Splash Mountain Characters Also Retired?

Lol, these are some very selective quotations from the Harris wikipedia page. Many others you didn’t include don’t seem to share such a favorable view of his, erm, cultural borrowings.

And Irish immigrants were lower class, sure, but calling them minorities in comparison to enslaved African Americans is a real stretch.
Racism is racism and knows no color.
The Irish race was discriminated and subjugated and treated as a sub human class up to the end of the 19th century.

You know where the racist term Paddy Wagon comes from, right.

Don’t discount the racism against the Irish that was prevalent up till the 20th Century. That would be ignorant.

I believe that they will actually keep a lot of the animatronics, like the singng animals, etc. That's one of the reasons that they went with Tiana for the ride as it already fits a little. Assuming the riverboat scene is still the finale (totally works) then I bet the "America Sings" birds, etc. will remain. The named characters - Br'er Rabbit, Fox, etc. will be gone or heavily redressed at any rate.

I think the bigger issue for Disney is that by raising prices/no AP/genie/Star Wars Galactic Cruiser Hotel they are pricing out minorities and African Americans who are disproportionately poor/not rich in US society.
Disney is using economics to segregate.
So they can virtue signal with their cancelling Splash Mountain all they want but they are pricing out the minorities for whom they profess splash is being erased and the Tiana ride is being built.
It’s de facto segregation. If they really wanted equality and progressiveness they wouldn’t price the minorities out.

Maybe you'd have a fairer comparison if you were looking at how the Irish were treated in Ireland by the British. In the US they were treated as any other poor immigrant.

Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah is offensive and must be destroyed. Cardi B's hit "song" was named 2020 Song of the Year. And the abbreviated title didn't stand for Walt's Awesome Parks. LOL

The world is officially insane. I ain't saying it's over yet, but the carbohydrate-challenged birthing person is warming up.

Why can’t Disney just put a disclaimer at the entrance to SM like they do for all their “offensive” movies on Disney+? I don’t understand it either.

Why did you put offensive in quotes? 🤨

Well, honestly, there are some things on Disney+ that carry that warning and I don't even know why. Somebody, somewhere must see something, but I don't always, and I generaally do lean toward the sensitive side too!

Thank you.

I wish I wish with all my heart, for folks to stop bending over backwards to defend racism :wizard:

I think his answer proves is not because of that. Even for things that we might not get, there is no reason to be dismissive of a warning. We can't be all knowledgeable of every form of racism and offenses taken towards minorities, but we can respect that if there is a warning, it's for a reason, even if we don't see it. It costs zero to be respectful.

But it costs alot to go to Disney/get AP/Genie/Hotels/Food/transport from airport/galactic hotel /Magic Band, etc, etc

Just because I don’t agree with something doesn’t mean I am not respectful of others views. People can have any views they want I could care less. Doesn’t mean I have to overtly agree with it. If I did it would make me a liar. We can go down a rabbit hole of topics that you would not agree with and I am passionate about but you wouldn’t find me dying on a message board hill about. I love all people no matter what they bring to the table but I can disagree with any issue I want. I am not violent or out protesting it in public I just agree with it. I don’t agree with SM going away but I still throw my money at a company I don’t agree with.

I get what you're saying, but also it's possible that sometimes we're overcorrecting. Sure, the warning doens't really matter or hurt anything, but if even I'm wondering why it's there, it does make me wonder if anyone was ever really offended at all in a real-world scenario. It's like there's someone deciding for us and it's a little counterproductive if you ask me.

And the fact it is on some stuff and not all? Why not make it for all? I am fine with the warning. Acknowledge your wrongs. But erase it completely? How do we ever learn? Sure Song of the South came at a different time in our history and not a proud moment in Disney history. But do we close all the attractions that have the disclaimer in front of it? Magic Carpets, Peter Pan etc.

I do not agree. In a real-world scenario you cannot hope to know every single thing that has ever been used against minorities. It is impossible. Which is why media like books for example use sensitivity readers. It is not for me, a Latin American woman to decide the nuances of what other minorities find offensive. In the same way it is not for you to decide for me how racism has affected my life as a Latin American woman. It is not counterproductive for there to be warnings if you ask me.

What is the hurt in having a warning of something that does hurt others?

Knowing how racist the depiction of Native Americans is on Peter Pan has helped me recognize it in other media for example.

Those are valid questions. I think the issue is that we feel like we have to do something, which is fair - these things need to be addressed and we need to do better. I totally understand why certian things are offensive and I don't think they should be highlighted in the parks. I am generally fine with the Splash chnges no matter the reason, as long as the end result is great. A lot of this stuff just goes by "feeling" and that's hard to quantify. Why is Song of the South worse than Peter Pan? I don't know that I could tell you why, but it is.

I do understand, and there is certainly no hurt in having the warnings, but they are in fact applied unevenly and that is an issue. What about things that don't have it, but should? Should everything. If you ask me, the Disney/Marvel produced X-Men comic books should carry the warnings - but nobody seems to care that they are offensive to me. It's all so arbitrary. It's fine though. If people find value in it, let them. It won't prevent me from watching anything though, and I am sometimes befuddled about why.
