Discovery Cove review - April 12, 2016

It definitely is high on my to-do list! I want to go especially for the aviary (I love birds)

Hi I loved your trip report.:yay: We are going this July and I bought the elite package. This includes a cabana and swim package. I have a few questions I noticed there were pics of you and your husband. Was that from your camera or do they have photographers walking around? Do you get to interact with the otters? I like the idea of getting the wet suit for the dolphin swim then changing to the vest. I am a warm water person so may have to think about that.
:thanks:

Thanks! All the pictures (other than the ones of the dolphin swim) were taken with my camera (my husband has long arms that serve as a good 'selfie stick'!) When we purchased the dolphin swim photo package, they told us any other photos taken that day would also be included but the aviary seemed to be the only other area with a photographer. We made a point of finding them and getting some photos with the birds but they weren't great photos. I didn't see any other photographers so if you would like photos of your day (other than the dolphin swim), I'd plan on bringing your own camera.

The otters are behind glass so you're not interacting with them but the viewing is pretty neat (ie. you're in the water and you can view them above or below the water...if the otters are in the water, it almost feels like you're swimming with them but you're separated by glass).

Hope that helps. Discovery Cove is awesome, I'm sure you'll have a great trip! :)

I have been wanting to go here for so long! We are a family of 5 and I would like to make sure the kids are old enough to enjoy (I know the minimum age is 6). Did you see a lot of kids there? Also, what was the disposable camera you used? I think the pics are pretty good. Did you use this camera all day? Great report!

Thanks! Yes, there were definitely lots of kids there. I saw lots of kids just having fun playing in the sand as well as swimming in the grand reef (assuming your kids aren't freaked out by the idea of swimming with fish & rays).

There were a few photos at the beginning of my trip report that were taken with my Nikon DSLR but after breakfast, I put it in a locker and used the waterproof camera for the rest of the day. It wasn't a disposable, it was a Fuji FinePix (I think they are around $200). I wanted something that would shoot video as well as take photos and it did a pretty good job. I think Walmart has some cheaper waterproof camera options ($50 to $70 range) if you're looking for something cheaper but a step up from a disposable.

You can get the Fuji Finepix waterproof cameras frequently on amazon lightly used for $60. I got one a couple of years ago and love it (I also bought it for D.C.!), and I bought DSD one for our trip this year so she can take pics too. $60 was the most I spent. I think mine was $55? I do recommend the floating wrist straps though, so you don't have to dive if you drop it!

Thank you for your amazing review. I am seriously considering this for a surprise trip for my daughters 12th birthday next month.
What an awesome birthday gift that would be! I got an e-mail last week about a spring sale if you book before May 17th ($80 off dolphin swim packages in June). Here's the link:
