I'm in my late 30s, and the way this country is falling apart, as evidenced by what is going on in Virginia, is scaring the living hell out of me. My question is to you gen xers and baby boomers, who lived through vietnam and nixon and george wallace and jim crow and detroit and all that: were you scared then? Is what was going on then comparable to what is happening now? Was it not as bad? Was it worse? Trying to gain some perspective. It feels like what is going on now is 1000 times worse than anything that came before it, but since i wasn't around for it i want to get some additional perspectives.

Before this gets closed because it is political. SJW, Antifas & entitled millennials whose idea of free speech is only what they want to hear screaming that people are racist & nazis are not the same as Vietnam protesters, Freedom Marchers & Jim Crow.

Not scared then not scared now just glad I never raised any of these individuals.

Interesting that asking people to compare what happened in our recent history to what is happening now, to try to have a conversation and listen to others' perspectives, is considered "political". I thought it was just an exercise in rational discourse. I suppose we aren't allowed to have those anymore.......and so thank you for answering my question, though perhaps in a way you did not intend.

I am at the tail end of the baby boomers, but I always seemed to be the youngest around, as in on both sides of my family, and most of my friends. My parents lived through the Depression era and WWII, which had a huge influence on them, and in some respects, me. (As they were similarly influenced by their parents, who were either immigrants or second generation immigrants.)

I was born around the time JFK was assasinated - I know that was a crisis for many around me, especially being from the Boston area. Then came RFK and MLK, and locally, some others. When I was growing up we had the Boston Strangler and the desegregation busing riots in Boston. My older brother had a draft number and many of his friends served in Vietnam. I remember the fear and the protests. We also had the Gas crisis in the 70s (which caused our big cars to become smaller), as well as problems with the Middle East, Cuba and Russia, among others. In the 80s we had an assasination attempt on President Reagan, the Challenger disaster and all sorts of other issues and problems. Fast forward we had 9-11 and the wars in the Middle East, Al Queda, ISIS, etc. I am not sure I feel differently about things now than I did then other than that I know more now and can think things through fairly well on my own. Growing up, some of it was confusing to me.

I feel for you that you feel scared. At times I am, too. I do feel like the violence has escalated. Not just violence at protests like these, but every day violence. I said on the other thread I feel like we need someone who can bring everyone together, and we haven't found that person yet. I'm not sure who it will be. Or, I think we might be united another way, such as in the aftermath of an event. I wish people could somehow develop that perspective before we actually have an event. I feel like people just want to be "right" rather than really trying to come together. It does worry me. But overall, I think we will work things out, as we have in the past. Imagine how the colonists felt!

So hang in there. :grouphug:

You haven't been on the DIS long. I am up for dialogue but this is gonna get political & not allowed here. First mention of ........ It will be gone.

So the KKK, white socilalist, alt-right....are not racist?

I'm in my 40's. The only time I truly was worried was 9/11. Granted, I was a flight attendant for a major airline so it impacted my life and career in a huge way. I quickly learned to move past the fear and realized this was the new reality. We all have adjusted.

No, I honestly don't believe we are worse off today. Lots of people believe our world has deteriorated, but my theory is that it's not changed ... we just see everything now due to social media.

I can't say more without getting political.

And the racist have been emboldened.

Personally I believe if the protest/March is peaceful, I don't care what they're marching about, free speech and all that. And counter protests are fine as long as there's no confrontation allowed. Marchers and counter marchers should be kept apart. That's when the violence seems to happen.

MY DS is a 3rd year at UVA. We move him back to Charlottesville next week. So YES! I am scared. The protesters and counter protesters (most of whom are from out of state on both sides) have descended on Charlottesville twice in the last 45 days. This time it got violent. Next week 20,000 students are returning to town and not even their grounds/campus is safe. Torch bearing protesters marched through the middle of the grounds/campus Lawn last night! The university has NOTHING to do with the statue slated for removal in a city park in the town. I don't think the protesters or counter protesters should be allowed anywhere near UVA. The whole thing is a powder keg right now.

See, that's where i'm confused. This discussion does not have to be political. I'm asking how people feel now compared to back in our history during similar periods of upheaval and unrest. I'm trying to see if i am overreacting simply because i wasn't around for those earlier times, because i might not have perspective. I didn't say i only wanted perspectives from those who have a specific type of political belief.

You're afraid that the discussion will get political, but then you throw out the terms SJW and antifas, which will pretty much ensure that it gets political. Self-fulfilling prophecy, and not where i wanted this to go.

At this moment i don't care about R or D or alt-right or antifas or any of that; i just want to hear from people who have been through earlier tumultuous times, and how they feel about today, and how it compares.

p

Who said that? I did not comment on that specific protest. It was a general question on the state of things then & now. But read whatever you want into what is said

Knock off the nonsense and be honest. This thread is clearly about today. You knew that when you commented. Own that and stand by your comments. The fact that you can't and try to play word games instead really says it all.

I'm sorry that you're getting "that type" of response here. I know you were looking for support.

They're screaming that people are racist and nazis because they well, are. They're self-proclaimed white nationalists.
