Hurricane Irma?

Is it just me or does it look like it is moving a little more to the west every few hours or so?

Yes it is and I have family near Naples and Sarasota and I agree with a pp they didn't evacuate as much so I am worried for them. I also have family in the Orlando area and with them being on the East side of the storm is not good news since that is the worse side to be on. I will continue to keep all residents (humans and animals) in my thoughts. I hope everyone there stays safe.

Why would they keep people in their rooms 48 hours? I assume you're only kept in your room during the actual storm.

After the storm expect a clean-up period, chainsaws chippers...

Forty-eight hours seems long, maybe it's the time it takes to get employees back to work? These things go on a good day, twenty-four hours. There are usually breaks between the bands. Stick your head out, don't wander far during the lull. There is going to be a howling, relentless wind.

If you are good at reading the local radar you can time your breaks.

Thank goodness for the DIS. About 10 minutes after we cancelled our trip yesterday I posted on FB that we had cancelled and we were sad, along with a picture of me making a sad face. DH and I were very disappointed...and then about 5 minutes after I posted, my own sister texted me and gave me grief for posting and pleaded with me to delete the post. Told me I was being insensitive to those who would be affected by the hurricane. Apparently I was not even allowed to lick my wounds for an hour...and apparently I can't multitask (feel sad for the loss of our trip and be concerned for those affected by the storm).

I KNOW people are in much worse shape than us. Heck, Texas is still suffering! I just needed to "pout" for a little bit before pulling up my big girl panties.

Facebook is seriously the worst thing that has ever happened to America.

I live in Tampa. My family has done all we can to prepare, and now it feels strange just to sit and wait. I moved all my husband's stuff into my closet so we can turn his closet into a hurricane room if necessary, since it's the only downstairs, inner, windowless room in the house. I've got tons of water, and enough Spaghettios, Cliff bars, and fruit cups to feed an army. The freezer is full of gallon jugs of water and I've got my biggest cooler clean and ready. I've made a video of the house and all our possessions for insurance purposes. We brought the pool furniture and the plants into the garage. All the laundry is done. Valuables and sentimental items are protected. I'll fill all the sinks and tubs with water Sunday evening. The cars are full of gas. I have an emergency bag packed and in the car in case we have to leave for the local shelter. Irma is not supposed to be coming for two more days and I don't know what else to do! If you think of something I forgot let me know! :-)

Of course I'm concerned for my family and my friends and neighbors, but I also feel bad for all whose Disney plans have been messed up. I know how much I treasure my vacations and I would be very upset if this happened to me. Of course people's lives and homes are more important than people's vacations, but vacations are important too.

I wish everyone at or coming to Disney the best (and safest) possible vacation under the circumstances, and for those who have had to postpone your trips, I hope it all works out for you and you eventually go and have a wonderful time. Disney is always worth the wait!

The ONLY good thing about a hurricane is the time you have to prepare. You did an awesome job! Good luck to you and stay safe.

Where are you?

Sorry, was doing laundry and just saw the 5pm track, which appears to be about halfway between us and the Gulf coast now. I don't know if that is better or worse, since that still puts us close the eye AND on the "bad" side of the storm. I am near Clermont proper (not the Clermont by Hwy 192). It's easy for me to watch on the map because I'm not too far from Lake Louisa, and the three lakes just line up in a row. Sigh! :guilty: I am so tired of the waiting and wondering. Back to the laundry - at least it's a distraction. I have my suitcases out and am doing my Disney packing to keep my mind off Irma as much as possible.

Yeah I get that but I'm thinking AKL where everything is inside

Sorry you have to deal with this. But, you sound prepared! Watching the news now seeing all the evacuations & preparations. As someone from Louisana, I really truly empathize. I know first hand how much it all sucks. Stay safe & good luck!

People are too sensitive. I would be devastated if I had to cancel. Been planning, saving and dreaming for 2 years. Haven't taken a real vacation for 2 years!!

You have every right to be upset. It doesn't mean you don't care about FL residents. Sheesh.

Again for a few hours to run errands and come back to skim through and catch up. Wow people, you'd think on a Disney forum people would be nicer to each other. Nasty is the theme here. Last year we had a Matthew thread that was such a big help, so much positive energy, people really supporting each other. My have things changed. My opinion is better than your opinion ... it's like children fighting. This thread is totally pointless, zero value, because most with the strongest opinions do not seem to be in Florida, are not going to Florida and have no interests in Florida so .......

... to those are are in Florida whether living or visiting, and those like myself who are not in Florida but left a home and family in harms way ... positive thoughts, good luck, take no risks and avoid negativity. :grouphug:

Obviously it is very hard for people to mind their own business, not judge or be insulting and stay focused on helping folks navigate their DISNEY reservations, what to expect in hotels etc. I don't blame you.

Take care of you and the kids, be safe. :chewy:

This was what our Matthew thread was ALL about. Positive advice, what to expect, where there was food, what was happening on the ground. Clearly this thread is a dumpster fire created by folks not there or going there. Maybe start a new thread with a clear title and explanation of what kind of info to post. Drama not needed.

WOW ......... sorry but Irma and Harvey are completely different, FL and Houston are completely different and preparation by States are completely different. They absolutely can not be compared. Over 50" of rain in a place that had no where to drain compared to 10-18" (your numbers) of rain where there are places for it to drain are completely different.

Folks reading, get your info from the professionals on the ground, the Governor, the local authorities ...

ATL too. Just went for big grocery shop because my kitchen has been torn up a month and finally getting cooking hooked up tomorrow. I was shocked at the crowds, the empty water shelves and every register open. We were inquiring what in the world is wrong with people as our water should be fine. They said most were saying they had evacuated up to ATL to stay with people and were stocking up with as much water as they could carry for when they went back. They were also filling their gas tanks and extra gas containers to take back. Our stations have lines and some types of gas are gone.
Thank you! I wondered how someone with 20 years in the business could even think the 2 situations were similar. But anyway, I too wish there was way less judging going on. There's a whole lot of it and a whole lot less helping and I don't get it. Different group of folks this time around I guess.

Traffic here is just disastrous. Mostly because we have this Ironman business. It's already nuts here, without the Irma folks. We probably need to consider grabbing a few things while we go get our tailgate stuff at the grocery tonight. We'll be gone all day tomorrow and will need to make sure and monitor what is happening and potential of what is coming here.

Civil engineer here who works on water and sewer systems... I did a bit of research. WDW utilities are run by the Reedy Creek Improvement District. It looks like WDW has separate storm and sanitary sewers - this is good because if there is flooding, the storm water will be draining in a separate pipe from the toilets. However, I recommend filling up bathtubs still because if utilities lose power or pump stations are flooded (which happened during Superstorm Sandy in NY/NJ), the drinking water may lose pressure or not be able to be treated. Granted, much of the Sandy flooding was due to storm surge, but it still could happen with a sudden intense amount of precipitation. Same with the wastewater treatment plants, even the sanitary sewers can become backed up if the plant is overloaded or the plant loses power. Most plants and pump stations do have backup generators, but not all, or something can go wrong with those as well.

The bathtub water isn't to drink, it's to flush the toilet if you can't manually flush it, or to wash yourselves or wash dishes..
I just want to add that when you use this water to flush the toilet, you pour it into the tank, not the bowl. I grew up in New Hampshire, with blizzards and such, and was in NYC for Sandy and was surprised to learn that some of my NYC co-workers didn't know this.

That's when you cancel an event that is going on. When they cancel an event it's different.

We moved our dates because of Irma and had 3 beverage seminars booked next week. We changed to 9/28, and they refunded our beverage seminars. No questions. I was talking to Guest Services at the time.

Why?

Someone upthread said this won't work at disney with pressure toilets.

I got sick of sitting in my house (with a swing set in the living room and all of the patio furniture in the kitchen) so we came to MK. It's been raining pretty steadily since we arrived, and it is EMPTY!

We left the MK around 2pm. I was surprised how many people were there, though wait times were mostly short. Space Mtn. was 50 minutes though when I checked and 7DMT was 40 minutes. It wasn't raining at all then though. At the airport now to get out of here! I hope you stay safe!!

hey all, haven't been on the dis in a few months, been working 70hrs/wk as of late. I haven't read all of this thread, but just want to wish everyone safe harbor from the storm. Yesterday, when I saw the potential for Irma to be a Cat 3 over Orlando, I immediately called my CM parents and begged them to evacuate. Luckily they weren't scheduled to work again until Monday, but in this situation I think they would have called out regardless. They packed up the cats and everything important, as well as some things that aren't essential to life but have value to us (the Disneyana :) among other things) and left Orlando 7AM this morning. They will arrive at their hotel in Gulfport about 11PM tonight. What would normally have been an 8 1/2 hr drive has doubled. Travel has been of course slow, and they report that finding gas has been stressful.

I am on edge for everyone in FL, the potential for lives to be lost, and for the livelihoods that people have built to be wiped away. I fear for my beloved WDW as well.

oh yeah, huh? I am afraid in a panic, I would forget this! Thank you!
