Life After Marathons: A Running/barre3/Coffee/Life Journal

Pint glass acquired. On my way home.
I'm not a terrible person, right? They had one reserved for me whether I went or not, and if I was in the mood (or knew someone I could drag with me), I might have stayed.

I'll be back at road runners tomorrow for packet pickup for the nutella run. Which is not necessarily my next race.
But more on that next week.

EDIT: I'm already getting terrible person points today because I saw my coworker waiting for the train and purposely walked to the other end of the platform to avoid her. (I'm really not in a people mood today ... I took the train with her yesterday and it was nice to have someone to talk to, but today talking to people was a big fat no, so I avoided her). So it's entirely possible that I'm a terrible person.
It doesn't mean you're terrible. It means you know your limits. Glad you got the pint glass!

This was originally supposed to be a post about running spending, but then I realize that it was way too much personal information on the internet, so here's the abbreviated version:

1 - I spend too much money on running things. I need to stop. I especially need to stop the impulse purchases.
2 - If I behave, I get whatever Garmin I want. But that means no more random impulse purchases.
3 - The InB Easter Egg I bought last week, while cute, isn't very "me", so I'm trying to find out if I can return it

The End

Definitely not a terrible person for avoiding a coworker. Some times you just don't want to have to go through the effort of making conversation. I get it.

I've heard that the more you start running the more stuff you start buying. I imagine it's hard to stop yourself once you make it a habit, but you gave yourself a goal to work towards and that's the key. Just think of that new Garmin when you go to purchase something on a whim.

Love the pint glass you got!

Yeah. I just feel a little bad because she's super nice and friendly and I dont have that many friends at work. Oh well.

Yeah, as the mileage increases the spending definitely increases. You might start experiencing that soon.
But I'm hoping that remembering that I'm saving up for the Garmin will help keep me away from the impulse spending.

Love the pint glass you got!

Thanks!

Side note: I was planning on going to nyrr before work to pick up my stuff for the Italy run. That's not happening. Because somehow it's perfectly acceptable for public transportation in a major metropolitan city that relies on public transit to just randomly stop working.
Yeah, train problems again. On my normal commute, stopping at nyrr adds about 10 minutes to my commute. I'm on an Express bus that will be running down the east side, so nyrr would add closer to 30-45 minutes.
Sigh. I guess I'll go after work. There goes my super low bib number...

There is a latte in my very near future. Because grr.

Which egg did you buy? If you can't return it (and you may as well ask, worst they can say is no), you may be able to sell it.

I got the gold egg - INKnBrew singlet. Which I though was perfect for someone who is both an InB enthusiast and a beer enthusiast... I forgot that I am neither. I emailed them last night, we'll see what they say. I'm not really comfortable with the idea of selling it through a Facebook group or something like that (just me being weird), so if I cant return it, I'll have to figure something out.

Fair enough! I hope they do the return for you, I just looked at the webpage for that egg and it doesn't say anything about no returns, so it seems like you should be good. Just so you know, they only have one person handling the customer service/returns (why???) so it may take awhile for her to get back to you...like at least a week. It's a little frustrating.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll probably be able to return it, but I wasnt sure if maybe I missed something somewhere. I'll find out in a week or so when they email me back :)

I'm supposed to be doing a local 5k on Sunday, but it looks like rain. Sigh.
I'll make a decision Saturday night.

Also ... Beth likes the white/silver vivoactive3. Technically the rose gold is out of the running (some bad pre-bed snacking last night), but if I'm good before purchase time I might still get it.
Beth said rose gold/black would be the best, and I agree. If only.

Also ... Dopey fomo is very real right now. Probably only because it's not an option, but still ... sigh.

(Late to this conversation....) I had to look up the vivoactive colors, and I do love the rose gold, but I think you'll like whatever color you pick. I wonder if those ever go on sale? Some stores will have memorial day sales this weekend- just a thought!

I think you're right about the colors - I love the rose gold, but I'd be happy with anything.
I've been trying to monitor memorial day sales and haven't seen anything, but I'm looking. Right now the lowest price I see is $242.99 for the white/silver from Macy's, which seems to be a long-term sale price (at least I've been seeing it for a few weeks).
I think what I've decided (for now at least) is that if I see a good memorial day sale that includes the rose gold (not sure if it will be excluded because its brand new), I'll get that. If not, I'll hold off until the first week of June and get whatever is cheapest (probably the white/silver from macys).

Unless they release a black/rose gold, in which case ...

YIJE L'Chaim 5K Run/Walk: Plans
(I can't really call it race plans because this is more of a community event than a race)

Remember the 5k I mentioned yesterday with the rain? Ran is still in the forecast, but as I told the woman at the registration desk, I decided "who cares, it's just rain."

Date & Location:
Sunday, May 27th, My Stomping Grounds

Getting My Stuff:
I registered and picked up my stuff at the same time - yay! Pickup was at my synagogue, so it was super easy - my mom drove me (I didn't want to walk at 11pm) and we were in and out pretty quickly.
Bib number is 187.

Getting To The Race:
I'm scheduled for 3 miles + 5K tomorrow. The race starts at 9:20ish, with "opening ceremonies" at 9. Not sure yet what I'm gonna do - right now I'm thinking go out for my 3 miles around 8:15ish, then come home, get my bib and refill my water bottle, and walk over to catch the end of opening ceremonies (it's about a 10 minute walk). If I don't get out until 8:30ish, I might just run 2.5 before coming home, then run the 0.5ish to the start line, and then the 5K. We'll see. I'm also planning on trying a new nutrition strategy tomorrow, so a number of factors could potentially come into play.
(Plus, I may have an extra pair of shoes waiting for me downstairs so that I can change if my shoes get too wet in the rain ... so I don't know how long I'll need at home.)

Outfit:
Ugh. Rain.
Currently plan is for Guava Lava to make their race debut, because now that my old 880s are over 400, Guava Lava are my new distance shoes (I can still do distance in the old 880s, so I might change my mind in the morning, especially because tomorrow isn't really super long distance, but we'll see). I actually think some of the other participants in this "race" will like Guava Lava because they're so aggressively bright and we're a fun community sometimes.

I'm still contemplating the rest of my outfit. I really like the race shirt, but it's cotton, so if I'm gonna wear it, I have to wear something underneath. But the design is super cute: (the design is actually what pushed me to register despite the rain)
LRM_EXPORT_20180526_232448.jpg

I may leave the race shirt at home, go out for my first few miles in something, then come home and throw the race shirt on on top of that. Or I may wear two layers, and then swap the original top one for the race shirt. Or I may just not wear the race shirt. Because A) nothing new on race day (although really, this isn't much of a race), and B) who wants to wear cotton in the rain?
I should probably decide, since it's almost bed time (and I always lay out my running clothing before bed) ...

Race Plan & Goals:

The goal is to actually run this one at my Easy/LR intervals, which should give me a finish time somewhere in the low 40s, I think. We'll see if I can stick to that or if I get annoyed at the rain and want to go faster to get home.

Post-Race:
There's a post-race festival and concert. I'll probably go, maybe grab some free ice cream, and then head back home. We may be going to either a baseball game or fleet week tomorrow, depending on the rain situation. Welcome to summer ... when I'm always busy.

Track Me:
No live tracking for this one, as far as I know. But I'll try to remember to come back and post my time after I finish (I should get a text shortly after I cross the finish line).

Ugh ... rain.
I'm supposed to be heading out for my pre-race 3 miles, but it sounds heavy out there. Sigh.

Also ... just looked at the map from last year and it looks like there will be some running on wet grass (unless they've taken down the construction fences since my run on Thursday). So ... maybe I'm better off with the old shoes.
Sigh.

I Got A Trophy (or: Good Karma Gets Good Results): L'Chaim 5K Recap

Remember last night when I was all like, "oh, I'm gonna run, then I'm gonna grab my bib and go to the race" ... yeah, no. Stupid rain. I couldn't get myself outside and I couldn't muster up the energy to go on the treadmill. My dad ended up driving me to the opening ceremonies, and I don't know if I'm even going to get in my additional planned 3 miles today. We shall see.

Anyway ... the race.

Pre-Race:
I got there for the end of the opening ceremonies. I talked to another runner (not someone I know personally, but someone who I do occasionally see out running), a little bit about skirts and a little bit about runDisney (she, like me, is sad that most of the 10Ks are on Saturday ... she wants to do Princess Weekend with her girls, but she won't do Saturday races and the race they want is the 10K).
I eventually went into the opening ceremonies area to take a picture of the band:

That's A Shur Thing, a local religious band that they get every year. I'm 99% sure it's a father and his sons. Decent music.

Anyway ... once the opening ceremony was over, we walked over to the start area. Because there's no fancy start line, just a painted line on the street, people were unsure where to start, but got it figured out eventually.

The Race:
I posted this picture while waiting to start:

That doesn't even do the rain justice. It was a little very wet.

The plan for this race was to take it easy. I think I started a drop fast, but settled in. At one point in time a woman came up and started talking to me, and we kept talking, alternating running and walking depending on how she was feeling. I told her about doing set intervals and using my watch, but I couldn't really hear my watch so well because of the rain.

About halfway through the race, when we hit a downhill, I started to try to use my intervals, and my new friend came with. We ended up run/walking the race together. This was her first 5K (and she had just started running consistently over the last few weeks), and she kept up with me really well. I kept trying to encourage her and tell her how well she was doing, and she was very grateful that I was helping her out.

As we were getting close to the finish line, I looked at my watch and told her we'd be coming in below 45 minutes - not bad at all for a first 5K! We ended up finishing in ~ 42:11.

Overall Stats:
Gun Time: 42:10.92 (13:34/mi)
Garmin Time: 42:06 (for 3.06 miles)
Overall Place: 88 of 127
Gender Place: 28 of 51
Age Group (F 30-34) Place: 1 of 3

Thoughts:
As some of you know, I'm very religious. I wasn't originally planning to run this race if it rained, but I saw the shirt and really liked it, so I decided to do it despite the bad weather. And I can't help but think that there was a greater plan involved here, and G-d put me in the right place to help my new friend make it through her first race. And I think that because I was in the right place and took up my mission, I was rewarded with an AG win.
I know that the logical answer is that not that many people ran this race, and that's how I ended up being the fastest person in my age group despite finishing slower than planned. But when you do good things, good things happen to you, and I think that my fancy trophy was a reward for me helping someone else. It was kinda my Des Linden moment (complete with crappy weather) - helping someone else helped me reach my goal.

Post-Race:
I stuck around for a banana, some ice cream, and just to chill. They presented the awards, and I grabbed this thing:
upload_2018-5-27_14-41-18.png

Once I got my trophy, I went home. I thought about doing my remaining 3 miles then, because the rain had let up a bit, but I was wet and cold and needed to get into some dry clothes, so that was a no.

What's Next:
Italy Run next Sunday! I already have my stuff for that race, so expect a pre-race update soonish (like within the next 2-3 days).
