D3/D4/D5 - The Mighty 'Nucks - Update 06/23

My husband, Dave, and I both did the Grumpy 35.5, I mean the Dopey, in January. We took the gift card option for the half marathon, but we are also going for the Disneyland Avengers races. Dave, our daughter and I are doing the 5k and then he is doing the Infinity Gauntlet Challenge, but getting the Coast-to-Coast medal. Hope to see you there!

I can't believe I haven't posted an update on this trip report since April! Luckily, I do have the next few almost all ready to go since I write them up on my personal blog first, so this should start to move along a bit faster.

January 27, 2017 - Part Two

After being serenaded by some animatronic birds at the Tiki Room, we headed over to our lunch reservation at Cafe Orleans.

We had a 1pm reservation at Cafe Orleans, and the place was insanely busy when we got over there. We actually had to stand in a line just to check-in for our reservation, and there were a few people in the line who did not have a reservation, so they seemed to be pretty angry when they were informed they would not be able to get in that afternoon. Ugh, people just make a reservation! Even if you don't need it, it's so much less stressful knowing you have one.

We had a bit of a wait, so we went exploring a bit so we could find this door! Maybe one day we’ll actually get to enter the door…

IMG_4366-e1492439440648-225x300.jpg

That's the door leading to Club 33 in case anyone didn't know. Even the door is fancy for that place!

Anyways, it was almost 1:30 before we were led to our table, a 4-top right by the main pathway (a perfect location for people watching!). As always, we had looked at the menu online before our trip, so we had a pretty good idea of exactly what we wanted to order.

We both started with a mint julep , $3.49 (and since we were inside the Disneyland park, these were virgin due to it being a dry park (the only place to buy alcohol in that park is inside Club 33).

IMG_4367-e1492439464255-225x300.jpg

These were so good, and they were bottomless! I think I drank about 4 of them while we were there…

For my meal, I decided to skip an entree and just order two appetizers. First up was the Pommes Frites – traditional French Fried Potatoes tossed with Parmesan, Garlic, and Parsley served with Cajun Spice Remoulade, $7.

IMG_4368-e1492439478507-225x300.jpg

I tried that cajun remoulade dip it came with, but I wasn’t a fan at all. However, it was not required – these fries were amazing and had so much flavour without it. Shoestring fries are also my favourite. Yum!

My other choice was a strange one – I ordered their French Onion Soup – sauteed sweet-onion medley in a traditional broth with croutons and melted gruyere $10.

IMG_4369-e1492439498457-225x300.jpg

Why I ordered this is beyond me – I don’t even like onions. I’ve ate french onion soup in the past, but I mainly just sip the broth and eat the cheese off the top. It’s not something I have ever ordered at a restaurant though, and probably something I won’t order again. This was ok, but it was nothing compared to those fries!

Luke decided to order an actual entree, and went for the Chicken Muffuletta Sandwich – Cajun-spiced chicken breast, Black Forest ham, capicola, salami, provolone cheese, olive salad, and roasted red pepper mayonnaise on a sesame seed bun served with house-made seasoned chips. $21

IMG_4371.jpg

IMG_4370-e1492439518271-225x300.jpg

Luke liked this, but said it was really nothing special (especially for the price). I stole a few of his chips – they were good, but again, nothing special.

Once we finished eating, our waitress came over with a Mickey-shaped beignet for Luke’s birthday! There was a lit candle in a pile of whipped cream with Mickey sprinkles and everything!

IMG_4372-e1492439537274-225x300.jpg
IMG_4373-e1492439556271-225x300.jpg

We had planned on buying some beignets on this trip at some point, so it was even better when it was free haha. I know they are typically sold in 3’s, but honestly the one was enough for us to share. It was good, but I might only be saying that because of how much icing sugar was on it…

The total cost for our meal was $41.74 after a 15% discount thanks to my annual pass. We actually made a reservation and came back here a few days later – those mint juleps were calling our names! If you don't want to wait for me to post that review on here, you can jump over to my personal blog and read it here.

Once we finished up our lunch, we were in the window for our Indiana Jones Fastpass. I seriously love that ride so much, it’s so good! It's similar to Dinosaur at Animal Kingdom, but Indy wins hands down. The theming is just fantastic!

IMG_4381-e1495594492944-225x300.jpg

After our ride on Indy, the park was getting really crowded. We later found out that the weekend of this trip was the last weekend for a certain type of pass to be used (I believe it was some kind of cast member family/friends pass?), so the parks were CRAZY Friday-Saturday-Sunday. Just a heads up if you’re ever thinking of going the last weekend in January…

Since the park was so crowded, wait times for pretty much every ride had skyrocketed. We decided to just head to Main Street, which was decorated to celebrate the return of the Main Street Electrical Parade.

IMG_4383-e1495581719824-225x300.jpg

We ended up going into quite a few of the shops along Main Street, and I had to take a picture of these cute little ornaments! I think I might need them for my Christmas tree at some point in the future…

IMG_4382.jpg

We decided to check out Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln along Main Street, since it was something we had never taken the time to do before.

IMG_4387.jpg

I definitely don’t feel like we need to do that on every trip. It’s a good spot to have a little nap though! (It’s like the equivalent of the show at the American Adventure Pavilion at Epcot haha).

I keep hearing people talk about how good those Mint Juleps are. Who knew that a virgin drink could be so good? :)
Also, I love the birthday Mickey beignet! So adorable (and anything with that much sugar on top has to be good).

Oh, those mint juleps. Sooo amazing. We have a mint plant growing like crazy in our garden this year, I might need to try and recreate that drink here at home...

I don't know if I could eat more than half of that beignet, it was really good though!

January 27, 2017 - Part Three

After our American History lesson, we stopped to swap out our FuelRoad and then we decided to hop back over to DCA. Luke decided he could use a coffee, so we went to Starbucks where he waited in line FOR EVER. Seriously, I think every person in the park decided they all needed a coffee at 4:30 in the afternoon.

Once Luke had his coffee in hand, we checked the time and realized we could make the 5:30 showing of Frozen at the Hyperion Theater.

IMG_4388-e1495581741734-225x300.jpg

Our seats were almost at the very top/back of the theater, but not terrible considering we didn’t get in line until about 5:15. This show was really well done! It’s absolutely worth checking out! The show is about an hour long, and the costumes and set design are stunning! I’m so glad we took the time to go watch this.

By the time we got out of the theater, it was about 6:45 or so. We felt we had completed enough for our first day, so all I had left to do was meet Captain America (I was wearing my hoodie that day after all!). We headed over to where the Spiderman/Captain meet and greet was, but just as we were about to enter the line a cast member came over to let us know that Cap was about to leave for a break (she saw my hoodie, and immediately assumed that’s who I was there to meet). She did let us know the approximate time he would be returning, so we decided we’d kill some time.

We stopped by Award Wieners so Luke could grab a beer. According to my notes, it was a sour raspberry ale

IMG_4391-e1495581759506-225x300.jpg

We spent some time looking around in the shops in that area where we bought Star Wars couples shirts (which will make an appearance later in this trip), and at one point we sat down on a bench to people watch and let Luke drink his beer. We knew we still had three more full days to spend at the parks, and we had decided to take a much more laid back approach to this Disney trip, so this was actually nice.

After we had killed about 45 minutes, we headed back over to see if Cap was back from his break. He wasn’t, but the same cast member was still there so she told us it should be any minute, so we jumped in line. The line wasn’t bad at all, only a few families in front of us. Captain America came out when there was only two groups in front of us, so in barely no time at all we were getting these pictures:

IMG_4394-e1495581778283-225x300.jpg

It looks like my sneakers are supercharged haha! So if you were ever curious about the runDisney New Balances – they are really reflective! Captain America was a really fun meet, he kept commenting on my sweater. It’s hard to tell from this picture, but my dress had all of the Avengers on it, so he was really excited when he spotted himself on there as well.

Also meeting right beside Cap was Spiderman. For some reason, Spiderman had a Disneyland Photopass photographer with him, but Captain America did not.

Spiderman was pointing at himself on my dress

IMG_6100.jpg

IMG_6099.jpg

After meeting some Marvel SuperHeroes, we stopped to swap out our FuelRoad again and then we decided to head out of the parks for the night. We went off to Downtown Disney and stopped at Earl of Sandwich for a very late supper at Earl of Sandwich!

We had ate at Earl a few weeks earlier when we were in Orlando, and it was close to the top of Luke’s ‘must-eat’s’ while in Anaheim.

IMG_4396-e1495052570161-225x300.jpg

We didn’t switch it up much on this visit, and I ordered the exact same sandwich I’d had in Orlando – the Holiday Turkey: Turkey, cornbread stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayonnaise $6.99. Of course, I asked for it without cranberry – I’m just not a fan.

IMG_4395.jpg

This was just as good as the last one I’d ate earlier in the month! I’ll have a really hard time ordering anything different on future trips – the combination of turkey and stuffing is just perfect

IMG_4400-e1495052643383-225x300.jpg
IMG_4401.jpg

Luke also decided to order one of his favourites from our meal at Earl of Sandwich a few weeks earlier, and got the Hawaiian BBQ: Grilled chicken, ham, swiss, pineapple and BBQ sauce $6.99. He loved it once again!

IMG_4397-e1495052588101-225x300.jpg
IMG_4399-e1495052627757-225x300.jpg

For some reason, I also insisted on ordering one of their Pepperoni Pizzas: Tangy pizza sauce, Italian seasoning, mozzarella & pepperoni on our Artisan bread. $6.99.

IMG_4398-e1495052606797-225x300.jpg

This was ok, but from now on I’ll just stick to my beloved Holiday Turkey sandwich

We made both of our sandwiches into combos, which meant we each had a fountain drink and a bag of chips. The cost was an additional $2.99/each.

Our total bill came to $29.11. We did not use my annual pass – I can’t remember if we forgot about it, or if they just don’t accept it there. Either way, it’s a relatively cheap meal for something so great!

After our late meal, we walked over to the parking lot and caught an Uber back to our hotel.

Wow, your sneakers really are insanely reflective (Luke's too, but I think yours are better). That's kinda funny ... and good for wearing them in the dark.
I love your pictures with Cap and Spiderman!

I love that feeling when you go to a restaurant and there's something you enjoy so much that you just can't even consider ordering anything else. I know it's kinda boring ... but it's nice to know that there's something you'll always enjoy!

January 28, 2017 - Part One

This was our earliest day of this trip, we had to be out of our hotel room and calling an Uber by about 6:45. Obviously at that time of day, the security lines at the parks were not bad at all, and we were through fairly quickly. We had a bit of confusion trying to actually enter the park – we tried the first line we saw, but turns out that one was for Extra Magic Hours (for the guest staying at one of the three Disney-owned hotels). We needed the line for early morning dining reservations – which we found.

This meal was one of the must-do’s for me on this trip – breakfast at the Plaza Inn! Our reservation at the Plaza Inn at 7:10am (so early!).

IMG_4406.jpg

We checked in and paid for our meal ($32 each, minus the 15% we saved using my annual pass – so $58.62 after tax). We were led to a cute little table beside a window.

IMG_4407-e1496372009522-225x300.jpg

We were actually some of the first people in the restaurant that morning, it almost seemed like there were more characters around than people haha. Since the place was practically empty, some of the characters were sitting down at a table waiting for guests to arrive, and they waved us over, so Luke sat down and got this picture.

IMG_0941.jpg

As people started coming into the restaurant, a few of the characters started moving off to meet them. I still managed to get this picture though :)

IMG_0541.jpg

The food here for breakfast is a buffet, but it wasn’t self serve, the cast members serve you whatever you’d like. Since there was so much going on with the characters, I failed miserably at taking pictures of our food at this meal…

I did have half a slice of french toast and a Mickey waffle, and that little cup to the top right is syrup. I also had a made-to-order omelet which I forgot to take a picture of until I was half finished it. I definitely ate more than that, but I didn’t take pictures – I know I had some fruit at one point.

IMG_4432-e1496373211209-225x300.jpg

IMG_4433-e1496373237426-225x300.jpg

This is the only picture I have of Luke’s food. Isn’t it a wonderful shot? It looks like he had some eggs, some ham…and some other stuff?

IMG_4434-e1496373266673-225x300.jpg

When you check in and pay for your meal, you are given a button that says Plaza Inn. I love that they do this at Disneyland! These came home with us, and are currently living in the memory box I have for this trip.

IMG_4438-e1496373350419-225x300.jpg

And now – the main reason anyone goes to the Plaza Inn for breakfast – the characters! We’ve done quite a few character meals now, but this was unlike any other. Most character meals have 4-5 characters present – this one had 10! Yes, 10! And they were quite diverse… I can’t remember the exact order we saw them in, but we did see most of them more than once.

#1. Captain Hook

#3. Fairy Godmother – she was adorable! She noticed my engagement ring and got really excited when she found out we had only been engaged for a few weeks. When we told her we were getting married at Walt Disney World, she told us that we would have to come back and honeymoon with her.

#8. Dale – he was awesome! For some reason, he figured he should tie the strings on Luke’s hoody into a knot haha… he was so proud of his work!

We finished breakfast minutes after the park officially opened for the day, so we saw the mad rush of people entering. Once we left the restaurant, we turned into Tomorrowland. As we were passing Star Tours, the wait time was listed at 5 minutes – yum, yes please! So we walked on to that, I think it takes almost 5 minutes just to simply walk through the queue line to get to the loading zone for the ride anyways. It was awesome, as per usual.

IMG_4507-e1496811272221-225x300.jpg

From there, we headed towards our plan all along – grab fastpasses for Hyperspace Mountain! With Fastpasses in hand, we checked the wait times on the app and saw that the Matterhorn Bobsleds were listed as a 20 minute wait (one of the lowest we’d seen) – so we headed off in that direction. The wait was probably closer to 25 minutes by the time we got into line, but since there was no option for Fastpasses for that ride (at the time), we were fine with that and waited.

IMG_4486-e1496810900856-225x300.jpg

That is a rough ride! Fun, and the animatronic Yeti is pretty cool, but my poor back! Luke was fine on that ride, he was the perfect size for the seats so he didn’t move around too much, but since I’m smaller I was being tossed around a bit. Still worth it though!

IMG_4487-e1496810927618-225x300.jpg

We checked the app again, and Hyperspace Mountain had a 20 minute posted wait time! So, back over there to go through the standby line. The posted time was pretty much exact, and 20 minutes later we had this picture:

PhotoPass_Visiting_Disneyland_Park_396798635337.jpeg

I love Hyperspace Mountain so much! The Star Wars theme just works so well for that ride!

From there, we stopped to use the bathrooms before heading over to Buzz Lightyear to help in the fight against Zurg since the posted wait time was 10 minutes on the app. I believe it ended up being closer to 10 minutes, but still no complaints from us!

We were now finally close to our Fastpass window for Hyperspace Mountain, so back over there to use up our FP’s.

IMG_4492-e1496811009521-225x300.jpg

Yes, I am force-choking Luke in this one…

PhotoPass_Visiting_Disneyland_Park_396798718979.jpeg

We stopped to grab a Fastpass for Star Tours so we could ride that again, and then headed to the other side of the park – Big Thunder Mountain was listing a 20 minute wait. We arrived just in time, a huge line formed behind shortly after us but we were boarding the very back of the train about 20 minutes later.

We walked over to Splash Mountain, and again – a crazy short posted wait time! So, into another line! We ended up getting soaked on that one, and the storyline really doesn’t flow as well as the Splash Mountain in Florida. I also prefer the side-by-side logs in Florida as opposed to the single-file logs in California.

PhotoPass_Visiting_Disneyland_Park_396798718975.jpeg

By this point, we were in the window to grab another Fastpass, so we stopped by Haunted Mansion and picked up a pair for later. We actually couldn’t find the Fastpass kiosk at first, and we had to ask a cast member for directions – it’s kind of tucked out of the way.

If you were keeping track – it was now only a little after 11am, the park had only been open since 8am (so 3 hours), and we had already been on:
  • Hyperspace Mountain (x2)
  • Matterhorn Bobsleds
  • Star Tours
  • Buzz Lightyear
  • Big Thunder Mountain
  • Splash Mountain
That is what I call a successful morning! And, we still had 2 Fastpasses in hand! We were now in the window for our Star Tours Fastpass (seeing as we were able to get the Haunted Mansion fastpasses), so we headed once again across the park.

IMG_4506-e1496811239445-225x300.jpg

This is where our amazing timing ran out…as we approached Star Tours we saw a giant line of people snaking through Tomorrowland – and it was the Fastpass line for Star Tours! Apparently, two of the simulators for the ride were broken down, so it was only operating at half capacity. I hate waiting in line for rides, even more so when I have a Fastpass for it, but we decided to stick it out. It ended up being over 45 minutes before we boarded the ride!

IMG_4509.jpg

IMG_4510.jpg

I was a little bit cranky about it, but we’d already accomplished so much that morning, and the ride is one of my favourites so I quickly got over it.

By the time we got off Star Tours, we were over halfway through our Fastpass time for Haunted Mansion, so once again we crossed to the other side of Disneyland to use that Fastpass.

IMG_4511-e1496811499580-225x300.jpg

The park was now crowded, and it was a warm day. It was after 1pm by now, and we were starting to feel a little hungry again. We also realized we did not want to be in the giant crowds, and decided it was time to leave the park, so off we went to Downtown Disney.

I love the picture of Luke and all the characters! All of your character pictures are adorable ... so many characters!
Dale tying Luke's hoodie ... not surprised. Dale is such a troublemaker.

Wow, you guys got through a lot of rides that morning, even with the Star Tours technical difficulties. I'm super impressed!

We are now back from our November Disneyland trip (and of course I'm barely half-way through my report for our January trip :sad2:). Looks like I have some trip reporting to catch up on!!

January 28, 2017 - Part Three

As we were walking through Downtown Disney, we realized we were feeling a bit hungry, so we decided to go see if we could get in to the Rainforest Cafe. We knew we had a supper reservation later that day, so we knew we didn’t want a huge meal, just a little something to hold us over. We headed to Rainforest Cafe without a reservation, but the wait wasn’t terrible at all (it was around 2pm at this point – so an off-time for meals).

We waited about 10-15 minutes before our names were called, and we were told to head upstairs.

IMG_4512-e1495561870632-225x300.jpg

IMG_4513-e1495562827446-225x300.jpg

Once we reached the top of the stairs, we had to wait to be led to our table. Again, not a long wait.

We decided it was a perfect time to enjoy some drinks – I went for the Strawberry Mojito – Cruzan strawberry rum, strawberry puree and sweet and sour muddled with fresh mint and lime, topped with Sprite -served in a souvenir glass, $13.99. After we finished our meal, I just had to take my receipt downstairs to the gift shop where they gave me a brand new glass wrapped up securely in a box. I really like that the glass actually says “Downtown Disney Anaheim” on it to distinguish it from other Rainforest Cafe locations.

IMG_4520-e1495562866814-225x300.jpg

This drink was good! I’m a sucker for anything strawberry, and any drinks containing flavoured rum. This wasn’t the greatest mojito I’ve ever had, but it hit the spot!

Luke decided to go for the Citrus Mule – tito’s handmade vodka, patron citronge orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, fever-tree ginger beer, $12. I always love the mugs that mule drinks are served in!

IMG_4521-e1495562887676-225x300.jpg

Our table was close to the elephant section of the restaurant, which I quite enjoyed. Just so you know though – this place is loud! It’s a large restaurant to begin with, then you add all the animatronic animals squonking and squealing every once in awhile – yeah, it’s not the place to go for a romantic night out. It’s definitely cool though!

IMG_4522-e1495563004791-225x300.jpg

Since we knew we were only a few hours away from our supper reservation, we decided to just split the Awesome Appetizer Adventure – chimi-cha-chas, spinach and artichoke dip, cheese sticks, chicken strips, guacamole, $19.99.

IMG_4524-e1495563025761-225x300.jpg

I let Luke have the chimi-cha-chas – they looked good, but there were a few too many things in them that I don’t like, so I didn’t want to spend that much time picking out the yucky things (I can be a difficult eater…). I also don’t like guacamole, so that scoop was all for Luke as well. Everything else, we split. The chicken strips and cheese sticks were both good – Rainforest Cafe kitchen workers know how to cook things in oil until they float. The spinach dip was ok, I’ve had better – but we still finished this bowl of it off!

Luke decided to go for a second drink, and ordered a Coronarita – a frozen margarita topped with a bottle of Corona, $12.99.

IMG_4525-e1495563095982-225x300.jpg

My annual pass gave us 10% off our food, so $2 off our appetizer platter. Our total bill came to $61.39 – almost $40 of which was alcohol – oops!

After we left Rainforest, we still didn't feel like going back to the parks just yet. Instead, we headed into the Grand Californian Hotel, and found some comfy chairs in a hallway to sit in. We were right by some large windows, so there was lots of natural light streaming in, and people were coming and going, but somehow Luke fell asleep and napped for about an hour while sitting up haha. I spent the time people-watching and checking in on social media (since the parks do not have free Wi-fi, but the Grand did).

Once Luke woke up, we decided it was time to go back to the park, so we entered DCA through the Grand - so convenient! I understand why people love staying there!

We walked around a for a bit, before it was time for our World of Colour dining package at Wine Country Trattoria. Spoiler alert - this is not going to be a glowing review...

It’s been almost 10 months since this meal, and I’m finally attempting to write this review. I’ve been dreading it, trying to put it off for as long as possible. I hate negative reports, but I really don’t know if there are any positives from this meal…

We did the World of Colour Dining Package at Wine Country Trattoria back in 2015 on our first trip to Disneyland and it was great, so we were looking forward to getting back to try it again.

We checked in, and were led upstairs to an almost empty second floor. Apparently this is where all of the WOC dining package people were sitting (in 2015 we were in the regular restaurant).

We had the dining package menu placed in front of us:

IMG_4530-e1496182213527-225x300.jpg

First up was our drink orders. While we were downstairs waiting for our table, I was looking through the drink menu and saw that they had Fairytale Cuvee – the champagne that is included with an Escape Wedding Package through Disney Fairy Tale Weddings. We had already been discussing that as an option for our wedding (we had only been engaged for a few weeks at this point), so I decided I wanted to order a glass to try it. The waiter looked so confused, and told me he had to go ask for permission to serve me a glass of it (what? He had just told us we could order anything from the bar downstairs…) Eventually he came back with my tiny little $17 DOLLAR GLASS OF CHAMPAGNE! Ouch, I probably wouldn’t have ordered it if I had known it would be that expensive (can you tell I rarely drink at restaurants?). In all fairness, it was good, and I'm looking forward to having it again on our wedding day.

IMG_4532-e1508700877303-225x300.jpg

Luke kept it a little easier for our waiter, and just ordered a beer of some kind (according to our receipt, it’s an ‘Anaheim Hefewzn’ – whatever that means.). He described it as not bad, but not memorable.

IMG_4533-e1508700899207-225x300.jpg

Next up were our Appetizers – we could choose between soup or salad.

I went for the soup, which was a Minestrone that day. It was ok, nothing special. I’ve had better at Olive Garden. It was also a pretty small serving.

IMG_4534-e1508700916339-225x300.jpg

Luke went for the Starter Salad – arugula, fennel, red onion, spiced walnuts and goat cheese with a fig-balsamic dressing (the only thing I’d eat from that salad are the walnuts, and I’m not supposed to eat nuts due to my Crohn’s). This salad was similar to the one Luke had back in 2015, but it wasn’t as good as he remembered.

IMG_4535-e1508700993613-225x300.jpg

Then came the entrees. On our trip in 2015, I had ordered the steak option and sent it back twice to be cooked as I had ordered it (if I ask for well done, I don’t want it bleeding out on my plate). Once I finally did get it cooked as ordered, it was delicious.

I decided to go for the steak option again this time, and ordered the Ribeye Steak – served with creamy garlic stacked potatoes and roasted brussel sprouts with bacon and honey. I mentioned that I don’t like brussel sprouts, and the waiter let me know I could swap out for broccoli no problem.

IMG_4536-e1508701009956-225x300.jpg

The steak was fairly dry (I know, I ordered it well done – but a properly cooked well-done steak should not be dry!). There also wasn’t much flavour on it – shouldn’t they be putting at least salt and pepper or something on it while they cook? The broccoli was cold (but cooked), and the potatoes were just ok. They reminded me a bit of the scalloped potatoes I had at Olivia’s Cafe at Old Key West a few weeks earlier, but the Olivia’s ones were a million times better!

Luke ordered the Herb-Roasted Chicken Breast – served with broccolini, caramelized onions, red peppers and fettucine pasta with an alfredo sauce.

IMG_4537.jpg

The pasta was good, but the chicken was much better back in 2015. Luke says it seems like everything was pre-prepared, and pretty dry by the time it made it’s way to us – as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for awhile.

Also included in this dining package is a tray of desserts – Trattoria Tiramisu, European Macaroons, Caramel Chocolate Panna Cotta and Lemon Cream Puffs.

IMG_4539-e1508701043666-225x300.jpg

I’m not a fan of cream puffs (or lemon flavour), so Luke ate his and mine was left. I also don’t get the current obsession with macarons (or European macaroons as the menu called them…) – I ate one of these, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy them (I did buy a few from a cart in Downtown Disney a few days prior, and I regretted it – I just don’t love them!). Luke told me his list of best to worst form this dessert plate would be the macaron-cream puff-tiramisu-panna cotta. In comparison, my list would be panna cotta-macaron-tiramisu-cream puff.

Overall, the desserts were fine – but the rest of the meal had been so disappointing up to that point that we were just over it.

This meal cost $46 each, and we saved $13.80 with my annual pass. Our total bill was $111.20 – way too expensive for such a disappointing meal.

After our not-so-great meal, I wasn’t feeling great (it was a pretty early morning that day, and unlike Luke, I hadn’t taken a nap). It was also a bit cold, so we decided to go to the Animation Academy building in Hollywood Land. We just sat on a bench in there watching the video on the screens surrounding the room for awhile. We could see the line to meet Anna and Elsa, and as it got shorter we decided to jump into line and meet them. I do like that you can get both of them in a picture together in California, but I thought the pair we met in Florida were a little better (more in character, and more wiling to joke around with us).

IMG_7882.jpg

IMG_7883.jpg

We had never gone into the Sorcerer’s Workshop (located in the same building), so we headed there. It was kind of neat, but I find it weird how it just comes to a dead end, and then you need to back-track in order to get out.

IMG_4541-e1509836765702-225x300.jpg

IMG_4542-e1509836781240-225x300.jpg

IMG_4543-e1509836812144-225x300.jpg

We headed out of the Animation Building, and went to buy some matching Star Wars shirts I had seen earlier in the day (I finally convinced Luke to wear matching shirts with me, I was very excited haha). We made our purchase (and saved 15% with my annual pass!), then continued looking around in the shops. After a few minutes, Luke realized that his FitBit was missing, and couldn’t remember the last time he saw it :sad2:. We retraced our steps, and went back to ask the cast members in the stores we were just in, but no sign of it anywhere. We even walked out to Lost and Found to file an official report, but we have never heard back – it is lost forever (or someone found it, picked it up and got themselves a barely used FitBit Flex…). It ended up working out in the end – my company introduced an initiative where they subsidized the cost of purchasing a FitBit – so I was able to upgrade to a Charge for under $60 (regularly $200 at the time), and I gave Luke my FitBit flex which was only a month old.

Once we re-entered the park we still had some time before we needed to head over to watch World of Colour, so we headed into A Bug’s Life Land and went to watch it’s Tough to Be A Bug – and no, I still didn’t sit back in the seat for the poke in the back part haha. Of course we had to go on Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train afterwards to help him search for candy corn – it’s the simplest most little kid ride in the entire park, but we find a way to go on it every single trip.

We headed over to the Preferred Viewing area for WOC, but made a stop at the Little Mermaid ride when we saw that it was practically a walk-on

We had an amazing spot to watch World of Colour thanks to the dining package. The show itself was as fantastic as always. It’s a show I never take pictures of, I just put my phone/camera away and enjoy it to it’s fullest. Of course I did snap a few pics of the Mickey wheel before the show started though

IMG_4562-e1509837137402-300x300.jpg

After WOC was over, we headed out of the park, caught an Uber back to our hotel and called it a night.

Oh man, sorry to hear about your disappointing meal. I hate when restaurants pre-cook things instead of cooking it fresh ... definitely affects the taste.
At least you had a good World of Color spot to make up for it!

I've kind of abandoned this trip report, but I still want to finish it up, so let's keep going...

Janaury 29, 2017 - Part One

We were a little slow moving this morning, and slept in a bit. When we arrived at the park, we entered California Adventure first. The first thing we did was grab a Fastpass for Soarin’ for later that day.

We didn’t have a ton of time before our dining reservation, so we checked wait times and went to the Mickey Fun Wheel (stationary, of course- none of that moving car for me!). I used the zoom on my real camera (a Nikon) and got some pretty cool pictures of the mountains in the distance, and a fake mountain much closer (almost all of my pictures are just taken with my phone, which was an iPhone 6 at the time of this trip)

After our short stay in the park, we headed out and walked over to the Disneyland hotel for a reservation at Goofy’s Kitchen.

In the spirit of trying out new-to-us restaurants on this trip, we had made a reservation at Goofy’s Kitchen – a buffet meal with characters located at the Disneyland Hotel.

FE722A22-9BE6-4F6A-8F32-B0470EC1F8B4-e1516218696255-225x300.jpeg

We walked over to the hotel and checked in for our 11am reservation. By ten after eleven, we had already paid for our meal – which you do before even being seated – and were in line to meet Goofy. The cost per person is $36, but they automatically add 18% gratuity to your bill. I did get 15% off with my Annual Pass so our total bill came to $79.91. I’m used to the characters coming to your table during character meals, and for the most part they still do that here. But, you typically meet Chef Goofy before entering the restaurant, and then during your meal cast members come around and try to make you pay more money to get the picture they took of you with him. I’m not a fan of this at all – in my opinion I’ve already paid more than enough just to eat here, plus I had Photopass covered by my annual pass. Needless to say, we did not purchase the photo.

Anyways, we were led to our table – a two-top close to the main entrance, and immediately went to hit up the buffet. I took a crazy amount of pictures of this buffet, so enjoy:

I didn’t pile my first plate too high, and went for a slice of pepperoni pizza, some cucumbers with ranch dressing, a slice of ham, green beans/carrots, chicken nuggets, rice and chicken teriyaki.

B1C385C8-146B-4617-B105-5391198408DD-e1516918305346-300x300.jpeg

I also grabbed some orange jello – it’s something that is so simple, yet I never make at home, but I’m always a fan!

Luke’s first plate – eggs Benedict, pepperoni pizza, PB&J pizza, chicken nuggets, bacon, cucumbers, sliced deli turkey, a slice of cheese and chicken salad.

My second plate:

7EE4D44E-C60C-4EEE-9CB5-16E4E4247FD1-e1517035019109-225x300.jpeg

I actually went fairly healthy (not very common for me, really), and grabbed more cucumbers and green beans/carrots, some pasta, and then half a plate of fruit – grapes, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and raspberries.

Luke’s second plate:

60799611-C7ED-4CDB-BF3C-7F44CF87FB0C-e1517034984362-225x300.jpeg

A made-to-order omelet (he can’t remember for sure what he had, but it looks like ham, green peppers and onions), chicken teriyaki, green bean/carrot mix, a sausage and another eggs benedict.

Finally, we had the ridiculousness that was our desert plates… first up, Luke’s:

712F367F-81BB-4EAF-90BF-504A182A38A1-e1516220791926-225x300.jpeg

A mini creme brulee, a square (looks like a puffed wheat square) and some of the seasonal cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream.

Since my second plate of food was healthy, I guess that qualified me to go crazy on my dessert plate – this looks like the plate of a five year old…

BDC41979-4DF6-4FF5-93F9-610829DAF6BD-e1516220815947-225x300.jpeg

More orange jello, a cake pop covered in sprinkles, a piece of the root beer bundt cake, a dish of ice cream covered in sprinkles and some of the worms and dirt. Yup, I’m definitely an adult…

Oh, we also can’t forget that they brought over a cupcake for Luke’s birthday:

5F1324CE-72BD-42F3-A891-1CF252BCBE13-e1517075194712-225x300.jpeg

This was a rainbow chip cupcake with orange icing piled high, decorated with Mickey sprinkles and a little chocolate Goofy hat. Yes, we ate this too…

Also, not pictured is the bowl of mini M&M’s I had… can we say sugar high?!

Overall, the food was good – it was nothing spectacular, but it was exactly the consistency and quality I’ve come to expect from Disney buffets. I never leave hungry or unsatisfied, and usually enjoy my meals.

Of course, Goofy’s is most known for being a character meal! The characters were making their rounds, we saw some of them more than once.

Overall, we enjoyed our experience at Goofy’s Kitchen. I really do not agree with them trying to force you into buying your picture with Goofy, I think they need to re-evaluate that and have that included for anyone with an annual pass or who has paid for Photopass – I refused to pay them an extra $30 just for a picture when I had just paid $1500 for an annual pass a few days earlier (and $80 just to eat here). Why not just run things like they do at WDW?

One thing I really like about the character meals at Disneyland are the custom pins they have. You get one just by eating there – we have a good collection of these now!

We don’t feel the need to eat at Goofy’s Kitchen on every trip, but we will definitely be back at some point!

We were hanging around afterwards, checking out the Star Wars stuff when a cast member came over, commented on our tshirts and then handed us a card with a picture of Bobba Fett and let us know he had seen him hanging around back by the cantina.

We headed back there, where there was a cast member standing by a nondescript door. We just hung out for a bit, waiting for Bobba Fett to appear but after standing around for about 10 minutes we went over and asked the cast member what time he would be showing up. The cast member smiled at us and pushed a button we hadn’t noticed, and within a minute Bobba Fett had emerged. Apparently we had to ask about him.

It was really cool to meet a rare character like that!

I love your desert plate. It's awesome.
Also, I love all of your character pictures.

That Boba Fett meet is so cool! I love that they have a character that you can only meet if you know who to ask. That's such a fun little secret!

Also ... I miss California Screamin'.

Yay! So glad to see the updates. Goofy's kitchen looks pretty good. It was great that y'all got breakfast and lunch items!

I love Disneyland trip reports, I so want to go back. Experiences like you had with Boba Fett really distinguish Disneyland I feel like. Can't wait to read about the rest of the evening!

January 29, 2017 - Part Four

Our supper that evening was at Naples, which I really enjoyed.

We checked in a little early for this reservation, but didn’t have much of a wait before being led to our table. They brought crusty bread and an oil/vinegar over for us right away, along with our drinks of choice – glasses of water for both of us, a glass of root beer for me ($4.25) and a bottle of Shocktop beer for Luke ($8.50).

I hate balsamic vinegar, so I tried to eat this without mixing the two – I do like dipping my bread in the oil!

We decided to order an appetizer, and went for:

Panzerotti – fried pizza dough filled with fresh mozzarella, artisan ricotta and Parmesan, marinara sauce; three for $9, five for $13.00

We ordered 3, since we weren’t fully sure what we were getting haha. These were really awesome though! I would probably order 5 of them the next time we go! It was hot, deep fried goodness wrapped around melty cheese. Yum!

We decided to share a pizza, and kept it safe by ordering aPepperoni – mozzarella, tomato sauce $21/$35/$47.

This was the $21 size, and it was more than enough food for the two of us! I can’t even imagine the size of the $47 pizza… They were not cheap with the pepperoni, I just wish it was spread out a little better (my OCD kicked in, and I rearranged most of the pepperoni so it was more evenly distributed haha). This was a good pizza though, I do love Neapolitan style pizzerias!

Since we didn’t think that would be enough food, and we wanted the illusion of pretending to eat something healthy, we also ordered a Caesar Salad – romaine lettuce, Parmesan and olive oil croutons, classic dressing; $9/ $14.00.

This was the $9 size, which seemed a little pricey. It was good, nothing really special though.

With my annual pass, we saved 10% off our bill. The total for our bill came to $51.10 after the discount.

Overall, I enjoyed this meal and would not hesitate to return again! Plus, it’s located in Downtown Disney so it allows you to escape the crowds of the parks for a bit.

Enough time had passed by the time we re-entered the park that we were able to go grab another Fastpass, this time for Buzz Lightyear (and for a time frame that we were almost in already!).

We used the Star Tours fastpass we had grabbed earlier in the day, and by then we were already in our window for Buzz, where Luke beat me as per usual.

The sun had set by this point, so we went to check out the castle all lit up.

We decided to grab another Fastpass, this time for one of my favourites, Big Thunder Mountain

We still had some time to go before our next fastpass, so we went to Fantasyland to go on some of the classic rides – Snow White’s Scary Adventure, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

It was our first time going on Mr. Toad – that ride is ridiculous, one scene literally depicts Hell. We had just made it out of Hell when the ride broke, we could hear the people behind us laughing and yelling out that they were stuck in Hell.

Of course, I had to stop for a picture on the ride vehicle located outside the entrance. I also have no idea how to pose for pictures…

Another ride we had never been on at Disneyland was Alice in Wonderland, so that’s where we headed next. It was much better (and longer) than I was expecting- I thought it would be similar to the rides we had just come from, but apparently it has actually undergone a few refurbishments. It’s by no means what I would consider an E-ticket ride, it was just better than I thought it would be.

As we exited the ride, the Main Street Electrical Parade was going by. We had watched this parade on our first trip to WDW, and weren’t really overwhelmed by it, so we made no effort to see it on this trip.

We were finally in our window for Indiana Jones, so we walked across the park to go on that. It’s such a great ride, the attention to detail is spectacular.

Luke decided he could use a snack, and bought himself a Dole Whip float. He ate it while we walked over to Pirates of the Caribbean, and by the time we were getting ready to board our boat he had finished it.

Once we exited Pirates, we were in our window for our Big Thunder Fastpass. I love the California version of this ride so much! Sorry for not many pictures of the rides!

By the time we got off the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness, the park was getting close to closing time, so we headed out and caught an Uber back to our hotel.
