Self Checkout

I went to Target yesterday. The self checkout aisles have more than doubled since last year.

What are you seeing by you?

For the Target closest to me same amount of self checkout lines as before and still as slow as ever.

At Target I think there are the same amount of self-checkouts as there were before covid.
8, 4 on each side of a wide aisle. There are usually only one or two full checkouts in service, out of maybe 10.

Walmart increased the number of selfs someone early last autumn.

The supermarkets I frequent are the same.

Giant added at least 4-6 more about 6 months ago. Didn’t notice anymore added in other stores.

Costco near me is the same as it's been for several years. But with Covid, Costco employees actually scan everything for you at the self check-out. I always use self check-out, even when I scan the items myself and have a lot of stuff. So much easier and quicker.

I don't usually shop at Winn-Dixie, but I noticed our local store has also added self-checkout. I also read somewhere that some McDonalds restaurants are going totally self-ordering -- no employees taking orders.

Our Target has 3. And it's the slowest moving line in the store despite having 3 registers whereas every other line only has one.

Depends on the location. We live near two reasonably large Target stores, and they've had just four each over the past few years and haven't expanded.

There's one Target Express fairly near my home, and that's pretty much all self-checkout, but with one customer service counter where they can operate as a manned checkout. Also a really different target. They're not designated as a "City Target" or a Target Express, but it's smaller than most Target stores. Their setup is different. Two self-checkouts near one exit and often without an employee present, although there's a security guard station. Then it's several self-checkout next to the customer service desk. I'll usually go there if I need to get a price match.

The Target closest to me has 5 self-checkouts--been that way for about 2 years. Other Targets seem to have more than that based on the their front-of-store configuration.

Target is the same as it has been and they are extremely slow. The Walmart Neighborhood Market near me has completely done away with any cashiers. It's ALL self checkout now, not even a normal cashier register left for them to open.

Giant added at least 4-6 more about 6 months ago. Didn’t notice anymore added in other stores.
Realized you asked about Target. I have 2 that are close to my house. I don’t think they’ve changed recently but they both have quite a few self checkout.

The Walmart Neighborhood Market near my office has gone to almost exclusively self-checkout. They still have one cashier in the middle of the self-checkout area that can check you out if you wish, but otherwise, it's all self-checkout.

Haven't seen Target change yet (they already had about 12-16 depending on size of store) but Walmarts are almost all self service. They have one, sometimes two registers open with a cashier. Our Kroger hasn't added any more self serve but they have shut down most the cashier lines. I think my Home Depot is almost all self serve but the employees who oversee them jump in to help pretty quickly if you need it. Honestly .... I'm getting out of the stores much quicker doing it myself.

Haven’t been to a Target store recently, but the nearby Walmart, BJ’s and Costco have all expanded their self-checkout areas.

Self checkout at my Target is the same size as it was last year. I cannot emphasize enough how well Target handles the drive-up orders. It is by far the easiest place to order from online and the wait is extremely minimal once I pull up into the pickup lane. Just when I thought self-checkout was the greatest thing they go and do drive-up.

mine has 8 now, up from 4 and its the most glorious thing ever. There was always only 1 registered opened and it was god awful. when presented with the option, I choose self check out every time.

I refuse to use self checkout. I have no idea whether they've grown or stayed the same because I will not use them and really don't pay that much attention to them.

I am curious as to why you pointedly refuse to use them... do they take too long? you’re bad at using them? don’t like that they might result in cutting cashiers?

I personally LOVE self-check out. I’m usually MUCH faster than any cashier and I can bag my things exactly how I want them. Walmart is particularly good for this - I’ve had the “helper” at the self-checkout area bring me a second cart so that I can unload, scan, bag, and deposit into the empty cart. So much easier than trying to shove it all onto the “sold” area or keeping things separated in a single cart, if you have a lot.

I will say that the Shaws supermarket around here has the WORST self-checkout lines, and it is entirely because of the too-touchy “sold” area which will often miss that you’ve put something down into it so it keeps telling you to “place item in bagging area”, etc., and eventually will stop working and require an override. I only use those if I have just a couple of things.
