Have you ever traveled with family but stayed at different resorts?

We are doing this in Aug! We are staying at Kidani, but my brother in law and family wanted to be able to walk to a park so are staying at Boardwalk. We have done this before with them and honestly it works out great. We have already coordinated a few days and fp's, along with a few dining reservations. It allows together time but then also enough time for each family to do their own thing.

Thanks so much for your input everyone. While it might be a disadvantage when it's time to use the pool, I really think we'll all be far happier booking in the range we can afford and meeting up in the parks. I think they'll be staying at CBR and we'll stay at one of the All Stars.

You're not staying in the same rooms, right? What does it matter if you are in the same resort or in seperate resorts? Arrange meeting times for the parks and go from there. I know from experiance that one group may be faster or slower than another based on little Joey can't find his shoes or little Mary just can't get moving. Nothing worse than standing around waiting for someone to get their act together. If you arrange to meet at the parks at a certain time, you can get there at your pace and not be standing around waiting for Joe to find his shoes. This worked for me and our kids with our grandkids when we went down together. Also, it will give you a break from each other which, unless you already live together and are used to each others eccentricities (hope I spelled that right) you will be glad for the break.

I'm sure it will work out. We're sort of in the same boat for the next trip, primarily because my sister's family will be at FT wilderness in her camper. For a moment I thought "what about the pool" and then realized through all my trips, I've been to a pool exactly once....and if we really want water play time, we'll go to one of the water parks (it's been on my husband's to do list since he was about 11 or 12)

We are doing that in Sept, hubby and I are staying at dolphin then GF, then Poly while my grown kids are staying at Art Of Animation. I think it will work nicely since we don't plan on doing the parks together every day

how old is the youngest in the party of 5? if he or she is under 3? if so, they're eligible to stay at POP

No... but I think this will be my new life plan!
Kidding, of course!

While I haven't done it, I've read several times that you can get "day guest" passes for guests of yours to come swim in your pool if you talk to the front desk. So if you do want some combined pool time, you should be able to meet at one of your resorts and one family could "host" the other.

You must be prepared to be told that you cannot have your guests use the pool. I have had luck but that was in January and it was cool.

True! I definitely wouldn't count on it being guaranteed, as I'm sure it depends on pool occupancy, etc. If shared pool time was important to them, I'd book at the same resort. If not, they could give this a try with the knowledge that it could be granted.

We once did and it was a tad problematic as the kids wanted to hang with their cousins but I didn't feel they were quite old enough to come and go on their own or figure out transport especially when it was late and some transport had shut down. If your kids are little, like toddler or elementary aged or older teen aged, then it won't be as big an issue. But if they are tween to low teen aged....then maybe. For example, one night DS went back to SSR with his cousin from a park we were all at. They wanted to go to hot tub. Then he needed to come back to OKW so I took bus from park to SSR to get him and we walked to DS to find boats had stopped and the marketplace side was closed so we had to walk way over to pleasure island side and wait forever for a bus.

We've done it both ways as well. One trip was 4 families all in the same resort, same building and floor. The kids could all hang out together, swim, etc. We decided before the trip what days, events, meals we were going to do together and then the rest of the time each family could determine their own schedule. The down side was on the days we were together, it was tough to get everyone out the door at the same time. My family likes to hit the parks early and we were waiting on everyone else, usually. Would I do it again...yes!

Last year, 2 families in different resorts. We were at the Poly and My Daughter, Son-in law and granddaughter were at SSR. This worked out as well. We met up at the parks and for meals but no one felt like they had to wait for anyone else.

This year, 3 families. We will be at the Poly and the other two families at SSR. We've determined what parks, FP+, and meals will be together and each family will go their own way if they want to outside of that. My kids are all young adults as are their cousins that are going so even they can do their own thing if they so choose. I'm sure we'll have a great time even though we're in different resorts.

Either way, do what's best for your family and don't stress...have fun and enjoy your trip!

I prefer to be at the same resort when traveling with friends and family, it's so much nicer that way.

The front desk doesn't approve extra swimmers. Only the life guards can do that. Plus there are no day guest passes.

I am going next weekend and we are a party of 12. 9 people are doing a split stay at animal kingdom and old key west with a vacation club room. Myself and two others are staying at Art of Animation in a Mermaid room. We have all our fast passes and just about every table we had to pick together so like you said the only thing different will be pool time so it’s not a big deal to us. I couldn’t justify spending a lot more money on a room. Enjoy your trip
