What item of clothing would you love but can never find?

A really nice suit.

FWIW, you don't find a really nice suit; you create one. You buy the best suit that you can afford that is just a wee bit large for you, and you take it to a tailor to get the right fit. There is absolutely no substitute for good 100% wool; look for good fabric and let the tailor do the rest. Prior to the pandemic my DH wore suits to work every day; he buys from places that do closeouts and always has them tailored for a perfect fit.

A dressy dress with 3/4 sleeves, modest neckline (scoop or "v"), knee length, A-line or slight fit-and-flare. No glitter, jewels or lace. Solid color but not black. Sounds simple but does not exist.

I just googled around and found at least a dozen dresses that fit that description. Are you looking for an odd size? Nordstrom alone has at least 4 on their website. Magellans has a jersey travel dress version in royal blue, purple and navy.

You must try Marni and COS. For a petite version, try See By Chloé.

Thanks. I need a 6P, depending on cut can sometimes make do with Missy 6 and good tailor. I've stalked Nordstrom, Dillards, Lord and Taylor and Macy's websites for months. Not sure how you got 4 at Nordstrom, I got only one, a powder blue Eliza J. I'm not familiar with Magellan's, googled it and got a sporting goods store.
Being petite (and slightly curvy) is tough, I learned a long time ago that sleek, simple styles flattered me more than poofy, flowey tons of fabric and big patterns. I also like a bit more modest that current styles seem to be. Designers ignore us as they want tall skinny clothes hangers to show off their designs. I can occasionally find something at Talbots but they don't have much dressy anymore.

Thanks, not familiar with either of them but googled both. Marni seems to be lots of huge prints and COS seems to be lots of big oversized dresses. Neither works well on a petite frame. Just want a simple, solid, well-fitting dress.

A bra with super wide "straps." I have permanent furrows in my shoulders after 40-something years of wearing a bra in which all of the weight is concentrated in an area that's less than an inch wide.
Yes - a bra. The perfect bra is as elusive as just the right shade of foundation - I’ve got many of each at the back of the drawer that seems right when I bought them but aren’t. :(

Jeans for women in standard sizes that are actually the size stated so I don't have to try on a thousand pairs of the same size to find the one that actually fits me. Women's clothing sizes are all over the place.
Sometimes even within one brand. I found a cute pair of Sonoma brand denim shorts at a thrift store. I liked them so much, I bought two more (different shades of denim) on Poshmark. Same style, same size. One fits, one is huge on me. Super frustrating. I have just about given up buying clothes online anymore.

Petite does make a difference, true enough. Magellan's is a travel outfitter. https://www.magellans.com/Default.aspx Among other things, they carry knit dresses suitable for work travel wear, which makes them not casual, but perhaps not up for a wedding unless you add a spiffy scarf. They don't do petites in their dresses, though they do in separates.

As for Nordstrom, you did not specify that the sleeves had to be cut completely straight, so along with the powder blue, there is also the pink scalloped Tahari, the Magenta Eliza J with pleated sleeves, and the hot pink Harper Rose.

The trick with looking for such a dress at retail right now is that it is generally not a popular summer style at the present time, but they will be findable 4 months from now.

I will say that any dressmaker worth her salt could make one for you very easily, because the style you are looking for is essentially a standard "sloper" -- the master patterns that dressmakers use for fitting. These are slopers: https://www.etsy.com/market/basic_fitting_shell
If you really want that style it would be worth it to have the same dress made in both a summer and winter weight fabric.

Thank you for the information. The other dresses are sheaths, not A-line or fit and flare. If I size up for a sheath to feel comfortable around my hips, the top looks sloppy. I actually like the Tahari floral fit and flare but I don't do big florals. I used to make all my own dresses, skirts, etc. But I'm sort of past that now. I may have many of those patterns in my basement. Maybe I'll look for a seamstress.
Are you in the clothing design business? I'd love to know why petites and ladies of a certain age are practically ignored.
