200 RCCL passengers get sick

Well, if they are cleaning the ships it’s not food poisoning.

That’s 500 people with an inability to keep their hands away from their faces, IMO. That’s how DS and I got noro a year or two ago at home. Touch surfaces then bite your nails or eat food with fingers, and that’s the method of transmission. And on a ship that means not eating the bread rolls or cookies or soft serve *cone* or anything else you would hold in your hand to eat. I’d eat a cookie with a fork, but bread might be weird. (Then again it’s not weird to eat french toast with a fork...)

Hose everyone down with sanitizer!!!
But, just so you know, sanitizer does not kill norovirus. Only effective preventative - hand washing. All the time, every time you use the toilet. Or touch hand rails, or push elevator buttons.

And don't touch your nose/mouth with your fingers/hands. Don't use your hands to touch your food before you eat it (think bread/rolls).

Do the wipes they hand out while entering a dining room kill noro?

Ok. This is not entirely correct.
It is true, that vigorous (!) handwashing is much better, than several available wipes and hand sanitizers, but it’s much more complicated beyond that, and it’s NOT true that “sanitizers don’t kill norovirus”.

It is generally accepted that NoroVirus is best killed by chlorine based sanitizers/bleach, and less so by alcohol based wipes and gels and such, and the general thought here is that Norovirus does not have a lipid envelope (such as the influenza virus has!) that these alcoholic sanitizers attack. But now it becomes complicated: human norovirus does not grow well in the lab. Most products are tested on feline Calici-virus instead, also without envelope.
There are some (hand) sanitizers out there that have a combination of lipids and alcohol, that do seem to be very effective, and there are some chlorine based that are not.
I will post more on that in a minute.

I noticed that the aft entrance from the elevators to Cabana's now has multiple hand washing stations on the Disney Fantasy. Don't know if the other ships had a similar change, but a nice change to help combat noro and other nasty things.

They added them to Disney Wonder as well. What I noticed is that many people skip them when there is a line, especially when it seems as if this has become the time parents have decided to teach their children how to properly wash their hands with much instruction. With the number of skips, I think these are less effective than just handing wipes to everyone.

The problem I have with the hand washing stations is that you get water splashed everywhere. And, unlike at home (well, MY home), it never gets wiped up. Water on the deck can cause slippery situations, and it's just gross to have water just laying all over the counter around a sink.

The Wonder had this as well, but I think it would have done even more good if they put in the automated hand washing stations like they have in the kids clubs, they are fast and efficient and get your hands cleaner than anything I have ever seen.

Exactly why I say the automated stations like they have in the kids clubs would do much more good, there wouldn't be such a backup, because it is faster and they do a better job at cleaning.

Argh, I thought that’s what they added - the kids club type stations!

Really helpful. Adding this to my pre-cruise Amazon shopping list!

I seriously just had the exact same thought. :rotfl: I need to get a bunch of tiny ones so they can go in my carry-on. I use Purell-like products, especially after touching any tongs or spoons at the buffets, but clearly that's not going to work with this virus, and I really, really, really don't want to get it. :faint:
