Back on the UW housing topic........

On our last cruise I hauled the housings for the HD camcorder and the digital camera. The housing's themselves are not to bad, but the prep/maint work is a PITA - have to travel with spare o-rings, lube, silica gel etc.

This past cruise, we left them (the housings) at home, and I bought an Olympus Stylus 770 SW onboard the Magic. It's good for depths upto 33ft with no housing - which is plenty good for snorkeling.

These were my first attempts with it (all taken at Castaway Cay):

Wow Andy, that takes great pictures! If I remember correctly, the camera wasn't that expensive (at least not on the digital camera scale!) Do you mind posting the cost again?

G'mornin'....

.... I wakeup ta find your photos and I must say, they look terriffic! I've wondered a bit about what it'd be like to have a true underwater camera (housing or UW body). I don't swim very well - and hence I don't swim very much. Otherwise I think I might have gotten some UW equipment a long time ago. I DO seem to enjoy shooting pictures in abundance though.... why just yesterday I took stock of my permanent storage - and found I had 62,000 images. This is what I took in the last 7 years.

At any rate, your images make me wanna run by the nearest best buy to look at UW cameras. That - or - seein' as its' more conveneient - I think I'll just search the web to see whats' available.

Seriously....

3_med.jpg

This is the sort of thing I had looked at before, the Uwa-Marine U-APX 100 ($285 at B&H Photo) - in part because I have lost a body to water damage once. And when I get around to picking up the next camera body (the 40D) then I'll probably want one of these eventually... but not until after I pick up these zoom lenses....

CL70_200H.jpg

It's a professional grade 70-200 f/2.8 "L" Image Stabilized lens (above)
and the 24-70 f2.8 "L" (below)

canon_ef_24-70mm-kit.jpg

They're fast (shoots better in low light conditions), built like a tank and versetile lenses with some of the best optical performance that Canon can deliver... IE, beautiful color with "3D" sharp and contrasty results from edge to edge across the widest focal and aperature range. Lesser lenses are soft at the edges (or gasp, across the center!) at wide open aperatures and / or at the extremes of wide or tele positions. And the worst lenses cannot deliver well resolved focusing. Or rather the focusing system design cannot achieve tack sharp focal accuracy with the given lens. So - these "L" lenses represent some of the best that the manufacturer makes.

SO, my only issues are #1) the extreme weight of the things, #2) the need for a monopod most of the time due to the weight (for extended use) with the long lens, and #3) The cost. As it costs 250% of what the next camera body is gonna run me to acquire these two lenses. And THAT gives me pause to reflect. I'd be remorseful if I ever DROPPED or LOST the new body with either of these lenses.... or God forbid I lost my bag.

The lenses I have now are moderately priced "pro-sumer" grade lenses. Sharp and effective performers in a lighter made body - but I think I am approaching the point where I want a little more out of my equipment.

I kno... the simple answer is .... "just get it and don't drop or lose it".... and if I do... "just buy another set".....

<wink>

Great pictures Andy! Your pictures make me want to do the snorkel trip at Castaway Cay next year! And look at that camera. I have two Pentax underwater cameras that I got the first one on the ship. No housing required and they take incredible pictures too, but not as deep as the Olympus.

I don't know how many images I have, but they are taking up 133GB sez Windoz.

Happy Birthday Lauren!

(Sorry if this is a double post, but I think the first time I tried it I lost it!)

I want to do the Eurostar when it starts from its new station St Pancras in a few weeks time.]

Think we might wait a while to allow it to bed in. It was dead easy for us when it left Waterloo, but St Pancras is a bit more of a pain as it doesn't involve a train direct from Reading!

I don't know that "blast" is the term I'd use! :headache: I can't remember the last time I had to compute an integral to find the area under a curve. Oh snap! Yes I can, in college! Nowadays, I've got coworkers who are MATLAB jocks to do that for me :teeth:

Ok, that's funny. In my 'swan song' editorial as editor of the student newspaper in college, I wrote about all things I had learned in college, including that the integral of 1/x dx = ln(x)+C. I then wrote that I had learned no one was ever going to come up to me and ask me the integral of 1/x dx.

25 years later, no one has.

I have no idea why I took five terms of calculus (well, really eight, since I took three courses twice).

::shudder:: I hear ya brother...I don't think I've ever had anyone ask me about multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) but I had 2 courses in it :p

Happy Birthday to You -
Here's a cake for you!

Well fellow pirate:s we're getting a move on today. It's going to be a lazy day considering this is what we woke up to this morning

This isn't the first snowfall of the season, we had some snow last week but it vanished in about 30 minutes. These photos were taken at about 0900 this morning and the roads still have accumulation. There's about 5"-8" in the backyard.

Sorry the photos are so big! They looked fine on the 'puter and Photobucket, I thought they would have been scaled to fit the DIS page. Guess I have some more learning to do.

Oh no, it has started....................:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

Here it's about 75* and sunny, we have our windows open to let the cool breeze blow through the house.

Hi gang!! A quick Sunday check-in. For some reason, my internet connection has been sketchy today...off/on/off/on.....but at least I got caught up!!
