Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

I'm coming off a bout of achilles tendinitis. I have previously ruptured this achilles, so my doctor takes it seriously. My orthopedic surgeon specializes in sports medicine and worked with me to get me to the marathon. Not running just wasn't an option. He set me up with 2 weeks of no running and intense PT during that time. i am undertrained, but it helped my achilles immensly and i am running again with little pain.
Do you have an increased risk of tear or rupture? The logic of no full, but other distances are ok, just doesn't seem to make much sense. Can you get a 2nd opinion?

I have a felling that my Dopey experience is going to be disastrous next week. My treadmill broke on me this weekend on my first run. I went to the gym to try and run on the treadmills there and I couldn't go more than 3 miles without a fan blowing on me.

Yesterday I decided to go outside and try to get a 10 mile in (it was a beautiful 68 outside). This was the first time I have run outside since ToT which was the first time since March. I ran out of water after mile 3 so I came back home and filled up the water bottle and made myself go 6.25. I was done.

I've been dealing with a nagging upper hamstring pull for over a month so I have been waiting 4 or so days between runs so it doesn't hurt on my run (it hurts after.) It hurts pretty good today so I have decided to just blow off the run I had planned on Saturday and just let it hopefully heal by next Thursday.

Anyway thinks for listening to me rant. Good luck to everyone!

Hang in there. I like your idea of resting--nothing you do now will improve your chances of finishing the runs. But running now MAY hurt your ability to start a run.

Someone said that a few posts back--a DNF is better than a DNS. Stay healthy now.

Do you use a tiger tail or any other roller? I found that those help with some injuries?

Also, have you seen a sports medicine doctor? I saw one with my injury, and between some topical steriod applications, rest and nitroglycerine patches, I was GTG in about 10 days.

Don't lose faith--there are a few days to rest before the 5k. Use them to your advantage.

I think that once you get there, and get into the crowd, you will be good. There is a lot of time to complete each race--use that to your advantage.

See ya down there!

I have found that moments like those you listed lead to the best race ever. I find that if things are going wrong...like sore knees and what nots...that race turns out to be one of the best.

I wouldn't worry about anything that happens this week. As long as you have put in plenty of 4-in-a-row run weeks, you'll be fine.

I have plenty of those. :lmao: I'm just lacking the long runs this time around. Ah well, I have done marathons before, just never on quite so little training.

We've all worked hard - in just over a week, we'll be walking (gingerly) around WDW, proud Dopey finishers!

I'm not injured injured but have some relentless muscle tightness that can make things pretty uncomfortable in the higher miles. I'm am running Goofy and even I have big doubts on how well Sunday will go for me. But I decided to run it anyway and if it doesn't work out, at least it will help prepare me for the next time.

I haven't done any sort of working out for a while now...over two weeks with the exception of 8 miles I did the other day.

I have to be grateful what I have though...but in the meantime I have been super stressed and the thought of doing anything working out wise is a no go...because my mind cannot get rid of the anxiety.

First my father collapsed and couldn't get up and had to call 911...I hung out with him in the emergency room until it was determined he was extremely dehydrated.

Major snow and really low temps caused my place of business to freeze up and nothing works...so I have to have someone check it out and hopefully today...my mind is whirling from all the stuff that is wrong and what it will take to fix it.

Then I remind myself...I am lucky...everyone is healthy and that is most important and everyone is safe...broken pipes and heating systems can be fixed...one day at a time...but geeze my nerves are killing me even now.

Hello Dopey runners!

A long time WISHer popping in (and not reading the thread, so sorry if this has already been mentioned) to say that a small group of WISHers, including myself, will be on hand Sunday to scream-team at Wide World of Sports--somewhere in the 19-20 mile point of the marathon.

We will have oranges and cold washcloths and cow bells and pixie dust to help you finish the race. We'll try to make our WISH presence obvious--signs or shouting or whatever, although we are an "equal opportunity scream team" and will help Anyone who needs it.

So if you see a crazy group of people--one may have a green wig-that would be us. Please stop if you need a pick-me-up, or a hug (we are not averse to sweat!). We have all done this race before (most of us as recently as last year) and know the final stretches can be tough.

Good luck, and may the temperatures moderate!

Maura

PS There will also be another group of WISHers outside of DHS with even more goodies.

Between injuries and life, I think a lot of us are going into this undertrained. Lots of us are really going to be struggling with that. That in itself is a HUGE source of anxiety - I resemble that well. It's ironic that the thing usually giving us relief from anxiety and stress is the thing we haven't been able to do lately.

I'm so glad your dad is okay and your business can be repaired. We'll all be in this thing together, whether fully trained or not. Good luck with your race! I'll be struggling along with you, and it sounds like we're in good, nervous, less-trained-than-we-wanted-to-be company.

Looking forward to seeing everyone along the course. It helped SO much last year seeing everyone outside of DHS. The cold wash cloth was heavenly. I'm wearing my wish shirt for the full. Thanks to all the scream teamers!

Thanks, Maura!! I'll look forward to that! I tend to need a hug, esp if things are going south. And with the possible heat, that's a concern.

P.S. If anyone hears me go by and say "Yay, WISH team!" and you don't recognize me (and I don't have any WISH run gear)...it's me...please don't give me that "whotheheckareyou?" look. :thumbsup2

I'm usually hollering support for the WISH team and getting that look too, since I only have a WISH Bondi Band. :goodvibes

Everything was taken care of today with the business...I just didn't want some unresolved problems traveling to Florida with me!

I agree...as it gets closer we all get nervous...my friend who is doing the Goofy just finished her costumes...so I am looking forward to laughter we will have dressed as Tink/Minnie & Snow White/Minnie/Tink and Patriotic glitter girl!

I will see you there and the other Wishers outside the studios. I remember talking to a group of them last year at that spot.

Anyone heading down this weekend or is everyone going Tuesday or Wednesday? I'm leaving Tuesday night.
