For those interested in bank bonuses:

DoC just shared that you can now open the Chase $500 checking + savings offer online: https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/7z1rcm/chase_300_checking_200_savings_bonus_online/

Unfortunately for those not near a Chase branch this won't work. AND that's the only reason I was excited to see it online, it's not terribly hard to go in and open this in branch if you live near one haha. I will comment that if you're traveling to an area with Chase branches you can open in person even if you don't live nearby. I did this on a business trip to Cleveland last year (live in Pittsburgh). If you aren't into bank account bonuses yet - might be worth checking out. It's a pretty nice way to earn some additional cash!

It does seem intriguing, if I'm understanding this right to get both bonuses ($500) I need 15k held for 90 days in the savings and then after that only $1300 of that held hostage for another 3 months (at least 6 months total) to avoid fees. If so we might be able to swing that, but my hang up is probably going to be direct deposit. We really don't have anything that counts as a DD from his list so we'd need an actual DD which is a PITA for my company, I think hubby's is easier but that means I need buy in from him to open it  Need my ducks in an row for that so it sounds simple and legal (he's still not 100% behind churning/travel hacking... :confused3... not even gonna get into it...)

OT sorta: I looked at the Chase map of locations... not a single one in PA? Totally weird, they're falling all over themselves in NJ and a good showing in OH but giant blank hole in PA. Being in the Philly area not too bad, there's drivable locations but makes it less desirable than opening it online sitting in my PJ's :)

It sounds like user error.
Agreed. There appears to be an issue with FedLoan (someone else had a payment that is taking longer than normal to post but as I re-read it they are really just sounding impatient- it was a holiday weekend for goodness sakes) and the other person who said their CIP coded as CA on a payment with no warning (plastiq reimbursed the fee, they had screenshots showing there was no CA warning) has now stated that they had paid the same recipient just one day prior... Looks clear for now!

@wendow idk how to tell, good q! Anyone help us out with how to tell is something codes as a CA?

Coming to an area near you! https://www.doctorofcredit.com/chas...investment-including-expanded-branch-network/
(In like 5 years though.)

Can you clarify the "quite the opposite" lol - I said a lot of things there, haha.

My situation is that im 1 person player. I dont have a lot of income since im a college student still, so my organic spendings is quite low. I however, MS a lot more than most of ya'll do. the bigger the bonus, the more points i can get in one heep because chances are, i probably wont earn any more than that. If it wasnt for knowing MS, i wouldnt be able to make a lot of these huge amounts. I have noticed a majority of you guys have pretty high organic spendings, mortgage, rent, kid expense(i see a lot of you guys have this), and big medical bills. Ironically, im jealous of ya'll earning points like crazy(sound so bad) haha.

edit: for example, $8k on amex spg biz was done though MS. the other $2k was organic spendings over a 4 month period.

I believe the "TYPE" will show up as cash advance. Transactions going through is "sale" or AF shows as "FEE" So it probably say "cash advance"
another way to tell is probably where it says how much your cash advance is, im sure it will get deducted when it is an actual cash advance.
Highly suggestive to lower it.

Gearing up for our WDW trip in 8 days. I see they have online food ordering from the MDE app. Anyone use this? How do charges code?

I thought it was recommended to not MS on amex?

First time I did online ordering in August it was awesome. Super fast. November mixed results. This last trip end of January it was nice to not have to stand in line but I don’t know if it was faster. Coded as online/phone/mail charge and restaurants. (I just double checked). Disadvantage is that if you don’t do it you can either use gift cards or do Apple Pay with your Freedom for the 5 times the points. Either way have fun!

I did this last year, and you need to have $1500 in the checking acct and $300 in the savings acct to avoid fees (total $1800). DoC has a list of ways that work as a direct deposit for bank bonuses on his site here: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/knowledge-base/list-methods-banks-count-direct-deposits/#Chase

I was able to transfer $10 from my regular checking account as an ACH push to my new Chase checking account and that worked as a direct deposit (this was about 8 months ago). I think I have to wait until April to do this bonus again (if it's still around) since I closed my checking/savings accounts at the end of Dec.

TopCashBack lets you get your money via ACH to a checking account as a direct deposit, so you might see if one of your shopping portals allows that too, if a simple checking account transfer doesn't trigger the bonus.

ETA: nevermind, I see where you say his list for DD doesn't help you out any...and then I see that TopCashBack doesn't work per his list. Doh!

A report of CIP coding as cash advance on Plastiq over on r/churning, don't want to freak anyone out but might be something to keep an eye on. I've asked what they were paying, will update if they respond. https://www.reddit.com/r/churning/comments/7yutif/daily_discussion_thread_february_20_2018/dujzb7m/
Really sounds like he didn’t know what he was doing. Hoping that’s the case anyways.

Here now if we run out of gc and need to use a cc I’ll let you know but hoping to not run out :-)

can you buy gas gift cards at a gas station with a credit card? IE: buying a marathon gift card at a marathon gas station with my chase freedom card? It has the 5% quarterly bonus at gas stations going on now.
Thanks, Lori

:wave2: from someone who is doing Singapore Suites soon. If you are playing this game slow and steady, and can easily hang tight under 5/24, I'd see no reason not to pick up the Freedom and start earning 5x asap considering your goal is UR. Normally, I wouldn't recommend wasting the 5/24 spot on the Freedom. But if you aren't in need of a different co-brand Chase card. Go for it.

Yeah, I think I can stay under 5/24 - but I'm planning for the SW companion pass play in a little less than 2 years (DH just got it, so we are good through 2019 - thanks to this thread :)) so two of my slots are kinda spoken for. I think the Freedom would be worth it to me, and would keep 2 slots still open, so that is probably next.

And thank you very much. Just did this - apparently I'm close enough to a Chase branch to do it online. Just need to add enough money to the accounts to avoid fees. Pretty good return for parking $15k somewhere, and I'm already a Chase girl with all my CCs. And I think it should be fairly easy for DH to redirect his Direct Deposit to the new account. Yay. That $500 will pay a bunch of annual fees :sunny:

We should change the name of the thread to I love this thread so much!

Thanks for all your help.

I posted a few weeks ago and got some really great advice here. I'm hoping that maybe you all can help me plan my next steps.

I have a CSR (1/18) and JB Plus (1/18). DH just got the CIP (2/18). Originally I was thinking I was going to go for the SW companion pass, but now I'm not sure that is what will work best for us. Now my thoughts are:

1. DH refers me to the CIP next month. Half of the MS for that will go to paying off our upcoming cruise, so that should get 3x UR points. Next year he PCs his to the CIC.
2. After we meet the MS for that, I want to apply for an AMEX business card. Not sure if I want to go the Hilton or SPG route. SPG seems like a better deal, but we have 3 Hilton stays coming up this year, and DH tends to stay in Hiltons for work (although he has to pay with company CC).
3. DH has a Chase Slate from a long time ago that he never uses - can he PC that to a Chase Freedom?
4. According to Cardmatch.com I'm targeted for the Platinum Amex 100k bonus - not sure about the huge AF though.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the explanation...I think it makes sense, esp. to many who might not understand why you might choose the higher bonus/spend. I myself am firmly in the organic spend category,I don't have a ton of excess income to spare, and I pay my bills carefully to hit my spends. I wouldn't,and really couldn't (at this time) make a 10k spend for another 5k points for spg biz. so this offer is lower but my only realistic option. (and I'm thrilled to get it) I can say, back in the days of much easier MS (yup I'm lazy I guess) I did more 'gentle' ms to get my spends.... but now,I'm pretty much out of that arena. So I have to choose wisely to meet my spends.

Yep, I shorthanded my figures, I was counting the bonus in the minimum balances so it's only 1,300 of "my" money between the two accounts, the bonus should cover the rest of the combined 1,800 after they credit. Good of you to point it out.
I did briefly think about opening a Wells Fargo since that still seems to be working for DD, but no bonuses I can take advantage of, so seems like too much work that way. I'd be funding it through Synchrony or my local bank, which could surprise me when it codes, but Synchrony pops up as "P2P" when I transfer into there so not holding out much hope it would work for Chase. They say you have 60 days to do the DD so in theory should be able to have a piece of hubby's paycheck in by that deadline. I think I know what we're discussing at dinner tonight :p

What are MS and organic spending?

MS is manufactured spending such as buying Visa gift cards (which, like money orders are considered a cash equivalent) and using them to buy other items later, or using plastiq to pay your mortgage or other bill that ordinarily would not accept a credit card, or buying money orders and then depositing them back into your own account. In other words you buy a product that you just recycle back to your own account without immediately using the funds to pay something, but you get rewarded with points anyway.

Organic spending is your normal/daily/weekly/monthly expenses such as paying your cable bill, buying groceries, putting gas in your car, that you usually may use a credit card or cash to pay.
