Hulu or YouTube tv

Did YouTube tv just go up in price? I can't find the thread from a few months ago discussing the increase in monthly price for Hulu tv. I had just signed up for it and the price increased by 25% or near. The discussion was to switch to YouTube tv. I don't watch any Hulu original content so that's not a factor. I just went to switch to YouTube and see that it is only $5 cheaper per month. What did you guys do?

I have had YouTube TV it since Dec and have been paying $49.99 a month. Hulu has gone from $39.99 a month to $54.00 a month since Jan 2019. To me YTTV was a better deal over all when I factored in price, the number of devices you can watch it on at once, and the unlimited DVR space (you can save recordings for 9 months). My plan is to buy a Google GC at Target with the Red Card to save 5% a month, figure every little bit helps You can do the same with a Hulu GC.

My wife and I lucked out because we got AT&T Now when it was cheaper and our rate was grandfathered in ($40 per month) before it jumped in price to $65 per month with more stations. So we run that along with Philo ($20 per month) to supplement the channels AT&T doesn't give us.

Does YouTube TV use a separate app or do you interface the TV portion through the regular YouTube app? And does YouTube TV carry any of the special stations like HBO, Showtime, Starz, etc?

I had the cheap AT&T Now with the grandfathered lineup that nobody can get now, but the price has steadily increased up past $70 a month now. I think the original rate is no longer grandfathered. Every time I look around to see if there is something better there is always one channel that I want that one of the other providers doesn't have. So I have stuck with AT&T for now. The funny thing is Xfinity now offers a cheap streaming option with more channels, but their streaming app is not natively supported by the Amazon Fire TV that I have on all my TVs.

I dropped Hulu Live and picked up Sling with one of the options (blue or orange). I also subscribe to Prime Video and will pick up Netflix or Hulu per month as needed to watch some shows. We love the price and options that Sling offers.

Does Sling include ABC/NBC/CBS? I need at least one station for local news and weather.

We have those channels and our local news channel, but we have access to them through free basic cable (“rabbit ears”) in our area not sling. I’m not sure how that was set up, but we didn’t need anything special to do it- no extra wires or subscriptions.

We have Hulu as part of our Sprint cell phone package. Didn't know they offered TV as well for an additional cost. If it goes thru your internet connection do you experience buffering while watching live TV?

Exact package I have - I have the ESPN Sling, watch my network shows online the day after or on regular Hulu, and have DC Universe, Disney +, Netflix, and Amazon for streaming. Total cost at my best discount was $20 (3 month discount) + $1.99 (12 month discount) + $4.99 (12 month discount) + $4.99/month + $0 (TMobile pays) + $0 (Veteran Prime that I pay for shipping) for $31.97/month so far this year...it will be $46.97 after March, and then in November, I have to decide to drop Disney or DC b/c I won't pay both full price (DC is probably on the way out)...I'm still on the fence with Hulu b/c NBC will have the free app and CW already does, but I guess I'll see in Nov what they offer me to stay...I know if Amazon ever increases the Prime price past my shipping needs, I'd drop (I had Prime dropped for a year before I picked it back up with the Vet discount)...same for Netflix - if TMobile drops them, I'd drop...

I needed ESPN, FoodTV, and GameShow Network when I cut the cord over Xmas...and didn't want any news networks...unfortunately, I still pay for 1-2 of those, but I did get the 3 channels I wanted:)...

What is great about all these options is that you can try them out, usually at a discounted rate, to see if they work for you. We had Hulu Live and enjoyed it, but it was missing Hallmark channel. Around October, when we were starting to think about Holiday shows, I found the Sling packages and tried them out. They offered a package that covers Golf and all the discovery shows for my Hubby and Hallmark/HGTV/Project Runway shows for me. There are specific shows that I watch on Hulu, so when they come out, I’ll restart that membership at that time for a month or two. For the price- you can’t beat it. I pay $45 for our sling package, which is significantly less than the price we’d pay with cable that included sports. It’s less than Hulu Live and includes some channels Live did not, plus we get some space to record shows we’ve missed.

I’ve always wondered if I’ve gotten my money’s worth with Prime, but I’m using them more and more to purchase things- especially subscriptions that give discounts (pet food and vitamins). I also use their music service which is an addition $7 a month, and often find myself using both the video and music services in school where I teach- to show a Magellan video or to play some background music, like yesterday morning during first period lab when we were all sleepy and needed some motivation. If they increase their price, which they likely will at some point... I don’t know. Depends on how much I suppose.

I'm not sure about Sling, but YTTV has local stations. In the Boston area we get 11 local over the air stationson YTTV

Go to
https://tv.youtube.com/welcome/?utm_source=pm&utm_medium=gs&utm_campaign=1006175
Scroll down just a little bit and enter your Zip Code and it will list all the stations you will get for free.

The stations listed under with the "Additional Networks" banner are not included in the base price but as add on's. I'm not sure what YTTV charges for them but I know some of them are available on there own so be suire to compare prices of getting them on your own or with YTTV

Thanks. We're in the Boston area as well. Im just trying to decide if its worth it to switch from Hulu to YTTV for $5 a month. Probably is :)

We recently cut the cord and get our local channels through an indoor flat antenna. One time cost of $17.50. We picked up Fox, NBC, & CBS, but not ABC.

This one:

Use this to check your distance to a broadcast tower.

We actually just use regular Hulu, along with Netflix, Amazon & Disney+. We are getting along so far without having a live TV package.

There is one show my husband liked that we aren’t getting but it actually makes more sense to just buy the season on Vudu for $20 than get a live tv package to watch it.

I didn’t notice an issue with buffering- tv or internet. We upgraded our internet service a few years ago and have a decent high speed service. If you have buffering issues perhaps check your internet service and speed.

You want to be sure you are getting at least 20Mbps download speed from your provider. It is approximately 5-7Mbps just for one HD stream. So if you have other streamers or other users of your Internet you will want some more capacity. I get Internet from Xfinity and sometimes the bandwidth drops to 3-5 Mbps and at that point live streaming will start buffering.

No buffering here at all. In my town we had the option of 3 cable TV providers, ComCrap, FIOS, and my town's electric company. My towns electric company strung fiber optic over 20 years ago and began by offering high speed internet and eventually cable TV and phone. I used my towns electric company for it an to do the upgrades they needed to do was going to be too expensive so they decided to sto offering cable TV which forced me to make the decision of changing providers or streaming. I decided to stream. We originally had 50Mbps when we still had cable. and when we got rid of cable they suggested we upgrade to 100Mbps which they said was good for 6 to 8 devices (things such as TV's, cell phones on wifi, smart thermostats, tablets, computers, etc). We now have 100Mbps and it's great. Even at 50 we never noticed any buffering but we also had less devices on it.

I manage buffer bloat on my router. This is a knob that a lot of home users aren't tweaking. I also avoided cable modems with the Intel Puma chipset, which has problems. Finally, I run my own DNS cache server locally. These all give me a very speedy Internet.

Personally, if cost was an issue I would drop down to standard Hulu for $6/month.

There are very few things that I (personally) watch that I can't on standard Hulu. CBS shows being the only thing. And I wasn't really watching anything on CBS.

Sling is running at $5 promo. I signed back up for a month. I'll most likely cancel again next month.
