I love credit cards so much!

The new SW credit card is live, Southwest Priority. IMO sign up bonus is just ok, but if you fly Southwest every year it doesn't seem like a bad move. 7500 anniversary points plus $75 SW credit (and more) for $149. I saw it first from DoC:

https://www.doctorofcredit.com/chase-southwest-priority-credit-card-149-annual-fee-full-details/

It's a split sign up bonus, so I'm not sure 25k in RR points is worth 15k in spend. But someone with good maths I'm sure will set me right :)
Wow I guess we will not getting that card for the CP!

well thats lackluster

I was just wondering if I could take my home insurance out of escrow and pay it myself, with a CC of course.

The statement came and I went over and paid it. My insurance agent is State Farm and they are right around the corner from me, about 3 minutes. She said, you need to call (my mortgage holder) and I said will do when I get home. She said 'okay' as it's not due until September. Escrow gets resolved in November. I didn't call. I figure I'll get a refund on my escrow in November. I'm not recommending anyone mess with their escrow account as I won't know what havoc I've created until it all washes out. I'm also way beyond the point where I have to do an escrow account, so not particularly worried.

It seems to me that SW is making it harder to earn CP.

The Plus and Premier have been stuck at 40k for a while now, so double dipping won’t get you to 110k, and even pairing one of these with the Biz only gets you to 100k plus whatever points you earn from MSR, or otherwise just a bit short. We can hope for an elevated bonus, but who knows? Or maybe take a Southwest flight to sign up for a 50k offer on the Plus or Premier card, then double dip the Priority on the same day when you land (still won’t get you to 110k without more spend), or sign up for the Biz a month later (if you’re still under 5/24)?

The new Priority card is essentially a 40k signup bonus for most CP chasers who don’t have big expenses or the ability to MS that additional $15k. The big reason being the 110k has to be earned in the same year. But putting in a tiered bonus structure where the additional 25k that’ll get you to CP, when paired with another consumer or biz card, puts a significant obstacle in getting those additional 25k to post in the same year as the 40k (Plus/Premier) + 40k (Priority) or 60k (Biz) + 40k (Priority) signup bonuses — that is, $15k spend. That’s what, 6-8 months or more of spend for most households? So timing all bonuses to post in the same year, and ideally early in the year to extend the life of the CP is going to be a real challenge.

Regarding the new SW card - I actually think it is pretty good if one can meet the spend easily. Might have DH apply at some point, but not until we have all the UA Mileage Plus points we need.

Pretty sure my IHG free night went right back into my account when I cancelled my free night reservation.
24 hours and nothing back yet.... I'm going to try calling even tho it's Dh acct....(thanks for the DP!)

Hi! I am new to this thread and to using credit cards for air miles. I have read through several pages and had several questions answered already, but wanted to ask a couple more (probably stupid) questions.

I plan to travel next summer, but I do not know which airline, so I am looking at non-airline cards like the Barclaycard Arrival and the Capital One Venture. I have not applied for any cards in at least the last couple years, so if I understand the "5/24" guidance, I can apply for two. Is that a good idea?

It would normally be tough to rack up enough charges in 3 months for both cards to get the mileage bonuses, but I was thinking I could use them for my mortgage and other bills that I currently pay direct. Is that a good idea?

Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I don't know of any credit cards that you can pay your mortgage with. Definitely works to pay other bills that accept credit cards such as insurance, cable, cell phones. My utilities (electric and gas) don't take credit without a fee.

Another option is to take a look at the Chase Sapphire preferred or reserve. Those miles can also be used on various airlines either as a transfer or to book through their travel portal. Those sign up bonuses are worth over $500.

The 5/24 rule applies to Chase cards. If you are interested in any of Chase's cards, apply for those while you are under 5/24. If you apply for other cards such as Capital one, those will count towards your */24 count.

WhooHoo y'all! SW points finally posted!! Calling SW tomorrow for a retention offer, or I will close the card. Never called and asked for a retention offer before so I'm a bit nervous :scared:

Mine posted too! Finally! Need to call and get canceling as well, unless they make me an offer I can't refuse...

I swear to you that I didn't know your name began with A and I've been reading your screen name as "Am Alone" for all this time. I'm glad you aren't alone! :goodvibes

Same here! I have always read her screen name that way and I'm not sure why I just assumed that's how it was meant to be read. :confused3 Glad to know I'm not alone in that.

Thank you for the suggestions! I’m considering DAH. It’s the Saturday we are there and since SO and I are APs it’s only $89pp. EMM is out. My sister sleeps in and I’ll probably have to fight her to be out of bed by noon on our trip lol.

We are doing DAH for the first time on our adults trip at the end of next month. We actually have tickets for our arrival day. We'll be landing at MCO around 6:30, so our plan is to hurry to our hotel to drop off luggage, then head straight to MK. I can't wait!

So, I did try to search this before posting the question but the search thread function is not working for me lately...

I think I am ready to do the CSP/CSR double dip. But definitely nervous about that spend. I know somewhere there is a list of tips/tricks to hitting that spend but I can't find that info anywhere. So, any tips?

Definitely want to look at bank accounts that I can fund with a credit card. Do we have a good current list of those somewhere as well?

Also haven't exactly sold this to my dh yet. Between the high spend and annual fee, I need to make a strong case. ;)

Mastercards and Discover can be used on Plastiq to pay mortgages. But I agree that if @JaxDad is under 5/24 (0/24 at that!), he should focus on Chase cards because they offer some of the most lucrative offers and flexible and valuable points for travel. That means Visas, which is YMMV for mortgages.

So this is a new one. I posted that I did the Flights and Hotel package a few days ago with Marriott. I asked for 120,000 Alaska miles and a Category 6 certificate (300,000 Marriott points). The agent screwed up and transferred the points to United! I gave her my Alaska number so I have no idea what happened. So instead of 120,000 Alaska miles I now have 132,000 United miles. I think the miles also made me a Premier Silver for United. I figured this all out because when I went to check into my flight for Maui I was given a complimentary upgrade of extra legroom and put on the auto upgrade for first class. I can't imagine the nightmare of trying to have this corrected. Anyone heard of this before? I'd much rather have the Alaska miles, but I can just imagine the long phone calls and the potential for more screw up. We fly United enough that I can use them, but United miles are so much easier to earn. Not sure what to do.

That does sound like a future nightmare call burn I’d be calling anyhow. United miles can be earned at a pretty fast pace via UR cards and 1:1 transfers. Alaska miles cannot be earned as quickly. The options are the Alaska card and SPG card which will be extremely devalued as a miles earning card come August. This is why I picked up 4 of the nights and flights packages and transferred everything to Alaska.

For those who open bank accounts online, how do you prove your identity? Do you have to scan drivers license, SS cards, etc?

I've been asked to enter my drivers license number, done 4 bank bonuses and haven't been asked to send/scan anything in yet.

DAH is so much fun!!!! It will be perfect with adults - my teen and I had such a good time when we went. Not sure it would have worked as well with my little one - even my teen was flagging by the end (and this was in Feb so the event ended at 11), but we had been all over the park and done so much in those 3 hours. Astro Orbiter at night is awesome, great views of everything all lit up - and they let us ride over and over again because there wasn't a line. We rode the barnstormer 9 times in a row without getting off! Also hit the headliners, but some of the best times were on the less popular rides where we had the place to ourselves. I'd do that event again in a heartbeat.

There’s no such thing as nosy around here :) I think we are all very happy to answer any questions about what we are doing or our strategy to help each other.

I didn’t want to cancel either of my SW cards. Sometimes I can get referrals (either here or from friends/family) so if I cancel that won’t happen anymore. My goal was to get both fees waived and keep the anniv. points. I got the Premier waived a couple months ago (on my 3rd or 4th try I think) but now was striking out on the Plus thus far.

The AF should hit on the first of a month and you can still cancel up to 30 days after and get it refunded. I just keep trying once a week until my 30 days are up, LOL!

I wanted to use you as a referral when I apply for a CSR as you have helped me, but I didn't see a link to do that. Any advice?

I agree with the advice @Psychodisney gave you - look at the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve. When I started with this hobby I started with the Preferred. Both are good cards, but the Reserve is better and comes with a higher Annual Fee which is my main reason for sticking with the Preferred. As @Psychodisney said, both offer great, versatile travel benefits.

The 5/24 ruse applies to Chase cards. So the general piece of advice you will find here is that if you want Chase cards, get them first.

@calypso726 how long did it take before the Alaska miles were deposited into your account? I just redeemed a package yesterday, so just mindlessly waiting lol
