For those of you who are lucky enough to have a companion pass thru SW. Be aware that if you buy early bird boarding for the companion you will not get a refund "on the early bird" if you make any changes to that reservation. I bought early bird boarding on the first day fares opened, about 2 months later the fairs dropped and when I went to change the reservation for the new fares, the early bird boarding for the original companion pass became nonrefundable. Thus I would have to pay again for the "early bird" on the new companion portion of the new reservation.
Next time I won't buy the early bird boarding until about 1 month before the flight!

Yup. Unfortunately found out the exact same thing today. $60 for the flights we have planned though was still significantly less than the cost of the flights!

I'm under the impression you can retain the early bird as long as you keep the same reservation number, which the phone agents can do for you.

In order to make changes on a reservation that has a companion pass on it you have to cancel the companion pass then make a change to the reservation then attach a new companion pass onto it. Consequently, if you had an "early bird boarding" attached to the old companion pass it becomes nonrefundable, and the new companion pass will have a new reservation number and if you want early bird you would have to pay for it again.

Note the original reservation will have the same reservation number and the early bird will stay with it.

I tried - the phone agent said that because I was canceling my DH's existing ticket and rebooking as a companion, it wouldn't retain the EB attached to the paid ticket. I was able to retain my EB on my reservation. While it wouldn't really matter - generally I sit in the same row as our kids (they like to watch movies together, etc) and DH sits close by so EB isn't really crucial for him, checking in at 24 hours while in US or Disney is the harder part! So, I just re-purchased the EB for him.

I should probably have been more specific in my response. My understanding is that the phone representatives can keep EBCI on the companion if you're only adjusting the price. They can do that without cancelled no the companion, even though you can't accomplish it online. If you're actually changing the flight, then, yes, the companion must be cancelled and EBCI is not refunded.

I only tried the online method. Maybe the phone representatives would be able to help but the next time, if I am lucky enough to get the companion pass, I will hold off on getting the EBCI until about 2 months before my flights. I just wanted to let people know that there could be a problem with changing a ressie when a companion pass is involved.

yup that's true..... I only book ebci after I'm really sure I'm done changing, and once I had to suck it up and pay anyway but IMHO that CP is worth so much more so no sorries overall...
