The Running Thread - 2019

Hi all, been a bit absent due to school camp with my 10yo daughter, has a blast but am soooooo tired! Also my ankle injury isn’t getting better so need to get to s physio (haven’t run for 2 weeks)

Anyway some A’s to Q’s of the D

Daylight savings ends in 3 weeks for us, I’m usually ready for it to end as I don’t like dark mornings.

SWGE I had been sitting smugly with a pre opening WDW visit late September early Oct followed by 2 days at DLR on the way home specifically for SWGE. Now what was looking like reasonable crowds at WDW is likely to be packed. We were expecting DLR to be packed. Oh well, plans can’t be changed, just need to reset expectations.

Not sure about that beer...

99.9% of the time, I agree wholeheartedly! However, it turns out that at mile 25ish of the WDW Marathon, on an extremely (for the season) hot day, when my gut has been angry since mile 16, a Bud Light is the most amazing, life-improving thing around. I have no explanation; I only know it to be true. Look away - I'm hideous! :rotfl:

I'll give you a pass on that one! I will also eat or drink anything put in front of me in the late miles of a marathon. :rotfl:

Well March madness just went down the drain for me. I realize Will Wade may have been in a bad spot, but why give in now? Just go all in and deal with the ban thats going to come regardless. I'm so tired of our spineless AD. If AU and Cam Newton can get away with some shady stuff, we could have too.

NOTE: I am also somewhat aware that a lot of folks on this thread have no idea what I am whining about, but I just need to complain.

Over the next year or two there will be a lot of changes/suspensions/firings in College Basketball.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Welcome to the college basketball misery club.

Of course you are in the P5 so you will bounce back like the other P5 schools have. Meanwhile, we lost scholarships and got banned for a year for falling below some ridiculous APR calculation but UNC allows (and admits) that their players took fake classes and do not even get a slap on the wrist. It will take you a long time get to the level of bitterness that I am at...believe me.

Meanwhile Sean Miller lands one of the top recruiting classes in the country for 2019-2020. Clearly people are thinking all this is no big deal and will have no impact. What happens to Arizona will really indicate if other schools will start taking all the investigations seriously.

I have a feeling he won't be coaching much longer.

ATTQOTD: I love Star Wars so I can't wait for the opening in theory, but am terrified of the crowds. That said, my friends want to do Princess 2020 so I guess that's the first post GE opening visit. Whether we can get anywhere near it remains to be seen...

QOTD: Not running related, but after the big news was released... When are you going to go see Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studious?!?!?!?!

ATTQOTD: Best case at this moment is June 2020.
Marathon Weekend 2020 and again for Star Wars Rival Run 2020.

Interesting that they're opening Galaxy's Edge in phases. I wouldn't go until it was fully open but I'm thinking maybe next Spring or Fall? January if I give in to the FOMO and end up there for marathon weekend.
Give yourself to the Dark Side.

Or

Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.

Unclear at the moment, TBH.
I was once very convinced that I would first experience Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland this summer. But with the phased opening, I don't want to spend the money for a partial experience. Now factor in two Disney World race weekends next year and it's possible that I will not see Galaxy's Edge at all until Marathon Weekend 2020. But I will see it then.

ATTQOTD: I’m local to WDW and I have no clue when I’ll see it. I have no desire to stand in line for hours on end. My feet hurt and back hurt just thinking about it.
Good thing my brain has plenty of practice telling my feet, legs, and back to deal with it during the marathon this year. Because my brain is insanely excited. My sister and I concluded that I am more excited for Galaxy's Edge than her 16 month old nephew was excited to meet Lightning McQueen. And he bounced up and down in my arms making car noises when he realized he was in line to see Lightning McQueen.

Would like to go during a RunDisney event so either a W & D weekend or perhaps when Disneyland has running events again. Is that still in the works ?
I hope so. I'm really hoping to run through Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland in January 2021 for the return of the Star Wars Half Marathon The Light Side. But that's me hoping.

The question is who is interested in trying one out?
ATTQOTD: No alcohol for me.

I don’t drink alcohol so I’m out. It would have to be 26.2 Diet Mountain Dew for me.
Now a 262. Mountain Dew I would certainly try.

I’m committing myself to the 2020 WDW marathon and I’m shopping around for the right training program. Does anyone have any suggestions for marathon training programs I should look into? Ideally I’d love to be able to download an app on my phone to keep track of the daily workouts.
Whatever you decide, I think being completely committed to your plan is the biggest key. Yes, you will miss days, but when you are committed to your plan, those missed days don't cause too much damage.

ATTQOTD: We have an awesome beer store in my (college) town, I wonder if they will have it. I might have to look for this next time I am in there.
I'm an alum of BYU, which recently celebrated being named the #1 Stone Cold Sober School in America for the 21st consecutive year. How does BYU celebrate that? The BYU Creamery released a special mint brownie chocolate milk flavor. The mint brownies at BYU are very beloved.

There's a lot of options for different plans out there and the best thing is really to look at the options and see what fits your schedule and lifestyle the best.
Ultimately, I think this is the best answer as to which plan someone should choose for any given race. I've learned that there are so many different training plans that will lead a runner to success, but you need to choose the one that truly works best for you. I've used different plans over the years. The plan I used for many years helped me finish many a race and ultimately helped me truly enjoy running, but for the marathon, I tried something new and different that worked perfectly for me. But I also note that I never would have tried a different plan had I not learned so much from the Galloway plans that I followed for years.

Looking for some advice from you running experts!

This is your first full marathon? I think the most important thing is that it fits into your schedule and you are consistent in your workouts. There is someone around here that may have an opinion too. He’s done a lot of research on the topic.

ATTQOTD: I'm half contemplating doing Wine&Dine half this year - it would be my first runDisney event in the US - but am now getting a bit scared of how nuts the crowds might be!

On a somewhat related note - if you had to choose between doing the Wine&Dine half (as a first US runDisney event, and probably fitting in MNSSHP and the first MVMCP) and going for Christmas season (and seeing all the gingerbread displays, going for MVMCP, going for Epcot Festival of the Holidays) - which would you choose? As that's my two choices I'm thinking of right now!

What is more of a ‘must do’ for you: the half marathon or the holiday festival? Or, if you are struggling between the two, which will you regret not doing the most?

The crowds for Star Wars will be no different in December than they will be in early November, and might possibly be worse as schools let out for Winter Break. Do not let the crowd issue dictate what you chose to do.

Is Johnson's still there? Near the corner of 301 and Fair Ave.? That was the popular spot when I graduated!

I’m sure if my husband’s store gets the 26.2 beer, it will find a way into our fridge: I mean, Mmmhops showed up today at home as he knows of my love of Hanson.

As far as a 26.2 cocktail - I imagine it would be something that feels light and refreshing like a spritz like a mic of aperol, Prosecco and lavender lemonade. I just asked my husband want type of cocktail he would want and he said a chocolate martini or a mimosa.

Mmmmmprobably Marathon Weekend 2020, since I'm definitely going then. If it's a two person trip with my housemate we may skip it if it's a complete madhouse since she's got a whole lot of WDW to see on her first trip and missing one land would probably be a better move than missing a bunch of time in all the other lands she hasn't seen. If it's just me I'll brave RD or a long wait in a holding pen or whatever it takes to go in at least once. Star Wars isn't one of my big passion fandoms, but I grew up with it and I'm excited about the immersive qualities of the land and rides as it's been marketed.

I'm already tentatively planning two trip for 2021 (embrace the madness); if I do that it'll be Dopey the first round (so...running and sleeping) and then hitting all the new stuff on round two later that year, jumping in on whatever celebrations they've got going for the 50th, etc.

Or I could skip the 50th and go to Tokyo Disneyland instead, come back to Florida in 2022 or 2023. Dunno yet.

It's been awhile, but just checking in...

I did a 5k last weekend (bleh). I forced myself to do it as a way to practice some speed and make myself be uncomfortable. I finished 5th (last year I was 3rd, 3 years ago I won). Weather was nice, it was just me. My back continues to be a nuisance, but even it wasn't totally horrible (some days it is). I think I just gave up mentally in that last mile. I have my PR on this course, 18:50 (although I ran 18:47 in the middle of a 10k this past July--don't really count that one).

02 - Wendy98 - Bockfest 5k (NA / 20:04)

As a Beer Series race, it is a guaranteed good time though! Where else can you see the crowning of the sausage king and queen?

Nice Bockfest beer at 10:30 am:

This weekend I have:

10 - Wendy98 - Heart Mini Half Marathon (NA / N/A)

I will probably treat this as a harder training run. Besides my aching back, my hamstrings/glutes continue to be super tight. I am afraid to push full throttle for that long.

And more importantly, SWGE! I am going to DL in July. This wasn't my idea, but dh really wants to see GE. I am not sure when I will be back to WDW (which is shocking!). I am going to WDW next week and then in May/June, before and after our cruise. That will be my 7th trip on this AP. I had planned to take a break. We have gone the week leading up to Thanksgiving the past 2 years, but didn't book anything yet. We didn't want to go if GE wasn't open--and that's how we ended up planning DL. I do have a reservation over marathon weekend, but too early to decide.

Thanks for replying! It's hard to say! I think I'm tempted to want to do the holiday season as it's the one season I haven't yet properly done at Disney World! But I went for the holiday season at Disneyland last year during the week after Thanksgiving and got a bit holiday-ed out from that. But at the same time I really want to do the half marathon as it looks so fun to do a Disney race in Disney World, and I'm actually at a point this year where I can realistically manage to do a 5K/10K/half again.

I figure I have another week to decide before having to sign up for the W&D races... Feels so odd to be planning a Disney holiday months in advance (I usually book a couple of months before going)!
