Height questions

It saddens me to hear that your son is hurting because of this. We put such importance on arbitrary physical attributes rather than what really determines what a man is. I hope your son can grow to realize that he can have the future he hopes for, regardless of his height.

This. My husband is 5'4". He is more capable and more of a man than many "men" I know. He also has red hair, these 2 traits combined probably made some aspects of his teen years less than a breeze. The whole seeing shorter men as less thing is so annoying and stupid, especially considering one does not control their height. I'm sorry your son is having a difficult time. It's definitely much, much harder for males than females.

I'm 5' and my DH is 6'1. To the surprise of all of us, our DS topped out at 5'1 and it has had a terrible impact on his self-image. He said to me once "No woman will ever want me because I'm short". It broke my heart.

That really is heartbreaking mama... I wish he knew his value, but I totally understand for a boy that height can be important to them. He will meet the right girl, but I'm sure you both want that to happen today. Hugs to you both.

My sister has been sending her 14 year old to a specialist since he was 8. They measured his bones every 6 months, and predicted he’d be over 6’ like his dad. At his most recent visit, they noticed his grown plates have shortened, and at best he’d top out at 5’8”. He’s been having some invasive testing and will most likely get hormone treatments.

Dd17 was rarely even on the charts for height, but I didn’t bother testing her, she’s a girl and we have very short people on both sides of the family. We were so surprised when she grew 4 inches and gained 20 pounds in 1 year. However, we totally failed on her scoliosis diagnosis at 16, 45 degrees both ways.

So just out of curiosity, did your nephew have an issue that he needed a specialist? And the height testing is just a side effect? I'm so sorry he needs invasive testing... I hope it's not painful. Poor kid!!

I'm 5'10"; Hubby is 6'0". Our 6 month son is 27 & 3/4 inches. ;)

I wish I was a tiny bit shorter but I've mostly gotten over that.

Ok Amber, I've guess I've been off the boards for a little bit. I thought it was a short time, but I think it was longer than I realized... you got married??????

It was kinda a whirlwind and I’ve never been happier OR more certain. I love my new little family! (He came with kids, can you believe it? And I adore them❤️)

I’m 5’1” and love my height. Never wanted to be tall. My legs are long for my height so I can’t wear petite sizes.
Dh and ds are 6’. Other ds is 5’10”

I am one of the taller females in the family so I never felt short!

There’s a guy who’s competed in several seasons of American Ninja Warrior and was a highly successful college gymnast who is 5’ tall. I wish I could think of his name but he’s talked quite openly about his struggle accepting his height and his struggles with it. Maybe watching some of his interviews might help? I believe he also had a stunning gf on at least one ANW season which might help too lol.

omg, congratulations!! I'm so happy for you :cheer2::banana::cool1:party::love: I tried to find old posts of yours so I can read about it (I'm guessing there's a thread or 2 about this?), but I can't see your profile (it says you limit who can see your full profile). Got a link?

I’m 5’5”. My husband is 5’2”. (Before h put such importance on arbitrary physical attributes rather than what really determines what a man is. I hope your son can grow to realize that he can have the future he hopes for, regardless of his height.]

No big thread or anything. I went pretty quiet on here when things fell in place because we couldn’t stop talking long enough...lol. He’s everything I wanted and didn’t think could all exist together, educated, handsome, sweet, but not too sweet, one of the smartest men I’ve met, gush, gush, gush. Small wedding with a judge that’s my dad’s best friend. He’s a polyglot and lived in Paris for years so our delayed honeymoon (due to his custody schedule, he has 50/50, so we decided to wait until bm used her summer time to go to Europe) will be Paris and probably Dublin; the last part we’re still discussing. So, that’s the run down. Sorry for the gushing, but if someone asks, I’ll gush. Being so in love; it’s hard to hold in.

Omg, When did I become this non pessimistic, super happy human?

6'6" here, Marie is 5'1/2". Big difference, but has worked out okay for past 47 years. I would have liked to have been maybe 6'4". A bit tough getting clothes and comfortable in cars. Marie says she would have liked to have been 5'2"-5'4". But so far, all is well for both of us. .

Jonathan Horton is a two-time Olympic medalist in Gymnastics and competes on ANW. He's 5'1". Tyler Yamauchi, also 5'1" is a former gymnast, World record holder for the Iron Cross, and also an ANW competitor.

Thank you it was Horton I was thinking of. I'm a little in love with him myself - I've always had a thing for gymnasts lol.

It's really too bad that one's height is still considered in the worth of a person in the day an age of supposed enlightenment. People actually brag about their children's height which I find strange. My kids height peeked at a late age but I alway remember the parents of tall kid boasting proudly that their kids were the tallest. I'm friends with a famous chef and his model/designer wife. The man is maybe 5"7 and his wife is almost 6 feet. She wears heels all the time and they make a striking couple, don't give a crap about the height difference and project confidence in spades.

I am 4'10" and my husband is slightly over 6ft. Our 3 kids are average height but the oldest is only 13 (the other are 12 ans 11)...so they may still grow a bit more. 2 boys and 1 girl and the youngest is on the shorter side but he embraces it, I have always loved being short, so I am pretty sure that's why he likes it, LOL! His best friend is a girl that is younger and MUCH taller than him and it doesn't bother him one bit, he thinks it's funny that she has to do all the reaching for stuff when they hang out! Hahaha!

It does seem like the last outpost of things you can be judgey about; which is kinda the most ridiculous thing to judge because you absolutely can’t change your height. Even my dh, who is decently tall at like 5’11.5 or something laughs about women who wouldn’t go out with him on tinder due to his height...and I have friends who will only date men over 6’ too. It’s weird. Is 6’ the line of value for a man?

He's 21 now and seemed to have stopped growing around 16, although we all held out hope he'd take a final spurt like his dad apparently did around 18. It didn't happen. It was quite startling to be confronted with just how deeply he struggles with body image. Honestly, I never anticipated a boy having feelings like that and of course he's perfect in my eyes. I'm not sure what we could have done for him during his teen years but I feel like we really dropped the ball somehow. :sad1:

I have a nephew who is 5'3" (at 28) who struggles with self-esteem issues and depression. His mom took him to an endocrinologist who suggested growth hormone treatment if he didn't begin growing more by 14. Unfortunately, at that visit, his growth plates had closed and it was too late. It's difficult because society places an emphasis on men being tall. Although I know it doesn't seem that way now, I'm sure your son will eventually find a nice girl who doesn't care about height.

 No doctor ever hit on this as a problem during DS's childhood and adolescence. He was a tiny kid from the get-go; rarely ever above the 10th percentile for height and weight but always perfectly healthy and energetic. I wasn't even aware there was anything that could, or should be done to stimulate his growth. I guess we all just assumed he'd sprout up at some point. I do know several men who are between 5' and 5'4", so it's not freakishly uncommon and of course they all lead normal, happy productive lives. But it's certainly not what they'd hope for probably and does contribute to feelings of inadequacy just like a girl might struggle with being small-chested, or big-footed or having bad skin or a myriad other superficial things that break their hearts. :sad1:

DH is just under 6 feet - 5 feet & 11 1/2" tall. He has 3 brothers. His 2 older brothers are just a shade shorter than he is, & his younger brother (the baby of the family) is the tallest & is probably 5-6 inches taller than DH. Their dad was probably about 5'10''.

My driver's licence says I'm 5'2" - I'm really probably about 5'1". I'd love to be about 2-3 inches taller.

My mom is average height for a woman. She's shrunk as she's gotten older, but I think she was about 5'5" or 5'6". My dad is probably what's considered short for a man - he's about 5'7" or 5'8", I think. And I take after him.

Clothes shopping is hard. I looked FOREVER for a dress for a recent wedding. There's just not as much selection in the petites - one department store (Belk) no longer even carries petite dresses! I shopped for days, both online & in stores. I finally ordered a dress that I knew would be too long, & my mom hemmed it for me. She's been hemming my clothes my whole life! LOL!

I have short legs as well & a small bone structure (I'm genuinely petite) - so I can't carry any extra weight at all w/o feeling like I look dumpy. I feel like people who are taller can hide a few extra pounds while I have no where to hide it! LOL! And, as I've gotten older, the harder it is to keep extra weight off!

My entire life, I've had to reach for things & climb on kitchen counters & use stools, so I'm used to it - but, every now & then, it gets frustrating... like, if I were just 2 inches taller, I could reach this!

And, this is just my personal opinion, taller, more statuesque women seem to have a more commanding presence & just naturally garner more attention & respect. (And I'm sure it varies.) I get "honey-ed" & "sweetie-ed" all the time. I also get "you look cute" a lot.

However, I do like being shorter than DH. I can wear really tall high heels & still be shorter than DH which is nice.

Both DD & older DS are taller than I am & shorter than DH. DD has stopped growing & is about 5'4". She's happy w/ her height for the most part, but would have liked to have been 1-2 inches taller. Older DS is probably still growing, & he's maybe between 5'6" and 5'8". Younger DS is still shorter than I, but I think he'll probably end up being taller than older DS.

Not sure about the respect part exactly; I know lots of women in various sizes that certainly hold their own in that department. But I'm with you all the way on "cute". Cute, or worse yet, "adorable" is how I'm always characterized. It's almost as if having a somewhat child-like stature makes it subliminally weird for people to see you as truly "hot". :scratchin

I'm 6'0" and reached that height at about 15. Growing up, I hated it: all the teasing, the comments, being a head taller than every guy.... I finally "grew into" it in my 30s,and now (at 43) it doesn't bother me too much. But complete strangers STILL comment on my height all the time, which is hurtful and annoying.

My husband is also 6'0" and occasionally I'll wear heels for a special occasion but I admit I still feel weird about towering over everyone (and him.)
