Is your province adopting Nation Truth & Reconciliation Day?

I'm not sure which businesses will be closed here in BC (case in point, I have no idea what UPS is doing so don't know if hubby will be off or not) but I know schools WILL be closed that day.

*editing to add that DH just found out UPSer's WILL get it off as a paid holiday. There is a clause in their contract that states they get a paid day off for every federal government holiday regardless of whether it's been added to the current contract or not.

I think my sister said that her company is Federally regulated in Ontario so she will get the holiday off. She is thinking of also taking the Friday off and making it a really long weekend.

I'm in BC and our company just had a big meeting to discuss this. We work with a large number of Indigenous groups but a fair bit of our client base is not. We decided to go down to a skeleton crew on the 30th and are asking for volunteers to work that day. Anyone who works it will get a day off in lieu.

I live in such a small bubble I had to look up to see what this was all about. I hadn't even heard of it. Of course I'm retired so it doesn't really affect me. DS will have the day off I guess as he works for the Federal government.

Thanks for the heads up.

In BC as well. My company was originally going to open for the morning, followed by a company-wide meeting but in response to feedback we are now closing for the day except for a small staff to support the call center. We'll be meeting with members of local indigenous communities in the morning and then breaking into our regular teams to discuss. DH works for a federally regulated company and they will be closed that day.

My understanding is that it's a Federal stat, so I get it off (and yes, this year a lot of people also are taking the Friday off). I believe schools will still be going on though, much like they do on Remembrance Day here. I am not sure what they will be able to do here for it as the board (Ottawa Catholic) has said no assemblies in September.

No official edict from the province. My company is taking it this year only since there really hasn’t been time to think through a permanent policy. We have branches in 5 provinces and some business units are subject to federal regulation and some not. Personally, I think having a day off for people to shop or watch Netflix is shameful. It does nothing to truly honour our First Nations - either past or present - nor does it produce one drop of clean water on desperate reserves.

NS is Sept 30 beginning this year.

Provincial Govt, public schools and regulated child care will be closed. Businesses will have the choice, as they do on other occasions, to remain open.

In AB it's a no for this year as school calendar's etc have been made but I believe we will get it off next year.
That's interesting because our school calendar for 2021-2022 has been out for more than a year and we're still getting the day off.

Slightly off topic but I’m disappointed that it’s only for federal workers. I never understood why Remembrance Day is only for federal workers either. It’s very unfair some people get a paid day off and others don’t.
