Memory Maker price increased today. (6/7)

No I see plenty of people getting it. Why raise the price of it doesn't sell? It sells well during runDisney weekends at least many people are purchasing it there.

Maybe It sells great...but a giveaway doesn't imply that.

Run weekends aren't "normal" weekends...by the way.

In the end...they look at hard numbers for 365 days...not small spurts...

What is the food and wine festival 11 months long now?

Never said they were normal weekends. I also don't see any giveaways. Again why raise the prices if it doesn't sell?

They give it away with annual passes (that is unless they canned it?)...that is a massive, significant shift in policy implying low sales.

But the reason they increased the price is pretty simple too...these are digital shots taken by the billions that require little overhead cost...so really it's incredibly high profit. In essence...it almost doesn't matter if you sell it or not.

I don't consider that giving it away. They raised the prices of the APs and justified it by throwing in the photopass. I can see this argument working for DL where there is a ton of APs but not so much for WDW.

They sell a ton of APs in Orlando as well..it's just a bigger market so it's a smaller percentage.

And the bold statement IS a giveaway in Orlando. Rest assured the pricepoint was predetermined and the memory maker didnt affect it one bit.

if history repeats itself, it may go back down in price before the end of the year. Last time I went up to these prices, it suddenly went back down just as fast.. that one sucked as I just missed it, and by the time I visited it was lower again.

This happened to me for my trip. Sometime between Aug and Dec of 2015, it went up $20. I bought it anyway because I wanted it. Then the priced dropped again before my January trip, so they gave me a $20 credit to use on photo gifts. I would have rather had the refund but I guess they didn't have to anything for me at all. I am hoping it drops again before my trip next year!

The ap price did a pretty big jump that year, I would say they are forcing us to buy it. a family of 4 doesn't need 4 memory makers.

I personally bought an AP because it included MM, which made the math work out for me and I was able to retroactively save photos from a past trip. I think it brings value to the AP, so it's hard to say it's just a giveaway. That's be like saying parking must not sell well because the give it away to APs.

The photo pass system at Disney has quite a bit of overhead when you consider all the employees and systems for it. Plus each photographer has ~5k of equipment on them. Then they give them all away for a very reasonable price, relatively. Not to mention the fact they will spend that overhead to take free pictures of you with your camera.

Yeah, there is profit in it, but there is a lot of cost too.

The cost is negligible...believe it or not...that's why every podunk amusement park has had on ride photos back to film...

And many annual pass holders - i'd venture to say most - have had them for along time  and we had to swallow a $150 increase...

I think most of those aren't buying memory maker...for those "once In a lifetime" trips...

...that happen a couple times a year or in the case of Florida...every weekend.

That was the other side of it...

You only would by one per party...not one per person...

So did the price go up because of the pictures? No...it was a 25% hike across the board because no one will stay off the mine train or say no to a $275 room at port orleans...

...to be blunt

We'll just have to disagree... I don't think the passes would have gone up 25% if they didn't add in photos.. I think the perks that came out since kind of show they went to far with the price so while not their intention, it didn't have the "oh I'll pay 25% more for that" appeal they expected.

Are you new to Disney? They wanted a massive increase (similar to Disneyland a couple years before)...thought the market would support it (jury still out)...and did it.

That's how it works when you're responsible for generating 30% of the profits in a gigantic public company...

Nothing ground breaking here.

But...I do agree they did push it a little far...the perks are one thing, the no increase last year is a HUGE one.

Iger has done nothing with as much vigor as increase prices...all of them.

You can't compare photo pass to what every other amusement does when you are talking about cost structure. Ride photos are a very small part of MM, and probably the cheapest. There is really no comparison of photo pass to anything in any other park. The closest thing I've seen is on cruise ships and the cost of images is far higher there.

That was a very loose comparison...

...to go one further...you can't think the increase to tens of thousands of annual passes by that large amount was to "break even"...

As many have identified here...that was a pretty thinly veiled concession to smokescreen a large increase in a non-essential product. They didn't increase the price and say "oh...we better spend on them to give back"...

Nope.

I'm slightly annoyed because I want the memory maker for my trip in November, but my travel agent hasn't added it to my package yet! Now I'll be forced to pay this higher price. If only she had added it sooner! *weeps for my $20*

I am not sure what kind of park ticket you have. But just putting it out there. A 6 day base ticket with memory maker is around 585. AP is 830. If you have park hopper or more days that will close the gap. Do the math, the discounts associated with an AP might make it worthwhile to go that route to get the MM included.

Oh, I was never trying to imply that they had to jack the AP prices to pay for photo pass. I agree, there is huge profit there, but it is no where near 100% profit. However, I still think MM has a lot of value for people that don't go to the parks very often and is still relatively inexpensive compared to similar products elsewhere.

I agree with your last point...but does that really apply to annual passes?

I guess that depends on the definition of "often"...

Exactly. However, the benefits of an AP are given to the individual, not the family. I kinda think they should make a family AP option
