Gatlinburg: What's Our Perfect Hotel?

Oh really!! Seriously, have you ever hiked there?? DH & I always wanted to (but now we've waited too late :( ). We still do lots of hikes, but not scheduled ones that are that far one way!

What kept us back from making ressies is the weather is so 'changable', and you have to schedule so far in advance that we never did it. From experience we know that 'most' days Mt. LeConte is in the clouds and lots of days the hike is miserable, and the view while there is 'very' iffy!! Have hiked to top of Chimneys though! :)

Only heard of it. Sounds like what I would do. However, I've done some pretty heavy duty hiking in my day, including backpacking at high altitude. I'm a bit out of shape now, but I'd get in shape for something like this.

I know the LeConte name, although there's some controversy over which LeConte the mountain is named. The LeConte brothers were well known scientists and conservationists who came to the new University of California. LeConte Hall is the UC Berkeley physics building, and there's a LeConte Ave. in Berkeley. Joseph LeConte was a co-founder of the Sierra Club, and there's a Sierra Club building in Yosemite named after him. I guess the biggest controversy was that they owned slaves. Although they stated they didn't particularly like slavery, their positions on race were unapologetically racist.

Okay, good! I'm glad you've been! I think it can probably a bit of a surprise to those who've never been.

The Island in Pigeon Forge is really cool, but I think I like Gatlinburg better too. It has nostalgic value for us too! I like to say in Gatlinburg & visit Pigeon Forge while we're there.

When I was teenager, my family would go w/ another family every fall. There used to be a restaurant located just outside of Gatlinburg... maybe the Trout House? It was "secluded" & located along a mountain stream. You could even select the trout you wanted for dinner. The food was very good, & I remember the biscuits & homemade blackberry jam being absolutely wonderful.

Your memory of Trout House sounds perfect. It appears to be a family style restaurant now, but I'll read reviews to see if it sounds like something we'd enjoy.

We stayed at the country inn and suites. There aren't any amenities at the hotel but it is indoor entry and has a free breakfast with the usual. The strip was a short walk but it was far enough off the strip that it was quiet. There's a bar within a block or so of the hotel. It didn't look like the greatest bar in the world but it was usually busy every time we walked by. So it can't be the worst either. They had live music one night we were there and Karioke the other two. There was also an upstairs tavern across parkway. There's a muni lot you can cut through to shorten that walk, and there are several places to eat nearby. Smokey Mountain brewery is a bit too far a walk for you, from this hotel but there is parking available there that serves it, Cherokee steakhouse, and Calhoun's. BTW all three are owned by the same company.

When we stay in Gatlinburg, we look for something near that particular portion of the strip.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check out Country Inn & Suites & look for restaurants/bars nearby. We don't mind taking Uber for dinner. I'm always running late & need to get there quickly anyway. :o We would like to be able to walk or take the trolley during the day. It sounds like CI&S is a good location for that.

I don't have the time to double-check right now, Pigeon Forge might have a trolley that goes to Tanger. It is very popular.
I would have to refresh my memory and google-map the distance between The Island and Tanger.
Personally, I would not blink at driving... But, if for your own personal reasons and preferences you want to try not to do any driving, then there might be a trolley????

Personally, I have never been a fan of the Park Vista... Not only dated, but many design flaws... do not like the tiny rooms with the closed in cement walls on the balconies. Last time we were there, we def. had a poor experience and made the decision to plan to host a big reunion event at another resort. (Mainstay Suites at Pigeon Forge, with their little convention center that was newly opening at the time) That was the one place that I thought would benefit from being burned down and re-built last Fall!!!

For your getaway, and the preferences that you have described, I think I would still recommend Margaritaville at The Island.

We went to The Island & Tanger Outlets, but I don't remember how far apart they were. It didn't seem that far, but someone else was driving. I realize most people aren't as opposed to driving as we are. We commute every day on what has been labeled death highway in this area. The traffic is horrific. We see multiple accidents a day. For that reason, it's not a vacation to us, if we have to deal with traffic.

We have a personal connection to Park Vista that makes it special to us. On our stay there 25 years ago, we came home with a souvenir that's now in college. ;) He's an only child, which makes it even more special to us. Apparently, it's been renovated recently, but the location is still a consideration. We've tossed around the idea of a split stay, but that may be more effort than it's worth. I'll mention Margaritaville to DH to see what he thinks about staying in PF instead of Gburg. It does sound like that & a couple more hotels in PF are a better fit for us.

Condo: RiverStone in Pigeon Forge. It is right off the main road and convenient to everything.
Food: classic steakhouse The Peddler in Gatlinburg, we prefer Alamo steakhouse in Pigeon Forge.

We usually stay at Quality Inn Creekside which is right next to Cherokee Grill, Calhoun's, Smokey Mountain Brewery and a nice shopping village. Across the street is Crocketts Breakfast Camp which is our favorite breakfast restaurant. The Park Grill is also within walking distance.

Thanks for the suggestion. That sounds like a great location. I'll look into it.
Maybe?

It seemed like it was a little bit of a drive outside of Gatlinburg though... kinda along that creek? It was back in some woods. And you walked along a wooden boardwalk up the restaurant. The restaurant was right on the creek. The last time I was there I was 16, so I could be remembering it all wrong or it could not be there any more.

Does anyone remember the Burning Bush restaurant w/ the birdcages?

Ooh! There's also Dolly Parton's DreamMore Resort in Pigeon Forge - http://www.dollywood.com/resort/

They have a sit down restaurant, a quick service restaurant, & a lounge/bar.

But I understand wanting to be within walking distance of everything in Gatlinburg too.

My mother would like to try the Christmas Inn too - I think it's also in Pigeon Forge.

Christmas Inn & Dreammore both look very nice. PF has at least three hotels that we would love. We'll need to decide, if they're worth changing our plans for.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's too bad Alamo in Gatlinburg burned down.

We've only rented cabins or stay at the Park Vista. Like the pp said, Downtown Gatlinburg is not really within walking distance because the property sits high on a hill. However, downtown parking is at the bottom of the hill upon entering/exiting the property (across from Dunkin Donut). It's very convenient. If you stay there, request a high floor city view.

I do believe that one trolley route does run up and down to the Park Vista.
I am not sure how late into the evening it would run.
All the routes and schedules should be posted online.
OP, I would pull up trolley info, and visitor info for Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, both.

Also, pull up Googlemaps too, for locations.
I googled The Island/Margaritaville and Tanger/Chop House... 3 miles, but 10 minutes or more with all of the lights and possible traffic.

Happy Planning!

Hopefully it's expanded since then, but when a girlfriend and I stayed in Pigeon Forge in July 2015, Ubers were super scarce in both PF and Gatlinburg. We were really hoping to be able to readily call on one for an evening at the Hard Rock in PF or moonshine tasting afternoon at all the amazing distilleries in Gatlinburg. Unfortunately, there were no Ubers within range when we needed them nor cab companies willing to take us (all that we called said they/their drivers were "off" in the evenings to enjoy their families). I ended up being the DD far more often than I would have liked--especially since like you, OP, I like to avoid driving at all on vacation.
We stayed at the Country Cascades in PF and found it nice and VERY reasonable for the price. It was also in walking distance of a TGIF that had great late night app and drink specials. But I definitely would have preferred to have stayed in Gatlinburg and be able to walk to more bars/restaurants/attractions.

If you're looking at dining at places like Calhouns and Smoky Mountain Brewery, the Hilton Garden Inn may be a decent fit for you. It's a Gatlinburg block off the strip. I really liked the location of it. I was traveling solo (as a baby faced 30 year old female), and only got in the car when it was time to go to the national park or somewhere in the Pigeon Forge area. I walked everywhere on the main strip in Gatlinburg.

Thanks for the view suggestion. We were thinking we'd use the shuttle or Uber most of the time, if we choose to stay at PV. Now, I'm seeing we may not be able to rely on Uber or cabs. That's definitely something to consider.

Good to know. We definitely need to find out the Uber/cab situation, before we make further plans. The "spending time with family" reason is so strange to me. Many people work second & third shift & still manage to spend time with their families. It seems they'd make more money on tips in the evening & want to work. :confused3

Thanks for the suggestion. HGI sounds like a good location. Being able to walk to most things is a definite plus.
