With the impending "Brexit" thing looming for the EU, does anyone know if we will have to clear customs upon arrival in London during travel back to the US (by next summer?)

I don't know that any of that kind of thing has been decided on yet. They kind of left first, and now they're figuring it all out.

The UK is not part of Schengen so you've always had to clear customs/immigration when arriving from other European countries. Having said that, if you are just connecting (and at Heathrow - not sure about Gatwick) you can stay in the "transfer" area and not clear customs/immigration (assuming that you have a single ticket).

This can be really helpful for LHR connections - http://www.heathrow.com/flight-connections

As sirduff mentioned if both your flights are on the same ticket and they're both at Heathrow, you'll be in transit and won't need to clear customs. After getting off the plane and walking a ways there is a fork in the path where if you are going through passport control/customs you go one way and if transiting to another international flight you go the other way.
