Coolers on the plane question...

When we went on our last trip in 1999, we packed a cooler of non-perishable goodies, wrapped it in duct tape, and checked it as luggage without any problem. Now, post-9/11, I am wondering if I will still be able to do that. Has anyone had any experience with this lately? We are flying Southwest.

You may want to check the policy with your airline. We last flew to WDW in Nov. Our carry on was stuffed with food, and we had some food items in our checked in baggage as well. Had no problems.

It shouldn't be a problem but you shouldn't tape it so that they can inspect it if they need to.

Check with your airport (which may mean going there ahead of time and scouting, getting anyone on the phone is often difficult), but most airports have someone from TSA near the main checkin desks for those people who want to insist on having their luggage inspected in their presence. Some airports require that all luggage be searched in the passengers' presence, it depends.

If you have TSA look at the bag before it is checked, they will hand it directly to the ticket agent; you may not touch it once they complete the search. The ticket agent would then be able to tape it up for you before it goes to the bag room. Most coolers do not have secure-enough lids to go through automated baggage machinery without some kind of tape on them.

It should go without saying that everything you put in the cooler should be in factory-sealed containers. Anything hand-wrapped will probably have the inspectors insisting on opening the wrapping. Generally, the issue with food is one of density; things like stacks of chocolate bars will appear opaque on the x-ray.

A freind of mine just did this same thing flying on SW, and didn't have any problems. She called SW ahead of time and asked them if it would be okay......they said they did not have anything stating that it wasn't and directed her to call the TSA. Called the TSA, not a problem as long as you don't put any dry ice or anything like that in it.

We've flown NW with a cooler since 911 and haven't had any problems. Usually they make you sign something like a damage waiver. Another thing we've done is put our stuff in the cooler, put the cooler in a box and taped it up....no problem!
