Who’s excited about the Barbie movie?

Without giving anything away - it’s not all hilariously funny, it is actually quite poignant and thought provoking.

In a good way? Or in the way Saturday Night Fever suddenly took a serious turn at the end of the movie? I loved all the disco dancing in that movie, but it took a major turn in the road towards the end.

I just wish it was Rated G. My 8 year old granddaughters want to see it after seeing and hearing all the hype about it but it is not rated for that young. They just went to the Barbie pop up experience in NYC and loved that so were looking forward to the movie.

Imzadi, it is good - I get what you mean about Saturday Night Fever, it just wraps the seriousness up with the playfulness of Barbie color / fashion etc but Greta Gerwig has a serious undertone to the movie. Tweens and kids won’t “get it” necessarily but I think anyone mid-teens and up will understand the underlying theme.

I hate when movies, in which the subject matter could include kids watching, does that to get a more adult rating because the movie execs or even the writer thinks adults won't watch otherwise.

AustinTink turned me onto The Queen's Gambit. I loved it. 🥰 I was a real chess nerd in high school. The movie has some sex, foul language and other elements that could have been left out so the movie could have been for kids too, to turn them onto chess. ♟️

My college-aged daughter saw it tonight. She’s a film student so she sees most of the new movies. She said it was the best movie she’s seen this year, and she was never a Barbie fan growing up. Most of the people in the theater were decked out in pink.

She said the movie has all real sets (instead of CGI), is visually appealing, paid homage to people’s nostalgia and love of Barbie, confronted the problematic issues with Barbie, presents a social commentary on identity, gender roles, and existentialism, and is funny too. She compared it to the Lego Movie.

My son is a film school graduate and a fan of Greta Gerwig’s work. He is seeing it tonight and will give me his take but I’m expecting similar feedback.

My DH and I got to the movies every weekend, so I had seen the Barbie trailer enough times to know it wasn’t all pink paradise. What sold me in the trailer was when it said if you love Barbie this movie is for you and if you don’t love Barbie this movie is also for you (paraphrasing).

Meeeee! Rented out a theater to have an adult birthday party. Geeking out with Barbie and Ken tee shirts, heart sunglasses plus a pink and a rainbow cake...pink candy too! I even bought the OPI Barbie collection with the display for the granddaughters. They are loving their mani pedis.💕

I got my first Barbie doll when I was three years old and I also had gotten my first Ken doll also at three and my mother and I would spend hours playing with my Barbies and dressing them up and I even collected Barbie houses too that I still have today that my Marvel figures hang out in now. To be honest I didn't even realize that there was a live-action Barbie movie gonna be made until I heard the news about it last year and I think that Barbie The Movie will be a monster hit and introduce a new generation of fans to Barbie. I cannot figure out how today's Barbies are not like the Barbies of the 90's 80's and 70's because they were made of good quality and were awesome. But if you look at Barbies today the quality of the dolls is weak because they put fragile limbs and the heads come off too easily and I cannot see how Mattel continues to sell Barbies that are made like this. I also think why they wanted to put a Barbie movie in theaters was to see how successful it would become. Because prior to Barbie The Movie Barbie animated movies became a huge fad beginning with the first movie Barbie In The Nutcracker in 2001 and I think these Barbie movies were made to sell more Barbies and with this new movie Mattel is gonna do the same thing. But I think Mattel is mainly focusing on celebrity dolls to add to the Barbie line because just recently before her death Tina Turner had a Barbie doll made as did Queen Elizabeth II and now there's a Gloria Estefan Barbie made as well so it tells you that Mattel and Warner Bros will make a lot of money with Barbie The Movie

i’m not excited about the movie, but I do want to see the movie. I’m not a Ryan Gosling fan, and I’m confused on why someone younger isn’t playing Ken - maybe I’ll have a change of mind once I see the movie.

I loved my Barbies as a kid - my dad built me the most AWESOME Barbie house - he put carpet, tile, wallpaper and more in it and on it - my friends were so jealous.

I saw it and enjoyed it on two levels. The little girl in me that loved playing with Barbies and coveted having a Barbie dream house was thrilled. I especially loved Weird Barbie because I had one that I cut the hair off of and did her makeup with markers. 🤣🌈

The other level was unexpected but I should have realized because it's a Greta Gerwig movie. She thinks about things on a deeper level which I appreciate. Barbie has been a huge part of American culture and I love that Mattel allowed commentary on that. There was a lot about the roles of men and women which of course is a huge topic. I thought it was great but I'm sure there will be plenty of people who take it too seriously and will feel like there was a message being forced on them when they thought they were going to see just a cute, fun movie.

You must've seen a different movie. SPOILER ALERT: It was not about chess.

Have been looking forward to it for weeks. All the trailers that have been released look incredibly fun. And I think it is one movie to watch it with friends in the theaters, and make a night out of it.

Also video like this... I think we have a new piece of culture here. We needed words like Ken-curious, Ken-fused and Ken-ergy 😀

YESSSSS so excited to see it! Don’t have tickets/plans yet, DH and I need to get a babysitter for the little one to make that happen.

Not interested. I didn’t own Barbies as a child and I’m a boy mom. My sisters and I had Tammy in the 60’s (a Barbie competitor from Ideal), but I wasn’t much into dolls. Sorry, never quite understood all the Barbie hype.

So I was curious about Greta Gerwig as I don't really know her work. You have got to google her name. It is a really cute effect.
