speaking of the free cupcakes which are provided by the Disney bakeries free of charge. But the point is as to why Disney is making these changes that alter what our selections are regarding cakes, because we're all trying to figure out what's going on. Which, IMHO is on topic.... so all can have the most current information regarding our choices. Disney has done this, and most of us just simply want to know why.

But being "back on topic" my family and I won't be able to order a cake for 16 people when we only have 5 adults/3 small children. I was looking forward to the Mickey gold-stamped cake for our anniversary and a Mickey topper on a white cake for DD. Sad to see Disney has made this change. Thanks to everyone who shared that info. I guess I can quit obsessing with Disney cakes now! :rotfl:

And I was only disagreeing with you. I doubt very much the supposed free cupcake abuse at restaurants is the reason why GF bakery has apparently changed their policies regarding the custom cakes. IMHO.

To get one of the "free" cupcakes, you need to be eating at a Disney restaurant. You can't go in a bakery, say it's your birthday and get a freebie.
So is it REALLY free when you're paying $20 for breakfast ? :)

I would like to know too why they stopped doing the custom cakes. What I don't get mostly is why they refuse to do it when people are more than willing to pay the price. When I ordered DM's cake from the boardwalk bakery, the lady on the phone wasn't outright rude but I could tell I was annoying her - actually I had the urge to hang up several times during that call.

Can you get a cake at pop century?

Can I order one at AKL and have it delivered to pop?
THANKS!

No. Cakes cannot be delivered. You can call Pop and see if they have any in their food court or you can pick one up at the Boardwalk bakery.

Disney8704 the zebra cake is not 50 dollars. It's more like 30 something if I recall right, but it sure was not 50 dollars when I spoke the the girl at AKL, and when I checked the room service menu as it's also listed on there. Honestly the mini wedding cake was not worth the hassle the bakery did not even have it ready at the time my husband told them we would be dining there, so he was a bit upset they ruined his surprise as he really wantd it to shock me, but honestly when we did finally get the cake which was NOT till the end of the day it was not all that good honestly. Had a crisco type icing, and was mostly filling that was bland. For 25 dollars no I wouldnt let him order me that one again sorry, was just not what I expected when I found out it was from GF. They still offer the zebra at AKL, but you will only have the choice of that set flavor.

To the poster about pop, no AKL does not deliver as they have no pastry chef, so they do not do custom cakes only one set flavor zebra cake which is vanilla flavor. When I spoke to the girl at AKL she steered me away from ordering it, and said the cookie platter would be better. She said in her words that cake is just a basic cake their reg chefs can do nothing special. I was a bit surprised when she said that.

About GF from what I was told it was the chefs who told them to STOP, and she stressed that pretty hard in her tone taking pick up orders, and such unless you're staying there, or dining in one of their venues. I offered to pay extra to get an 8 inch customized and that was even more than 2 of us needed, but was told no, and offered no help the and I am quoting the chefs words here the flavors you can choose are chocolate/chocolate, or vanilla/vanilla, I said is that the only flavors I can get I had read I could customize flavors and fillings, and his exact words were Nope that's your only choice. Like I said in previous posts it was our first time at WDW, and our honeymoon which I stressed to them, and got crappy service from their bakery, and not a friendly or helpfull attitude. All in all it left me upset, and they made me nervous even calling them, so I am not sure if I would go to the hassle again of dealing with them.

When we've been there Pop Century has had the generic cakes in the cooler at the food court. I'm not sure of the cost, but I'd think it's the same as getting them at a restaurant, $13 or $15 or whatever. We had one of those at Garden Grill before and actually thought it was pretty good.

So people can no longer order the 10 inch cake to be customized, from MK bakery or where ever, for a dinner or lunch if your party doesn't have 16 people?
They won't do that for a party of say 6 peple even though you are willing to pay the difference and would like the leftovers for the room?
Am I understanding this correctly? I hope not.........:confused3

No, I don't think you will have a problem getting the 10 inch. I think some are saying that they have discontinued the 8 inch and that the only choices are the mini cake (at GF), the 6 inch(generic) and the 10 inch (or larger) for customizing.

Just call and ask and see what they say and then please let us know what they say so we can have the latest info here on this thread. :goodvibes

No, you can still order the 10 inch cake which GF bakery said the cake alone atarts at 50-60 dollars, then 25 and up for the decorations. That's the only cake they allow to be customized. They still offer the 6inch, and 8 inch when I called, but was told they would NOT allow me to customize the 8 inch that I could only choose chocolate/chocolate filling, or vanilla/vanilla filling. If you wanted any of the other many fillings, or cake flavors you would HAVE to order the 10 inch cake. Now Grand floridian said they would box the cake up, but we would have to carry it around the park all day, or go all the way back to akl to drop it off, but would not hold it for us. I did not go with the 10 inch cause it's only 2 people, and it was for our honeymoon but a cake that feeds 16 people was just way to much. Gf will not deliver to anywhere else, but their dining venues, or their hotel rooms. You can't pick the cake up. Like I said in othr posts when I called to make a special custom cake order I had read through this thread, and it stated numerous tims here that 8 inch cakes could be customized, but I was told no they could not be. If you are willing to pay around 100 dollars for the 10 inch cake, and are dining at gf they will not have a problem doing it for you I don't think all though they are not very friendly or helpfull. MK bakery not sure about, but I did hear they do not do the 8 inch anymore, but can't confirm that cause I did not call them. Only GF, and our resort AKL for cake options.

Ok i really like the little cake! very cute just what i need! BUT my boyfriend will no do that for me, i do all the planning and what not even for my own birthday! ha so could you tell me how to go about getting one of those?! and do you know anything about the POR bakery?!

Anyone have any experience with ordered a cake via private dining for a Birthday Illuminations Cruise? I have the number, but I've got a bit to wait before I can call. Just wondering what's available. I'd like to do something a bit special. It's my son's 13th birthday and we're going to have a fun birthday cruise for him!

Are you sure about that? Because on page 1 of this thread and other people have posted on here that the AKL Zebra cake was $50. When did you see $30? Not that Im complaning. Hey if its $30 and not $50, works for me! The lower price, the better :thumbsup2

Disney8704 the zebra cake is not 50 dollars. Not knocking the original poster of this thread, but like I mentioned before it seems somethings need to be updated cause it looks as if disney has made many changes since the thread was started. I mentiond in many post I called ALK myself and spoke to the bakery people, and the private dining people. I was told by both and saw it on the room service menu it was NOT 50 dollars. Like I said things need to be updated a bit as AKL does not have a pastry chef, so they do nothing but the zebra cake, or cookie platter type things. Things their reg chefs can do. It was in the 30 something dollar range. I honestly thought it was a very reasonable price for it if you are not wanting to hassle with GF as they seem no longer wanting to do for outside guests, and have stopped doing custom 8 inch cakes.

I got the little mini wedding cake ordered by dh on our honeymoon. Honestly while it's cute in presentation was not worth the 25 dollars in taste. This is just my opinion, but there was really no cake in it and mainly all bland chocolate filling. Again this is only my opinion on it I wouldnt order it again. You can only get it at the Grand Floridian if you are staying there, or dining at one of their venues.

Hi, as a newbie I'm looking for some advice please :)
We'll be having our Anniversary dinner at Coral Reef and just wondered if anyone could tell me what our options are at having a cake with our meal?
Any advice appreciated :)

At the CR, I personally, would do the generic cake, and ask them if they can do the thing where a diver holds up a sign near your table :bitelip: (you'd have to call them to see how to arrange that, or maybe one of our fellow dissers can enlighten you::yes::
