Agree 100% with everything you said!I don’t mind ArriveCAN but I can see how it would be onerous for those without access to a smart phone. I’ll still use it but think it’s good they are making it optional. I’m more happy that the random testing will be abolished. It seemed even more complicated when they moved testing out of the airports. Glad I won’t have to deal with that potential hassle.
I'm really not sure why anyone would continue to use it when it becomes 'optional'. What would be the point?I have not found ArriveCAN to be a problem at all the few times we have used it. We usually drive across the border so will likely continue to use it.
You can do your customs declaration on the ArriveCAN app which I did enjoy having done before we landed. For us it did speed up the customs process.I'm really not sure why anyone would continue to use it when it becomes 'optional'. What would be the point?
We are traveling at the end of this month (returning Oct 7th) I probably will still fill in the app just because it might simplify things over those first few days of the changes. I will try to follow the news here while I'm away to see what is happening with those coming into Canada.
Well I've used it 6X this year and it never included the declaration. There is the Edeclaration app but that is only for certain airports and YYZ is no longer one of them. You can do your customs declaration on the ArriveCAN app which I did enjoy having done before we landed. Didn’t you always fill out your form on the plane before landing? You can do your customs declaration on the ArriveCAN app which I did enjoy having done before we landed. For us it did speed up the customs process.

We flew internationally 4 times while the app was required. At YYC you still needed to scan the app at a kiosk (same as with the paper forms) and get a slip to present to the Customs officer. I don’t remember it saving any time at all upon Re-entry. But by far the most onerous part was having it done and reviewed by the airline at check-in. Those lines were chaos with so many people not having the app correctly done and ready to go.
I, for one, am thrilled it’s being dropped and there’s not a snowball’s chance I’ll use it voluntarily.
For sure we didn't get forms since ArriveCan has been in place, but even having it done doesn't circumvent the stop at the kiosks and then into the line to see an agent.I've not seem forms handed out in years. Maybe it depends on the airport? YYZ is all kiosks now (NEXUS or not).
I lie - once in the last couple of years they did hand out forms (in the airport, not on the plane) because the kiosks were down.

I stand corrected, they merged the appswe did too
Until a formal announcement is made, which they said will be coming over the next week, we really know nothing. As I previously said I return to Canada the first week of October so I will probably do the app just to, hopefully, keep things smooth for my arrival. There could be a few bumps in that first few days.Okay, so we now know it's voluntary. What will be the benefit of doing it? I have it on my phone but is it going to actually make a difference now that it's not mandated? I'm very confused with what it will or will not do. I can easily complete it but will it make a difference when we land in Toronto or not?
Again, very confused with it all.
My own experiences this year have really no different than in the past at YYZ. It has always been busy and there has always been a line. The only exception was a flight in January that we were held on the plane at the gate for maybe 15-20 minutes.I'm happy it's going away (or becoming optional) so it might speed up the customs lines, which have been atrocious the last few months.
