Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part V!

Anyone have any recent experience with a Mickey Head cake? A couple of different descriptions here. One sounds like a choice in cake flavor and possibly 2 layer. The other is standard Choc cake and ganache. 10 person family dinner coming up and I think this may be the best choice for our group.

We just had Mickey Head cake for a meal at the Magic Kingdom. It was actually really good. Only one option - all chocolate. Pretty large and would easily work for 10-12. You can also add a message like Happy B-day or congrats.

I've only seen it offered as a chocolate cake. I did see one version where instead of ganache they piped frosting onto it, but that was one random picture I saw some time ago. I don't think they are in the habit of offering this in other flavors.

May I ask the dumbest question ever asked on a cake thread? Can you get a birthday pie? We will be there for my son's 17th birthday and he hates cake. We have ordered cakes before for other occasions , but with this being his birthday, I was hoping for a cake alternative. TY!

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. Sounds good to me!

...Rec'd an email from Chef Brian and asked him some questions and for suggestions.

Ordered a mini tier cake today for delivery to Pop Century. Marble cake with raspberry filling. Wanted either minnie theme or Tink theme so can't wait to see it.
What number did you call and how far in advance did you order? Does anyone think I'm too late to order a cake for delivery to POP for the end of next week? My DD's birthday is the 12th but we will be at MK all day so I think I would want to get a cake sooner and then that way we will have several days to snack on it (we depart on the 15th). I've been back and forth for the last two weeks as to whether I would order a cake or try to fond some other type of surprise to get delivered. She turns 18 so I feel like I should do something, even though the trip is her gift.

Here is the info from my MK special events coordinator. This was in mid January-

"Our Mickey Mouse head cake, which serves up to 10, is in the shape of Mickey’s Head and is a chocolate cake with a dark chocolate ganache over top. This cake costs $54.00 plus tax and can be decorated with a “Happy Birthday”, “Happy Anniversary” or “Congratulations” chocolate piece!"

I have been back and forth emailing with Donald at the Contemporary. I wanted to get a mini cake for my son and he loves chocolate, chocolate mousse so that's all good. However, I was trying to get a second cake with some sort of fruit mousse (strawberry or raspberry) and vanilla cake is fine or chocolate. He keeps telling me that mini cakes are available as vanilla cake with white chocolate mousse and the chocolate with chocolate mousse (and one or two layer with either Mickey or a castle and a rose). Has this been your experience? I really wanted to try a fruit filling because I'm considering using a large 50th anniversary cake next year for my parents but I know my mom loves fruit fillings over chocolate.

That was all we were offered for minis by the contemporary as well.

Us too. I tried to get a tropical flavor and it was a no go. We were able to get the tropical mousse at yacht club a few years ago but it was a full size cake.

Well that's frustrating. I'm not likely to spend on a large layer cake for a 50th anniversary for my folks if I can't taste the fillings in advance. I wonder how people pick prior to a wedding at Disney? Do they just order without tasting? I was thinking trying it in a mini cake would be a good way to sample and I wasn't trying for an exotic flavor IMO. Hmmm. I might still ge a simple mini cake for the kiddo but not sure about the other. I guess the minis are just not worth it if they don't standardize it.

Large wishes weddings get a menu and cake tasting. Those of us that have an escape wedding go sight unseen. That said I had a marble cake with Bavarian cream filling with fresh raspberries that was awesome for my wedding cake

Thanks for the info. Your cake does sound delicious!

You may be able to try that option with just a 6 inch cake. It's more cake, but not usually much more price wise. I've had a 6 inch for $43 and a mini tiered cake for $35. If you really want to try it that's what I would suggest.

I had the same exact experience today - I guess they are diverting all calls from the number listed on Post 2 to the Boardwalk Cake Hotline, which was 407-939-6355.

Called to see what options I have for a mini cake for my upcoming trip. I left a message and will wait for someone to call back. We are going for Star Wars Dark Side Half Marathon weekend, so I'm hoping to surprise my mom with a Star Wars "inspired" cake (no characters or anything) after we do the 5K that Friday. I'll post about how the conversation goes once they call back!

So, just a follow up. It's been a week and a half since I left a message and did not receive a call back. I finally got around to calling back today, again received the answering machine, and left another message. Maybe I'll get a call back this time, lol.

Hi, love this thread and all the information that comes with it. We're going to be at Disney for my daughter's birthday on June 13. We're staying from June 11th-16th at AKL Kidani Village. We're scheduled to eat at BOG and Crystal Palace on her birthday for lunch and dinner, and we've got reservations for the 14th at Trattoria al Forno for the new character breakfast. My debate is where and when to order her a special small cake. I haven't seen any pictures of the honey crunch cake from Crystal Palace. I don't know if I should order from the resort and have something delivered to our room or try to have something ordered for the breakfast and be able to maybe get a mini cake from the Boardwalk Bakery. My daughter loves all sweets but especially chocolate, and I don't want to order a larger cake cause it's only the four of us going. We're already on the dining plan and will be eating all the desserts that come with it. I've ordered a chocolate birthday slipper from CRT before, but that is the only experience I've had with special desserts. Any advice is appreciated

I always find it easiest to have the cake delivered directly to the room. Then you don't have to schlep it all over after a meal someplace else. The catch is, AKL usually says they can't do mini cakes (though a few DISers have managed to get them). It never hurts to ask, but they may try to talk you into a 6-inch cake, which will make a lot of leftovers. Alternatively, BoardWalk Bakery has no problem doing mini cakes and could deliver one to your Trattoria al Forno breakfast.

Thank you so much for the advice. I think I'll call AK and see if I can get a cake delivered. She'll love anything but want it to be as special as I can make it!
