Pirates of the Caribbean

On Sunday, February 2, over 2,000 Members hoisted the Disney
Vacation Club flag and took over the Disney Wonder(R) for a
magical four-day voyage, including a stop in Nassau and two days
at Castaway Cay. The Captain's Log from the S.S. Member Cruise
2003 reports that it was smooth sailing all the way, with plenty
of magic, lots of characters, and special guests.

The festivities began with a Sail Away Celebration featuring all
Members on deck, giving everyone an early opportunity to get to
know each other, make some new friends, and learn a new dance--the
"Member Mambo." Along the way, in addition to two fun days at
Castaway Cay, Members discovered treasure at sea with
commemorative pins and souvenirs, exclusive offers, photo
opportunities, and more.

Members were treated to several exclusive guest appearances, too.
These included a special Q&A with fellow Disney Vacation Club
Member Scotty Bowman, the most successful head coach in NHL
history, and two performances from Andrea McArdle, who originated
two Broadway roles--Belle in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" and
the title character in "Annie" (for which she received a Tony
Award(R) nomination). Tom Acomb, Manager, Design and Production
at Walt Disney Imagineering, who helped create the magic on the
Disney Wonder and the Disney Magic(R) cruise ships, took Members
on a tour of how it all became reality. Fans of Disney
collectibles were treated to presentations from two Walt Disney
Art Classics veterans, David Pacheco and Tim O'Day. And Jim
Korkis, the Disney historian behind this newsletter's "Korkis
Korner," shared Disney stories, classic moments, and a tribute to
Walt, featuring some rarely-seen video. As an additional treat,
several lucky Members won the opportunity to dine with our
special guests; always remember--it pays to attend a Member
Update!

The ship's second day at Castaway Cay was declared "Member Day,"
filled with the kind of magic and fun that only Members can make,
including a sand sculpture competition in which many Members
demonstrated their artistic talent by building the Disney
Vacation Club logo in the sand. Back on board, the magical voyage
came to an end with a Farewell Celebration, as Members toasted to
friends both old and new.

We had a wonderful time meeting all of you, and we hope to see
you real soon!

Straight from the source

In last month's Member Clubhouse, we shared details of the
landscaping plans for our new, proposed Disney Vacation Club
Resort, Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. Well, since cold
winter weather is still around for many of you, what better time
to focus on that pinnacle of summertime fun--the pool! For insight,
we again turned to Keith Borngirno of MSI, the planning and
design firm who's helping bring the look and feel of Upstate
New York to Central Florida.

Noting that the "heart and genesis for the idea of this resort
are the natural springs," Keith and his team have designed a pool
inspired by the springs found in the resort's New York namesake.
Visible from the upper terrace (near the existing lobby and
restaurant buildings) will be a springs-like feature that,
although not spilling directly into the pool, appears to be the
pool's water source. Keith adds that an "interactive pop-jet
fountain area and waterfall for kids" will also be nearby this
feature.

The main pool will be about 6,000 square feet in surface area and
accommodate 180 Guests. It's to be constructed on the site where
the former Villas at The Disney Institute had its amphitheatre;
the area's current 10-foot change in elevation will be preserved,
serving as a transition from the lobby/restaurant area to the
pool deck level. According to Keith, they'll use the "spring and
the rockwork to transition that grade as a functional element."

The pool has a zero-entry feature making it compliant with the
Americans with Disabilities Act. Keith said they're designing
some interesting water spout features on both sides of the pool
entrance, too. The main pool area also has two spas, one of which
is tucked up into a rockwork slope near an additional small,
unconnected waterfall. For the two quiet pools at the resort
(removed from the main pool area), Keith characterized these as
having a "more formal garden quality" with some cast stone water
features.

By now, you're probably saying, "Sure, everything sounds
wonderful--but what about the waterslide?" Well, get in line for
a real treat! Keith and his team have created a unique slide that
twists and turns several times as it "meanders through the
rockwork." Plans also call for a bridge to be constructed over
the slide's exit into the pool.

And just like you'll find trees and plants native to Upstate New
York at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa, the rockwork
mentioned earlier will also have similar "roots." As they did
when planning the landscape, Keith and his team conducted
research in the Empire State; this time, they photographed rock
formations in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. The colors,
shapes, and types of formations they found will serve as
inspiration for the rockwork by the pool and throughout the
resort.

According to Keith, construction on the pool area will most
likely begin late spring or early summer. Watch for more exciting
details about this magical new resort next month and in upcoming
issues of Vacation Magic.

Disney's Vero Beach Resort

As the weather starts to warm up, consider heading down where
Disney magic comes to life, where sand meets the sea. It's the
perfect time for a trip to Disney's Vero Beach Resort. In this
resort's natural setting, recreational delights await--from
beachside fun to water sports to golf and tennis at one of the
many local facilities nearby.

At Disney's Vero Beach Resort, you also have a unique opportunity
to learn about the different sea turtles that nest on the beach
and in the nearby Archie Carr Wildlife Refuge from March 1 to
October 31 (the official sea turtle season). For the second year,
we're offering a special sea turtle program on Monday evenings in
June and July. Hosted by a staff biologist from the Caribbean
Conservation Corporation (CCC), the program includes a
presentation and a field trip to the wildlife refuge to see a
nesting loggerhead sea turtle. Cost of the program is $20 and
includes an adopt-a-turtle packet with the name and photo of a
loggerhead sea turtle, an adoption certificate, a fact sheet,
and a one- year subscription to the CCC newsletter (one per
household). You're encouraged to make advance reservations by
calling the CCC at (800) 678-7853. Payment is due at the time of
reservation. Please note that the field trip is a late-night
experience, ending around midnight, with up to a two-mile walk on
the beach to see the loggerhead; please use your judgment in
bringing small children. While there's no guarantee that you'll
see a nesting turtle, the success rate has been about 90% in
previous years.

And mark your calendars for March 13 and 14. If you happen to be
at Disney's Vero Beach Resort on either of those days, you can
join in the festivities celebrating the 100th anniversary of
America's first national wildlife refuge. On March 13 at 1:00 pm
at the nearby Indian River Mall, Director Steven Williams of the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will unveil a national time capsule
with artifacts from hundreds of refuges across the country.
Included in the day's entertainment is a special appearance by
Theodore Roosevelt impersonator Jim Foote. On March 14 at 9:00 am,
visit Riverview Park in Sebastian, Florida, for a ceremony
honoring the entire National Wildlife Refuge System.
Commemorative events and an appearance by the Voices of Liberty
from the Walt Disney World(R) Resort are two of the day's planned
highlights. Please note that activities are subject to change.

See you real soon!

Gosh, if they had just waited one more day it could have been the March Newsletter!;)

Adding my thanks!

Dan, I've registered my e-mail and even sent an e-mail asking that the newsletter be sent to me. I got the answer "we haven't sent anything out in the last few months, but we have your address and will send you exciting news in the future." This was a few months ago and I still haven't received anything. Can't figure out what the problem is, but at least I can read it here!

Janis

I got my issue last night.

Hint: If you are on AOL, give DVC a different email address. I'm not positive this is a problem with AOL and DVC,but I know I have other emails that don't get delivered to me because AOL recognizes them as "mass emails" and therefore, they must be spam, lol. It's highly annoying!

Luckily, I still get emails on how to increase body parts on AOL! :)

You're lucky they're only e-mails! I'm not signed up for any Instant Message services, and I still get those offers through IM! I can't figure out how to shut it off. Diana

I'm on AOL and got my clubhouse last night.

Those e-mails are really annoying, I've reported so many of them to AOL, I don't think they can do anything. I even tried blocking e-mails from those domains, but it doesn't work.

I got a couple of strange IM's in the past month. They came through the internet because the block came up asking if I wanted to accept it. The first time I did accept and it was an invitation to some "adult" chatroom. I closed it right away. The next time I did not accept.

I received mine last night as well!!! :D
