1st time to Southern California. Help Me Plan! Want to do all the touristy stuff!

We have a week, tickets to Universal and DL.

Don't know if we should just self-tour or book a tour like Starline.

What do you think?

My family and I always rent a car, carry a GPS and just go about the touring ourselves. We see more that way, and come and go as we please without being a slave to tour times.

Coming from Canada, we love the shopping in California. We've been to the Grove/Farmer's Market in L.A., South Coast Plaza in Santa Ana, Fashion Island in Newport Beach, Carlsbad Factory Stores in Carlsbad (north San Diego), and many others.
