So sad to read about Puerto Rico

My experience is shared, to shed light in that pension losses alone which will happen; "Business is as usual" it is not, when bankruptcies affect all areas of the lives of the residents, and the functions of their cities. With all due respect this is a whole country we are talking about. As I've said will contribute to their tourism but, choose not to stay on the island.

I really don't understand what you are saying. This bankruptcy has 0 affect on tourism. Yes, those who held bonds and pensions there are broke now. How will that affect you. The casinos stay open, the rum still flows and the food still tastes great.

Yep, sounds more like a political position.

This has been going on for a while. But don't worry, you won't be mugged by homeless people when you get off the ship or have closed businesses everywhere. Best thing you can do is support the local businesses there by going out to eat at one of the local restaurants or taking a tour with one of the tour guides when you get off the ship. We were just there about a month ago and it was business as usual.

This is fully that which we intend to do, as we have in the past. However, we were looking to stay for a week on land at the end of the cruise but, changed our minds. Fwiw, our visit in 2009 was spent with warnings of muggings, and to be mindful of our surroundings even back then.

You aren't making sense. You are willing to spend money, but only if you don't physically sleep there in a hotel? Why is some of your tourist money okay to spend there but not on a hotel?

You should be mindful of your surroundings wherever you are.

I hope she knows Puerto rick is not a country.

I hope she knows that Puerto Rico is a U.S. Commonwealth..as in, Puerto Ricans are American citizens.

OP...this financial crisis in PR has been going on for a long, LONG time. This recent development doesn't mean the island is going to dissolve into chaos and anarchy. I bet you would have a fantastic time if you booked a week there after your cruise. There really won't be any impact to tourists at all. The problems faced by the residents will only be made worse if people stop traveling there.

I've visited PR 3x since 2009 and have never even come close to have any sort of issue. On my last visit, I walked through Old San Juan (hardly any lights) at about 1am on a Saturday morning. Again, no issues.

Doing 4 days in PR before cruising next April. Still looking forward to it & plan to help the local economy as much as we can. :dancer::drinking1
If you want some really good local food (ie monfongo), try out cafe Puerto Rico. Local place with super friendly staff.

We were considering a cruise ending in P. R. But, learned of their bankruptcy. We may still go to support tourism as long as the ships are sailing there. We loved it there on our first cruise, and wanted to do a sea, and land. :(

The economy in my hometown is bad but imho you don't have to feel afraid to travel there . Disney cruises still sailing in San Juan and safety is their first priority. We have lots to offer and I was there a few weeks ago visiting relatives and we had a great time .
Please don't hesitate to visit.

Thank you

My mom is from Caguas!

Caguas is beautiful. The whole island is beautiful--I lived there for 3 years when I was in the Navy and they still had the base at Roosevelt Roads. DW and I are looking at going back for our 30th next year. Thinking about spending a couple of days on Vieques and the rest of the time visiting around the island. It would be nice if we could get back on base and see our old quarters, but I bet that's hard to do now.
