Amanda & Jeff 12/7/15 - YCG/Marina/Ariel's/France - Update 10/25: Napa Rose Chefs Counter!

Yay DCA! We stayed offsite during our one DL trip, but I feel like once you stay at the Grand Californian it'd be hard to stay elsewhere. I want to stay there so badly!

Forgive me as I'm trying to avoid WOC/Paint the Night/any DLR entertainment that I might see in the future, but is Celebrate the subtitle for the regular WOC show? Kevin loves it so much (he says it's the only thing that comes close to topping Illuminations), it just had me wondering!

WOC Celebrate is the special version of the show that they have for the 60th anniversary. I loved Celebrate, but Jeff says he prefers the regular WOC. I assume after the 60th anniversary celebration ends, the show will go back to the normal WOC.

Ahhh holiday time at DLR is the best! So many pretty photos! Carthay circle is our favorite place to eat in the parks. We love that their menu changes on a regular basis so you can get something a little different every season. Did you get to watch world of color from the terrace at the GCH at all while you stayed there??

This was our first time seeing Disneyland at Christmas, and it was amazing! Carthay was awesome, though Napa Rose Chefs Counter was our favorite meal on our honeymoon. We didn't see World of Color from the terrace! We watched a little bit one night from our balcony, but it was cold and foggy.

December 12th - The VIP Life

We woke up on Saturday ready for a very exciting day! I’m not sure if I mentioned it earlier, but during our wedding, one of our guests approached us and asked if she could do something magical during our Disneyland trip. This was the same guest that got us into Club 33, so I wasn’t sure what other magic she could possibly make. But I found out that she was able to book an eight hour VIP tour for us while we were in Disneyland! She was also able to get us VIP viewing for the Christmas parade and the Paint the Night parade.

We were supposed to meet our VIP tour guide in the lobby of the Grand Californian at 10 am, so we decided to get breakfast before that. We grabbed some food in Whitewater Snacks, and right around 10, we headed to the lobby.

There were several guides in the lobby, but we weren’t sure which one was ours. When the group of them saw us approach in our Just Married buttons, they asked if we were the newlyweds from Florida. We obviously were, so they directed us to our tour guide, Colby. Let me just say that Colby was a big Star Wars fan, so he and Jeff had a LOT to talk about. Especially since this was only a few days before the release of the Force Awakens.

We went with Colby to the Grand Californian’s entrance into DCA, while he explained how his tours worked. He said that our eight hours would be enough time to get almost everything done in both parks, depending on what we wanted to do. He asked if there was anything specific we wanted to see for sure. I said Hyperspace Mountain, and Jeff said he wanted to meet Thor and Spiderman. Colby made a phone call and was able to set up a meet and greet time with them when we park hopped over to Disneyland.

Our first ride was Soarin’, and it was crazy to basically skip the entire line to ride. We’ve never been on Disneyland’s version of Soarin’ because it’s basically exactly the same as ours, but it was worth doing since there was no line! After Soarin, we hit Tower of Terror, and then we walked through Bugs Land into Cars Land.

In Cars Land, we rode Radiator Springs Racers, and then we headed to Paradise Pier. I decided that I didn’t want to ride California Screamin’ because I thought it might make me sick. So instead we rode Toy Story Mania. At that point, we had pretty much hit every major ride in DCA, so we headed out to hop over to Disneyland. I remember stopping for a drink and awkwardly asking Colby if he wanted anything. We weren’t sure if we were supposed to offer to buy food and stuff for our tour guide. Colby did ask if we would buy him a bottle of water, and we did.

When we got to Disneyland, one of the first things we did was go to Superhero Headquarters to meet Thor and Spiderman, like Jeff wanted. The SHIELD agent let us have the room to ourselves when we met Thor.

I’m really bitter about this because I know I’m worthy to wield the hammer. Thor is CLEARLY holding it down, so I can’t realize my true potential.

Dumb Thor and his dumb hammer.

Then we headed over to see Spiderman, which was awesome!

And after meeting the superheroes, we rode Hyperspace Mountain!

You can see Colby behind us.

Soon it was time for our VIP viewing of the Christmas parade. Our viewing area was at the top of the train station, and it was awesome.

One of the only pictures of the Christmas parade we took.

After the parade, we were pretty hungry, so we headed to eat at El Rancho del Zocalo, a Mexican quick service restaurant in the Adventureland/Frontierland area. We offered to buy lunch for Colby, but he said he was going to go to his break room for a bit while we ate. When we were almost done eating, he came back, and we formulated our plan for the rest of the afternoon.

First we rode Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and I think we did Indiana Jones as well. Then we headed to Haunted Mansion Holiday.

I’m not sure if we rode Pirates of the Caribbean while we were in the area, but I can’t imagine me passing up the opportunity to ride it. We may have ridden Jingle Cruise as well, but I can’t remember for sure. I do know that we soon headed into Fantasyland and rode the Matterhorn. There are two sides, and we had done one side on our first day. Now it was time to do the second. Well turns out on the second side, you get wet. I got splashed in the face when we went through the water part!

In Fantasyland, we also rode it’s a small world holiday.

I wanted to ride Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, but those were two of the only rides that don’t give preferred access to VIP tours.

I think we did some other Fantasyland rides before heading back to do some more in Tomorrowland. Their Buzz Lightyear is awesome… the guns are not attached to the vehicle like they are in WDW, so they’re easier to maneuver! After Buzz, it was getting late, but we had time for one more thing. I requested Hyperspace Mountain again.

We took this photo in line.

Unfortunately, Hyperspace Mountain was having some technical difficulties while we were in line, and we weren’t sure how long it would be. We were given the option of waiting or doing one different last thing, since our time was almost over for our tour. Jeff asked if it was possible to meet Chewbacca, since we were in the area. Colby made a phone call and said yes, they could fit us in!

After meeting Chewy, our tour time was done, so we thanked Colby and said goodbye to him. We also tipped him because apparently it isn’t required but is appreciated to tip VIP tour guides.

By now, it was a little past 6 pm, and Disneyland was PACKED. This was by far the busiest day that I have ever seen at the park, and it wasn’t as easily manageable without our VIP tour guide anymore. What can I say, I got spoiled.

Jeff had a friend in the park, so we met her for a while to chat. Then they went to go ride some things, but we were tired from our busy day at the park. We headed back to our hotel to grab some food. We decided to eat in the Hearthstone Lounge, the bar in our hotel.

I believe I got some sliders and a glass of wine, and I don’t remember what Jeff got. Although the wine made me pretty sleepy after our exhausting day, it was really nice to sit and have a nice relaxing dinner on our honeymoon. After eating, we headed back to the room to watch some TV and go to sleep. We ended up totally blowing off our VIP viewing for Paint the Night because we were so tired! Luckily we had seen it earlier in the week, so we didn't feel obligated to go.

In the next update: a character breakfast where we got no pictures!

Such a fun day with a tour guide! You really did have the vip life in disneyland during your honeymoon!

Such a fun day with a tour guide! You really did have the vip life in disneyland during your honeymoon!

We really did! I kept joking that the trip made us elitists. I'm so happy we had such an amazing honeymoon because I truly don't think we'll ever have a trip like that again, unless we win the lottery or something!

December 13th - The Fantasmic Dinner Package that Wasn't

Earlier in the week, when we had met our friend in Disneyland, he mentioned that he had breakfast reservations at Storytellers Cafe on Sunday. Jeff said something about Storytellers being the only restaurant in the Grand Californian that we didn’t have plans to eat at, and our friend ended up adding us to his breakfast reservation!

Storytellers is a buffet breakfast with what I would call woodland characters, including Meeko and the bears from Brother Bear. I have literally no photos of this breakfast, possibly because the only character that even came by our table for a second was Meeko. I’ve been to a lot of character meals where everyone is an adult, but I’ve never been completely ignored by the characters like we were at Storytellers. We ate and left relatively quickly because we just weren’t thrilled with the experience.

After breakfast, we headed to DCA through the special Grand Californian entrance. We were a little worried because the Grand Californian entrance to DCA can only be used by resort guests before 11 am, and our friend wasn’t staying at the resort. But they were only checking one room key per party, so we were able to get through fine.

Christmas tree at DCA

Since we had already done pretty much everything that we wanted to do at this point in the trip, we started our morning shopping. I don’t remember if Jeff bought anything, but I bought a super cute had that I absolutely NEEDED.

I stepped out of the store to watch the Red Car News Boys perform, and then I spotted Minnie in the distance.

I texted Jeff to let him know that I was in line for Minnie, and he met up with me in time to get some photos.

Then he joined me for some.

Not sure why the lighting is so weird.

After seeing Minnie, we decided that we wanted to see Viva Navidad again because we liked it so much. So off to Paradise Pier we went.

Okay, I know that’s a lot of pictures, but we really loved Viva Navidad. After getting through all those, here's a cute picture of us.

Then we headed back to Buena Vista Street, where Jeff spent a long time trying to take a cool picture.

After riding literally nothing, we headed to Downtown Disney to do a little shopping. We came up with the idea to get each other a Christmas/birthday present, so we split up for a while and met back at the room. I don’t have any pictures of it, but I got Jeff a cool Disney watch. Jeff got me a Mickey’s Fun Wheel Pandora charm. Except I didn’t have a Pandora bracelet. That’s when he said he was going to get me one later that night, but he didn’t want to get it without me because he wanted to make sure it was the right one. Eeeeee, I was so excited about getting a Pandora bracelet!

We took a nap early in the afternoon, and we were hungry when we woke up. Off to Disneyland for a late lunch! We headed to the Plaza Inn for some pasta.

Christmas tree at the Plaza Inn

After lunch, we headed deeper into the park.

I believe we did the Sleeping Beauty Castle walkthrough and watched a little bit of the Frozen show at Fantasy Faire. I think this was also the day that we saw Mickey and the Magical Map. It’s a really great show that features some lesser appreciated characters, like Mulan, Pocahontas, Rapunzel, Stitch, and Tiana!

Later in the afternoon, we took the train and also this terrible selfie.

We also rode Winnie the Pooh and checked out their gift shop.

Disneyland goes all out for Christmas. Even the Pooh gift shop was decorated.

Before we headed to our dinner reservation, we took a ride on the Mark Twain Riverboat.

Then we went to check in for dinner at the Blue Bayou. We were early, so they gave us a pager and let us explore New Orleans Square. Naturally, we went right into the Pandora store and bought a bracelet and charm.

Best present ever!

Soon our buzzer went off, and we were walked into the Blue Bayou!

I don’t have any pictures from the inside because it’s rather dark, but everything we had was so good! The restaurant is pricey due to the atmosphere, but I have always felt that I got my money's worth eating there. We've always had a good experience there. We were on the Fantasmic dining package, so appetizer, entree, dessert, and drink were a flat price. Jeff also wanted their specialty truffles for the 60th anniversary, so we paid additional for that. Included in the dinner package were two cushions to sit on during Fantasmic, and our Fantasmic Fastpasses.

After dinner, we rode Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion Holiday while we waited for Fantasmic time. We went to our designated meeting location when it was time to go into our preferred viewing, and that’s when we found out that the first show of Fantasmic was cancelled due to rain. They told us they could try to accommodate us for the second showing if that one didn’t get cancelled too. Now you have to imagine us being very full, very cold, and getting rained on. We did not want to wait around for the second Fantasmic, especially since we weren’t sure it would happen.

We did head down to Main Street to at least watch the Disneyland Forever fireworks, since we hadn’t seen them yet. Well, that got rained out too. I was happy for California that it was raining because of the whole drought thing, but I was pretty sad for us. Cold and wet, we decided to call it a night and head back to the hotel.

In the next update: Our last full day at Disneyland.

What a fun trip! The Viva Navidad is a wonderful holiday show!

That is such a bummer about fantasmic being cancelled! We were at the parks on the 13th for our anniversary trip. I was shocked at how bad the rain was that night, especially with how the day started. It usually doesn't rain like that in December.

I didn't realize the Blue Bayou fantasmic package came with a seat cushion. Once fantasmic is back, I just might have to check that out.

I'm loving reading your report! Note to self: add 'see Disney parks at Christmas' to bucket list

What a bummer about Storyteller's! We went last February, just me and (brand new) DF and Chip & Dale and the bears came to our table. The older bear (don't know their names...) even sat with us for awhile and was playing with stuff on the table. We (or I  ) had to chase down Meeko for a picture though - I loved Pocahontas growing up.

Bummer about the rain too. We had rain on our first day, but it ended up working out mostly. The park wasn't too busy to start with, then it rained that afternoon and it emptied out. We spent the rain time doing Finding Nemo and then our Fantasmic dinner at River Belle Terrace. It stopped by the time we were done, but the show and the afternoon parade had been rained out. They gave us a note to come back and get our passes the next night - the just engaged buttons may have helped! :thumbsup2 But they did do the fireworks. And then, because the park was so empty, we rode Indian Jones 4 times in a row without getting off!

We did lunch at Blue Bayou and I thought it was delicious! And such a cool atmosphere - Disney magic at work to me, making me feel like I was right on the water at night when through the doors was 2pm CA sun! We also watched Mickey and the Magical Map on a whim, which ended up messing our plans to parkhop and see the Aladdin musical, but the Map show was so neat!

I love that Jeff wanted to get you a Pandora bracelet! I got one for Valentine's right before our trip (because somebody planned on getting charms at the park for it). I love it because I've just picked charms with special meaning - 2 that DF picked out when buying it, then a Disney charm from our trip, London and Paris charms for my trip last fall (and a Harry Potter charm from visiting the studios in London :D ). I'm just waiting on my bellabead charms to come now, and I'd still like to pick one to represent the engagement and put it by the Disney charm (they're all in chronological order lol). I know I'll get another at Disneyland this summer!

Aww, so sorry you missed Fantasmic! We did the Blue Bayou dinner package during our trip last fall too and we absolutely thought it was worth the money and the food/atmosphere was SO good. In fact, we both got the filet mignon with lobster and we added everything up and found that we actually got a BETTER deal by going with the Fantasmic package than buying everything a la carte. We're definitely going to do the package again when we go this December...not its VIP seating for Paint the Night!

Love your Pandora bracelet! It really is the best birthday present! We went to Disneyland around my birthday and my DF got me the Sleeping Beauty castle charm, which I love. I wanted to get the Mickey's Fun Wheel one too, but he talked me out of it by telling me it would be more special to get just one charm to commemorate every trip. Then when it was our anniversary in December, he gave me the Mickey's Fun Wheel charm which he snuck out to buy while I was in the 30-minute line to get a mint julep :P The bracelet really makes for a special gift for years to come <3

Wow, I can't believe you were totally ignored at Storytellers. For all the things that people say DLR does better than WDW, that's something I've never seen in FL - everyone I know who does character meals usually gets tons of attention whether they have kids with them or not!

I love your casual day between the parks, it's so nice to really relax and enjoy the atmosphere. I definitely think you're paying for the location at Blue Bayou, but it's still on my list to try out someday!!

If you can swing it, it is worth checking out Blue Bayou while pirates is under refurbishment. You can really hear all the bayou sounds so it feels like you're having a nice dinner outside in a bayou (minus all heat and humidity).

Love Viva Navidad! Ugh yes, we were disappointed with the rain, but what can you do, you know? The cushion is like a purple foam. It seemed relatively comfortable, though we never actually got to use it.

Thanks for following along! WDW at Christmas is really nice, but Disneyland at Christmas is amazing!

We were kinda disappointed at Storytellers, but it was so last minute for us that we weren't too bothered. Blue Bayou and Mickey and the Magical Map are so awesome though!

I have two Pandora charms from Disneyland, one from WDW, and my Bellabead. I'm hoping to get a new one when we go to Shanghai Disneyland this summer!

Yeah, we got our money's worth even without Fantasmic, so we weren't too upset. Aww I love my Fun Wheel charm! It's my second favorite charm after the Bellabead I got made out of my wedding bouquet petals.

We've had two other character meals at Disneyland in the past (Goofy's Kitchen and Plaza Inn), and we had a ton of character interaction at both! I'm not exactly sure if this was it, but I notice that they often seat entire sections at a time at character meals. Then the characters go and visit that whole section. I'm thinking maybe we were seated after the characters had visited our section. Oh well.

That was the nice thing about being there for a whole week. By the end of the week, we had pretty much ridden everything we wanted, so we just enjoyed the atmosphere. People say that you're just paying for the location at Blue Bayou, but we've always gotten food that was worth our money too! Highly recommend, especially for a unique experience.

If you can swing it, it is worth checking out Blue Bayou while pirates is under refurbishment. You can really hear all the bayou sounds so it feels like you're having a nice dinner outside in a bayou (minus all heat and humidity).

Oooooh, if we ever visit while Pirates is under refurbishment, we'll have to try this. Thanks for the tip!

Finally read through your PJ and I must say, your wedding was gorgeous! I loved all of the colors and your dress is amazing! I'm glad you had a wonderful time on your honeymoon and hoped you enjoyed the cruise!

Congrats! :wizard:

Hi everyone! I know I've been kind of MIA for a while (I've been busy!), but I wanted to make an appearance to give you all a link to our wedding video from Trinity!

I love the video so much! It took almost 8 months, but it was worth it. I'm so glad we ended up paying for videography in the end.

December 14 - Last Full Day at Disneyland, Plus Napa Rose

Hello! Long time no see everyone! Life has been busy, but my trip report is almost done. Can't stop now! Maybe at the end of the trip report, I'll do a little epilogue of what our first year of married life brought us.

But as far as the trip report, December 14th was our last full day at Disneyland, so we started with a rope drop.

Our first stop was Peter Pan's Flight, since I had never been on the Disneyland version.

It was so cold out that I was wearing two hats.

Had to stop for this photo op...

...on our way to the Finding Nemo subs.

I love that ride, even though it's a little claustrophobic.

Since we were in Tomorrowland, we stopped for breakfast at the "Galactic Grill," aka the Star Wars themed Tomorrowland Terrace.

The French toast was blue, presumably for a Star Wars reason? It wasn't the best breakfast ever, but it did the job.

After we ate, we went into the Launch Bay, per Jeff's request.

We also caught part of the Jedi Training Academy. We like to watch it because the little kids fighting Darth Vader are pretty adorable.

It has been quite a while since this trip, so I can't remember exactly what we did next. Per my photos, though, it seems that at some point, we decided to have lunch at the Jolly Holiday bakery.

It was too sunny for me at the outdoor seating, so Jeff let me switch hats with him.

But I needed to put my hat back on for this photo.

Then, because we were spending a lazy day on our last full day, we went back to our room for a nap. Soon it was time to get ready for dinner at the Napa Rose Chefs Counter!

So fancy!

Napa Rose is the signature restaurant at the Grand Californian. There are a limited number of seats each night for the Chefs Counter, and you have to call the restaurant directly to book it. Thankfully, I was able to get a reservation on the night I wanted! At the Chefs Counter, you could choose to order from the regular menu, from the Vintner's Table prix-fixe menu, or from the Tasting Menu. We chose the Tasting Menu, which is a six course meal where the chefs choose your dishes. You tell them what you like and dislike, and they bring out whatever they decide to make for you. We also decided to add the wine pairings because it was our honeymoon, and why not? For the Tasting Menu plus the wine pairings, it was $150/person. This is sort of steep, but also, I felt like this type of experience would be much more expensive at Walt Disney World.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact dishes we had, but I do have some pictures! Use your imagination, because I can't exactly remember what's inside of each dish. Also, the dishes are seasonal, so they would be different on a future trip anyway.

This was the amuse-bouche to start off our meal.

Jeff was served this salad:

And I was served this salad:

Then came appetizers. (Again, really sorry that I don't exactly remember what everything was!)

I was feeling pretty good after a few glasses of wine.

Sorbet was the palette cleanser before our entrees.

My entree was beef, and Jeff's was lamb.

This is how close to the kitchen we were. That's Jeff's wine glass in the foreground.

If you've never had Napa Rose's hot chocolate, it is AMAZING. The people next to us at the Chefs Counter requested it, and we did too after we heard them. Seriously, it's a must do.

And finally dessert! Mine was chocolate.

Jeff's was an apple pastry.

And that was our meal! It was seriously amazing. It was honestly so good that I would consider going back as our "big meal" every time we go visit Disneyland. I would give up several less expensive table service meals at Disneyland to eat here again. And overall, the price is really pretty reasonable when you consider how much you get.

After dinner, we were so full of food and wine that we basically went right back to our room and passed out. The following day would be our last day at Disneyland!
