Hi there everyone,

My wife and I have never cruised before and we thought we would dip our toes in the water with a 3-night Bahamas cruise on the Enchantment of the Seas. We just booked for August. I would greatly appreciate it if any of you veteran cruisers out there could share any advice you may have (both for first time cruisers and also for the Enchantment of the Seas). Also, if this has already been covered somewhere, I apologize and appreciate any re-direction to the right place/thread.

Thanks in advance, I appreciate it!
Mike

I've been on DCL however I've not been on RCCL (going in February) however I would say do some research on things that interest you i.e. specialty restaurants or spa treatments or on the ports your visiting :) I'm assuming Coco Cay and Nassau?

A little knowledge goes a long way :) (I've been reading so much about RCCL Its ridiculous lol)

I thought it had just been refurbished (and it has I checked ;) so try some of the new activities on the ship I've heard the R - Bar is fantastic!

I would not call myself a veteran cruiser by any means but I have been on Royal Caribbean (January 2014 for 7 nights and loved it) and have a trip booked on the Enchantment in Nov. I assume your trip is to Nassau and Coco Cay? I have been to Nassau on Disney Dream and did the Atlantis trip-we had great weather and an even better time! Loved it. It was just us adults but the water park was great. I did our trip through Disney Port Adventures (RCCL has their Port Adventures as well) because I was with all new cruisers and wanted to make it simple and easy. Just get off the ship and into the line. It is a bit pricey. There is a bit of a discount on resortforaday.com but it depends on what you want to do and how many people. There's full access, beach day or the aquarium type day. There are many tour companies and trips for Nassau on RCCL that you can prebook. Nassau itself is a bit sketch for walking around (I am adventurous but won't do it) but some folks don't seem to mind that. As for Coco Cay---I am really looking forward to that! There is a blogger "Very Unofficial Travel Guides" that does a quick video review on Coco Cay. Google him or other videos. I have seen one video with some snorkelers and their GoPro camera. Barefoot Beach for the adults is the ticket. Looks truly awesome! Food on Coco Cay is a bbq and included. I have read alot of fantastic reviews of Enchantment (the ship was stretched about 9 years ago to add cabins and such and also had some remodeling in the past few years-I don't think it was major remodeling, more like a spruce up) and also some not so great. I thought the positive ones were more convincing. I have JS cabin 7666 booked-it's AFT and looks amazing with a huge balcony/loungers. I hear 7166 and 7666 are great cabins!!! There is a Youtube video of 7166. Lots of privacy. When you board, the Windjammer (big buffet-whatever it is called!) will be crowded-you will probably hear this. You can eat at the adult area instead or ask the stewards if any other food venues are open when you board. This is always the same on every cruise...but we have always found a seat and food at the big buffet until the room is ready. No other big secrets other than you pay for pop. If you are a pop drinker...you might want to get the pop plan. Otherwise it's iced tea, lemonade, water, coffee!! Individual drink prices are reasonable but there are plans for that too. Have a great trip! :wave2:

You will find that 3 nights are not near enough! Our first cruise, in '97, was 7 nights and THAT wasn't enough! Now, 18 cruises behind us and 3 booked in the next 14 months- including 14n PC, 7n New Years and 16n TAS- I wish I could cruise year round!
Sign up for Crown & Anchor and get a Future Cruise certificate- .Pay your deposit and you get OBC for next cruise.
Which cabin- type and location did you get? Make sure you're not right above or below casino and clubs unless noise doesn't bother you.
Get to port early for boarding; pack a bathing suit in your carry on and hit the hot tub , pool and grab a drink and lunch anywhere besides Windjammer Cafe which will be packed when you first get on board.
On a 3 day, don't do a spa treatment;not enough time!
Read your daily Cruise Compass and circle things you don't want to miss. Try the different bars and lounges- they all have different clientele and 'feel'. Decide which activities you want to participate in and do a plan for the day.
You can bring 2 bottles of wine per cabin on board and bottled water- a lot cheaper than what they charge on board.
Order 2 appetizers, deserts or whatever you want. There is no limit, so try whatever you like and don't feel bad- everyone does it.
Your walls may appear to be something else, but they are magnetic! Bring magnets to hang notes, compass, etc.
Bring Bonine should you think motion sickness would be a problem.
Bring some sort of exterior door decoration to make your cabin easier to find in a hallway where everything looks the same.
Bring some interior decorations as well to make your cabin more festive.
Check out Cruise Critic Boards to connect with others on your cruise.
Have fun and explore the ship right before or after dinner starting from the top down!

Awesome, thanks for the advice all! We're only doing a three night cruise because my wife isn't sure how she'll do on boats. If all goes well will definitely do a longer one.

I have to agree that a 3 night is a great way to test the waters and that you will find the cruise too short (if you find out you like cruising). Short cruises feel a little rushed because everyone is trying to do as much as possible in a short amount of time. I recommend you set an agenda of what you want to do on and off the ship before you leave. That way you won't be scrambling and rushing like everyone else. If you like cruising, you might get a great deal on a future cruise while on board (make time to talk to the on board representative). You can transfer the booking to your T/A and you can leave the dates open.

Look into buying the wristbands that help prevent seasickness. My daughter uses them and swears by them.

Hello, Ran across your thread and couldn't help but stop. My wife and I are going to do the exact same thing May 2015. We will be celebrating our 25th anniversary. She is really scared of how she will handle the ship and water though. I have been trying to talk her in to this forever seems like. Our plan is to do the 3 night Bahama cruise on the Enchantment and when we get back to Port Monday morning shoot over to Disney World through Sunday.

Now that your cruise is behind you, what can you share. What bits of info would be helpful to us first timers now that your seasoned pros now. lol

Right now we are not really thinking about any excursions. We just want to get our feet wet on the whole cruising thing and relax. If we like it then we would definetly book another longer cruise and then start looking into the excursions.

Enchantment is a gorgeous ship!!! I think it'll be perfect for your first cruise. It's not an overwhelming ship, and the crew was extremely friendly and intimate, at least that was our experience. The food was good and we had an awesome time! Does your wife get seasick?

Room n floor location is important, especially on a first cruise. Think " center" and " middle" to greatly avoid sickness... Bring Bonnie, as you chose hurricane season which may make it a bit tougher. Cruising is fun, try and get in as much as you can. You ll likely get hooked. Enjoy!

Sorry, Steelerfan - I have been meaning to respond and answer your question on how our cruise went, but just haven't had the chance.

Overall, it went well. I wouldn't say it was the greatest trip ever and sealed the deal on us becoming regular cruisers, but it did not go so horribly wrong that we will never step foot on a boat again. The main issue was that the weather was pretty crummy the whole time. It was light rain leaving Canaveral, and then there was a tropical storm out in the atlantic that was making the seas choppy all the way where we were. We were able to visit Nassau, but the private island stop was scrapped as the seas were too rough to tender. Very disappointing, but obviously the right call. The good thing is that my wife was able to figure out that she can develop sea legs and handle a little choppiness. I think next time we will stay away from booking during hurricane season as we do not want a repeat. I think rain and bad weather is perfectly fine for a Disney World trip, but it can completely mess up a cruise. In fact, we did a Disney World trip in August 2013 and a tropical storm came through Florida. It turned out great! People stayed away, everything stayed open and there were no lines. And it didn't even end up raining that much.

We did learn that, for my wife, mixing Dramamine, alcohol and being on the sea was not always a good idea, so take caution there. We heeded the advice and got a room that was in the middle of the ship and on the lowest deck, so that was a good idea. I was glad we had an oceanview room as I think not being able to see the water would have made the choppiness harder to handle. And the middle of the ship is good guidance for sure - one night we went to the show in the main theater, which is at the front of the ship and the water was very choppy that night - and we could definitely feel it even when sitting down.

We did a shore excursion to Atlantic in Nassau - the one where you get grounds access and can go to the beach. It was fine but again, it rained. So we had about a 45-minute window of sunshine (which turned out to be pretty much the only sunshine we had on the entire trip). But the excursion was otherwise fine. I would not have paid to do the waterpark there.

Everything else was great - food, entertainment, logistics. I think we realized that we may have more in common with the typical Disney Cruise clientele, versus the Royal Caribbean clientele. I think since this was a 3-day, Friday to Monday cruise, there are a lot of Florida residents who take a nice long weekend and get the drink package and just have a great time. But a little more of a 'booze cruise' vibe than I expected. Probably not typical of Royal Caribbean in general, but perhaps for these short sailings out of Canaveral and Miami. Either way, a good way to dip our toe in the waters, so to speak, but not sure we would take the kids on one of these. Maybe the longer Royal Caribbean cruises on the new ships, but probably not this one.

So the upshot is, my wife has agreed to another cruise. We are targeting a Disney Cruise in summer 2016 with the kids for 7 nights. Should be fun! Happy to answer any other questions anyone may have, as I left alot out.

P.S. One thing that we noticed was that it was inconvenient not having a way to communicate across the ship with each other. We are so used to being able to text each other on land. So if we were ever doing something separately, it was difficult to manage (it's a wonder people ever used to be able to get by without it!) Anyway, we are looking forward to the fact that Disney Cruises seem to have this solved.
